HumanDrivenDev··on Employers will do almost anything to find workers except pay them more
Sometimes backs will join in the scrum in order to push their forwards over the line to score a try. It's rare but it does happen and is legal under IRB rules.
HumanDrivenDev··on Employers will do almost anything to find workers except pay them more
Just get a VPN like the Chinese posters use.
HumanDrivenDev··on The Middle Child Is Going Extinct
My altruism was eroded by life experience. I can't quite bring myself to actively screw others over, but I'm definitely not the 'good person' I once was.

Maybe true altruists are more resilient - but they're also much more susceptible to abuse.

HumanDrivenDev··on 2018 MacBook Pro Review
For a professional, that's a few days of work.

Nice stealth brag (:

I'm an intermediate dev in a first world country with a salary that locals would call good. That's over a months work for me.

HumanDrivenDev··on What I Learned Working for Steve Ballmer
Right, it's probably not a good idea from a pure performance perspective. But people aren't always rational.
HumanDrivenDev··on The Middle Child Is Going Extinct
I never advised anyone to do anything. I just described some things I've noticed.
HumanDrivenDev··on What I Learned Working for Steve Ballmer
Apologizing and taking responsibility is a sign of good character, not a sign of weakness.

A lot of people disagree with you, and see it as a sign of weakness. Often those people have a lot of influence over your career.

HumanDrivenDev··on The Middle Child Is Going Extinct
So much this. Altruistic, considerate people who hem and haw over how their decisions effect others grossly over estimate other human beings. Take a walk along the side of a high speed road and look at all the garbage thrown there. People don't give a shit.
HumanDrivenDev··on The Peril of the Laptop Sticker
What are you doing to your laptops!? Have you considered something rugged or at least semi-rugged?
HumanDrivenDev··on How to take 7 years to ship a beta
That's the meta game, where the author of the game enjoys building the game as its own game. Not productive if you're trying to ship a game, but definitely sounds fun.

It's hard to stay focused on building a shippable product when you have no stakeholders. It's something I struggle with myself when I have 'build yourself a side-gig' time. At the end of the day, no one really cares if you fail.

HumanDrivenDev··on “I'm basically giving myself a permanent vacation from being BDFL”
I think it's deeper than just 'programmers today'. It's an important life lesson for people pre-disposed towards niceness to learn. Most people aren't thoughtful or considerate or fair. They just want to maximise benefit for themselves and their family. You're pushing a free product - so to them it's 'worthless' and they can treat you like trash.

Figure it out sooner rather than later or you'll be walked over for the rest of your life.

HumanDrivenDev··on Have the Tech Giants Grown Too Powerful?
I'll charitably assume I'm being down-voted more because of how short and dismissive my remark was than anything else. Truth be told that's all I think the likes of the NYT deserves. Even the POTUS calls it "Failing New York Times".
HumanDrivenDev··on Have the Tech Giants Grown Too Powerful?
Looks like old media is feeling threatened.
HumanDrivenDev··on Goodbye Microservices: From 100s of problem children to 1 superstar
Our industry is too immature to have veneration for things that are old, I think.
HumanDrivenDev··on Rehabilitating the Arrogant Engineer (2012)
Yes it was more a joke about the terrible quality of code produced by physics. Obviously they write stuff that works for some bizarre value of 'works'. Of course this being HN everyone took it super seriously ;)
HumanDrivenDev··on Goodbye Microservices: From 100s of problem children to 1 superstar
This is a classic case of not understanding micro services and trying to fit a problem around a tool.

This sentence needs to be repeated for everything on the 'wrong end' of the hype curve.

This is a classic case of not understanding NoSQL and trying to fit a problem around a tool.

This is a classic case of not understanding OOP and trying to fit a problem around a tool.

This is a classic case of not understanding dynamic typing and trying to fit a problem around a tool.

HumanDrivenDev··on Rehabilitating the Arrogant Engineer (2012)
What annoys me most about that show is that 3 physicists and a mechanical engineer are often shown writing working software. That's rarely the case.
HumanDrivenDev··on UK unveils extensive new plan to go all-electric by 2040
Give it a rest.
HumanDrivenDev··on Undershoot: Parsing theory in 1965
And Forth easier still.
HumanDrivenDev··on Roadmap to becoming a React developer in 2018
mithril should be the default choice for everyone. no compiler, no file format, no commandline tools, comes with its own router and request functions, and is 8kb.
HumanDrivenDev··on Vue.js: the good, the meh, and the ugly
I started out with vue, but found it too heavyweight and clunky. A viewmodel framework shouldn't need its own god damn compiler or file format. I ended up switching to mithril.js, which is much smaller than vue and comes with its own router. Haven't missed vue at all.
HumanDrivenDev··on EU copyright law proposal rejected
The EU are masters at this. See: the Lisbon treaty.
HumanDrivenDev··on Spanish Wikipedia also shuts down in protest at proposed EU copyright law
Asos, Zalando, Flixbus, Klarna, Xing, Spotify, Auto1, Takeaway.com

I'm not from Europe or America and the only one I've heard of is 'spotify'.

Are you really denying that the EU is well behind the US in terms of software though? I mean that's immediately obvious to any casual observer. Not sure why people are so defensive about it.

HumanDrivenDev··on Why standard Indonesian is not spoken throughout Indonesia
I've never liked that witticism. For one thing it breaks down really quickly - ie by that logic Welsh is a dialect of English, and Walloon French is a dialect of Flemish. It's also fairly irrelevant to me what a government thinks is a dialect when I want to discuss languages. IE ethnic chinese can call languages that are mutually unintelligable 'dialects' all they want, it doesn't change reality.
HumanDrivenDev··on Plans for OCaml 4.08
Modern OCaml multithreading is still a couple years away

It's been a couple of years away for the last 10 years.

HumanDrivenDev··on Plans for OCaml 4.08
As a language, it's great. As a real world environment/eco-system to get stuff soon? I've been waiting for it to get there for years, and it still hasn't. I check in every 12 months or so, am reminded how nice the language is, and quickly abandon ship when I realise how annoying it is to actually develop software.
HumanDrivenDev··on The Dangers of Train Yards, Through the Eyes of Railroad Employees
As does the frequent mistake of putting weight on the rear pedal.

I don't follow. What do you mean here?

HumanDrivenDev··on The impact of the ‘open’ workspace on human collaboration
No need to start punching. Just confront them on their behaviour. 90% of the time they'll back down if you call them out. They're just school-bullies grown up.
HumanDrivenDev··on The impact of the ‘open’ workspace on human collaboration
I wrote that managers are mostly useless

The ones that aren't are worth their weight in gold, though.

HumanDrivenDev··on The impact of the ‘open’ workspace on human collaboration
I'm in a dead end job right now but I'm reluctant to leave because my office is huge. big bookshelf, multiple chairs, nice view. I'm going to need a big pay increase to go back to an open office, and no one is ponying up.
