Hoasi··on Denmark not offering second Covid booster shot to healthy adults under 50
Sanity will prevail in Denmark, at least.
Hoasi··on Queen under medical supervision at Balmoral
> aristocracy is hierarchical

Hierarchy is the entire raison d'être of aristocracy.

Hoasi··on The slow death of the traditional business card
Implanting a chip in one's hand is overkill. An NFC is just basically a relay antenna... you could wear it or have it attached to your watch or ring. When you change your address or business title, it's easy to update all the information. If you hold a chip inside your hand, you'll have to get it replaced if your info changes. Not the best tech choice.
Hoasi··on Ask HN: Where do you find the interesting jobs?
> Always ask to see code and talk to engineers about what their days look like. I believe there are very few legitimate reasons they won't show you their code, but more likely if they're refusing, it's because they're hiding something. When talking to an engineer, ask them how their code goes from idea to production and have it explained in detail.

In an ideal world it makes sense to have a look at the code and understand how the company works from a holistic standpoint. However in reality I doubt that many companies would allow that to happen at interview stage…

Hoasi··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
> Stop comparing crypto to cash, the competitor is centralised electronic bank accounts and credit cards.

Meanwhile, centralized electronic bank accounts and credit cards steadily work to undermine cash itself.

Hoasi··on No-one knows what they are doing
That's when "you don't know what you are doing" that you can do your best work. If you know what you are doing all of the time, it means you are not learning new things.
Hoasi··on Parents’ trauma leaves biological traces in children
Many people who sure as hell never experienced actual trauma are touting trauma everywhere.

But then again, mental damage is intangible, right?

Since you can't experience other people's distress, your worst experience is always at the top of the scale on an individual level. You can use empathy and reason to understand other people's struggles, but your personal experience is unique in scale.

Hoasi··on Parents’ trauma leaves biological traces in children
> Don't you think that it makes sense in that context?

It does, in an age of entitlement where we teach kids any of their feelings are valid reasons to bully other people to get what they want.

Hoasi··on DALL·E 2 and The Origin of Vibe Shifts
> Just like several years ago you'd say "there's a big difference between these trippy deep-dream images and an actual meaningful illustration with a style and a coherent theme". But here we are.

Exactly, at the very least, that will massively disrupt the fields of illustration and concept art.

Hoasi··on Reddit blocks posting any .ru links
Information wants to be free.

If free speech is paramount to democracy, we shouldn't discriminate. Most people understand there is an information war at play. Most people know that information is either propaganda or carries an agenda. If you cut one opponent's voice, then it's not balanced. Why shouldn't we defend the right for Russian media to promote their narrative? Besides, legitimate, unrelated stories from one perspective also end up ignored.

Censoring Russian media only further isolates Russia, which is counterproductive. That also further separates the world from Russia and understanding regular Russian people.

Last, there is the argument that understanding the Russian state is also critical at times like these. You can also read intent between the lines. Understanding the current opinion of those in power in that part of the world is of the essence.

Hoasi··on U.S. Secret Service Launches Cryptocurrency Awareness Hub
> Have you considered it's just really early days?

How many years do early days last?

Hoasi··on The brain’s reading of the body’s state is key to mental health
> If this is true (and it seems to be), the metaverse and VR aren't likely to help mental health.

And we haven't yet fully assessed the damage of "social" Web 2.0...

Hoasi··on Telegram Became the Anti-Facebook
Cute stickers are not just a crucial part of the conversation. Cute stickers are the conversation.
Hoasi··on A virus helped a woman survive a dangerous antibiotic-resistant infection
> On a side note, d'Hérelle was a fantastic adventurer and his life is fascinating (the French version of [1] has a nice summary), even moreso than Yersin's (the discoverer of the bacteria responsible for the Plague[2], and founder of the city of Đà Lạt[3] in Vietnam)

Did you mean Alexandre Yersin or was Félix d'Hérelle also in Việt Nam at the time?

Hoasi··on The tragic rape of Charles Bukowski’s ghost by Black Sparrow Press (2013)
Martin supported Bukowski early in his career (as a late-blossoming writer). There are many friendly mentions of him and Black Sparrow Press from Bukowski himself. They had a contract. Martin would publish anything Bukowski wrote, as long as he put himself to work. In hindsight, that offer does appear much less generous.
Hoasi··on The tragic rape of Charles Bukowski’s ghost by Black Sparrow Press (2013)
These "corrections" are indeed a serious crime. And such a letdown from an old Bukowski friend.
Hoasi··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
Always be ready to leave the table first.

It doesn’t mean that you will; it doesn’t mean that you should. It means you are prepared. And this can be a huge advantage.

Hoasi··on My MetaMask Private Keys Stolen from GitHub Private Repo in 1 Hour
> What he is doing should have been secure.

Sure, but using any third party is inviting a layer of risk. Banks get hacked too. No system is without vulnerabilities. You decide which to trust, including your potentially error-prone self.

Hoasi··on Real Problems That Web3 Solves, Part 1
I have about $100 in BAT from the initial Brave giveaway, even though I almost never use Brave aside from testing.
Hoasi··on Robert W Malone account suspended on Twitter
> (...) an interesting idea that I think solves some of the problem with trolls. The idea is that you can register for different communities but have to pay in order to comment.

That is, assuming said trolls have neither the financial means, will, nor funding. Given governments' involvement with troll farms, that settles the latter already. If there is influence to gain or direct on these new platforms, there will be funding available from various interest groups pouring into individuals or bots. Confusing is enough to steer opinion a certain way. You don't even need to convince people. Planting the seeds of division does the job.

Hoasi··on My productivity app for the past 12 years has been a single .txt file (2020)
Text works well for managing one's schedule.

Hoasi··on Ask HN: 27, accidentally became wealthy, lost drive. What should I do?
> We are bred to believe if we just solve the money issue, everything else will fall in line. And becoming rich is a great way to realize how much of a myth that is.

Exactly. Not to mention the additional rich people's problems that poor or even merely well-off people don't have and could hardly imagine.

Hoasi··on MIT scientists developed lab-grown wood cells to form a 3D printable biomaterial
Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed lab-grown wood cells that could form the basis of a new, more sustainable 3D printable biomaterial.
Hoasi··on Apple CEO Tim Cook 'secretly' signed $275B deal with China in 2016
> You can't build a superpower on silly, 4-year-old level lies like that one.

You absolutely can and must. That is, in fact, one of the prerogatives of a superpower.

Hoasi··on Square is now called Block

Hoasi··on Remote-first work is taking over the rich world – research hints at why
> Guess what happens in this situation – Bob spends 40 minutes talking out of the hour's meeting about how his way is right, interrupts everyone, and by the end of the hour meeting the boss is saying “Well, why don't we do a proof of concept with Bob's suggestion” simply because everyone is bored and hungry. Meanwhile, Jane had a novel and imaginative idea that went completely ignored because Bob kept cutting her off saying why it wouldn't work early on when she was trying to explain the concept.

True story. I've seen it happen over and over again, and it's one of the many reasons why I would be very reluctant to become an employee ever again.

Hoasi··on The Czech Play That Gave Us the Word ‘Robot’
Karel Čapek is a great science fiction and satirical writer. I'd recommend War with the Newts, also translated as Salamander Wars.
