Time enough, at last!!! (not my real name)

Many-many-many times, I want to respond to a comment - I write up an answer.. most times it ends up being a LONG response (i.e. 500-1000 words). I leave the tab open. I re-read it and edit it, I do this a couple of times. When I have written up a 'good enough response', I close the tab and never post the response. I do this so I don't waste people's time with long responses, while giving me the time to think, rethink, read more about the topic, learn from the other responses, and the extra reading I've done. I blame Lex Fridman (and his darn questions) for this!! :)

(but sometimes.. sometimes.. I do hit the 'reply' button)

Hmm.. I see.. 24/2/2017, and today it's 23/2/2025.. 8 years..

(fun fact - the very day I added a (not-my-main) gmail in the email form, someone tried to 'get in', used recovery, etc. So.. "admins see your email below".. is a joke, and a bad one)

It's not "the third party auditors", it is the scope of the audits that I don't trust. They pick the control "how long do you bake the chicken in the oven", and the report title cab be "enforcing harse conditions and conditions of stress in operations". And later some PR asshole will say "see the audit report summary? no failures to ourfite-proof processes!!!"
HenryBemis··on Ask HN: Anyone got advice for someone like me nearing 40s?
Yes! No! (as some others commented - not too hard).

You can build an amazing body (not hitting on you dude!) with Yoga. Which starts easy, then can turn hard, and 4-5 years later you got a body of iron, flexibility to reach the highest shelves, and stamina to run for hours.

Anyway, depending what you like/enjoy doing, build some muscle, build some stamina, drink less (alcohol). Be healthy(-ier)

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: Anyone got advice for someone like me nearing 40s?
The book "Halftime" by Bob Buford helped me 'orgnanize' my thoughts/wishes/dreams/aspirations for the second half. I had a fair idea of what/why/where/when/how I wanted things to be in the 'second half', and it helped me ask the right questions in a useful order.

I believe Peterson's "Future Authoring" does something similar, but I haven't tried it yet (perhaps this summer I can make the time to try it out).

If you are journaling, go back and skim through your journals (older first --> recent last) and see the changes (and trajectory/future/outlook).

(Depending on the language you read it) Hector Malot writes on En Famille: don't read newspapers, they are a waste of time. I try to stay away from the news, and listen to (few) podcasts much-much later to see if what they were saying "1 day after the XYZ event" actually played out or not". That gives a better measure/perspective of how much trust to put in those people/discussions.

HenryBemis··on Finding a 27-year-old easter egg in the Power Mac G3 ROM
Today some auditor (like me) would fail your ITGCs because of the undocumented partition/file/change/etc (take your pick) and force you to submit a deviation to the SOC team, ask you to "review and update the Secure Design Document to reflect to the change", ask you to create a Jira and/or ServiceNow ticket, etc. etc. etc.

Oh, and you would get a red mark on your "HR P&D record" for the 'Secure Software Policy' violation.

(Shit.. I hated myself writing the above, but it's true)

In 2001 though, we would all laugh if we would have 'caught' the devs doing something cool like this!

HenryBemis··on Judge denies creating “mass surveillance program” harming all ChatGPT users
I remember back in the day when I made the mistake to use Facebook and iPhones that a) Facebook never actually deleted anything and b) iMessage was also not deleting (but both were merely hiding).

This is why in this part of the world we have GDPR and it would be amazing to see OpenAI receiving penalties for billions of euros, while at the same time a) the EU will receive more money to spend, and b) the US apparatus will grow stronger because it will know everything about everyone (the very few things they didn't already know via the FAANGS.

Lately I have been thinking that "they" play chess with our lives, and we sleepwalking to either a Brave New World (for the elites) and/or a 1984/animal farm for the rest. To give a more pleasant analogy, the humans in WALL-E or a darker analogy, the humans in the Matrix.

HenryBemis··on The X Window System didn't immediately have X terminals
In those good old days my Uni was giving away those bulky Unix "manuals" (after every major upgrade they were refreshing the documentation/dossiers) and they would leave on a table a few dozens of the 'outdated' ones. Everyone would grab one and it was a first-come-first-served, and you could end up in a 'useless' dossier, but still they were amazing reads.
HenryBemis··on The X Window System didn't immediately have X terminals
The title made me think: the Tesla 'copilot' didn't immediately have a "copilot".
HenryBemis··on Plastic bag bans and fees reduce harmful bag litter on shorelines
Well we did this for the bags (put a high price on them) and banned some others (e.g. straws). My fear is that taxing plastic items more (let's say of VAT is 20%, plastics could get 35%). Then our dear politicians on Year4 will pass a law to "redirect the extra collection for blah blah blah" and it will end up _not_ to the effort of mitigating the plastic pollution, and we will be stuck with one more tax _and_ the pollution!!
HenryBemis··on Show HN: Should I Pay Off Loan
I too am a Ramsey 'fan' and I appreciate his methods. And seen the title I wanted to write the very same, Yes!!!

I've also worked in many banks in my life and feel that giving 1% and taking 25% interest is insane. Pay every loan/credit card, then keep saving and investing, and you will never need another loan in your life.

A friend has been doing exactly that and bought a house (40yo dude, married, 2 kids) and paid cash for the house and the refurb. He never had a loan/credit card in his life.

HenryBemis··on Microsoft suspended the email account of an ICC prosecutor at The Hague
US has never been "good". Listening to Sachs and Measrheimer they keep saying (in these or other words) that "you know a US president is lying because their mouth is moving". Microsoft is just one more cog in the power-hungry apparatus of the US.

And of course they cannot be trusted. (Same applies for Google, Apple and any other entity in the US that can be served with a gag order and a subpoena.

The masks sometimes drop and we see the true face of who is what. And when Microsoft pulls a fast one like that it shows us the real face/where the loyalty is (and it is never to the client).

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: Is cloud infra making us forget the local file system and memory?
It is there, it is online, it can scale 'in seconds', it can be reached by many (if necessary) and it is easy to update (with great care and testing so it doesn't break 50% of the customers business/game/etc).

So, why not use it? If one has the appropriate ITGCs and a decent risk assessment, then go for it!

HenryBemis··on Show HN: TrendFi – I built AI trading signals that self-optimize
Yes, _but_ (and that is a huge but), I remember some summers ago Erdogan was giving a speech in a village and instead of saying "we have faith in the markets" he said "we have faith in Allah" (not judging, just observing)(it was a time that Turkish Lira was doing very bad, inflation was ruining the country, Erdogan hired his son-in-law to be central banker (or something like that) and that very day Euro took a big dive because of the exposure of Turkish debt, etc etc. Trump (again, not judging, just observing) said "tariffs all around" and markets and currencies crashed a couple of months ago, then recovered, then dropped again, etc.

So, "big bets", especially wig margin, require small movements (or small bets with big movements). And getting in debt is never a good idea, because a tweet by Jerom, Kristine, Vladimir, Xi, Putin, Macron, can send you packing and with an extra $200k debt at 20% interest rate, from which th average person will never recover.

HenryBemis··on BMW ConnectedDrive lets me control my returned rental car (Sixt)
I used to have a BMW that was doing that. My 'capacity/tolerance' to driving is max 10-12 hours. All I need is meat, caffeine, and SecurityNow and/or Metallica. I get it that BWM is trying to do the 'right' thing, but they should allow people to turn the darn thing off.

HenryBemis··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
You are preaching to the choir here :) My point is not for "us, the techies" and privacy-oriented people. My point is clearly for the 50%-60% that think that "we are trying to take their precious WhatsApp from them" and they don't understand that their car insurance is gradually 20% more expensive than others because they keep posting photos from bars on FB.

I keep 'lean' devices, the apps that I actually use, battery lasts from days to weeks (phone, tablet respectively) and NoRoot Firewall (on Android) makes sure that my phone stays 'silent' to the apps and target IP-addresses of my choosing.

HenryBemis··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
The fun fact is that those people have 100+ apps on their phones, which run in the background, draining their batteries, tracking the sh*t out of them, never actually use them (get value out of them) and they think zero about their privacy (probably use gmail or the sorts). Someone asked me to install Viber and it had 30 pages of advertisers/data brokers. I won't share a bowl of poop with them (WhatsApp, Viber, etc.) "Meet them where they are" doesn't work if they are in a pool of privacy-poop.
HenryBemis··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
The below comment does not contribute to the discussion, it can be perceived as a negative one, and I should probably not make it. But these are my true feelings towards everyone who uses anything-Facebook/Meta:

Seriously, who expected anything different? Like.. in which universe does anything think "Facebook/Meta is going to do the right thing"(?)

HenryBemis··on DARPA program sets distance record for power beaming
I was thinking of"how much is enough" so they can power 'instruments'. I am also thinking of 'how can we use this tech to revive space-instruments (the next generation of 'Voyagers' may be equipped with such receivers?)

I also wonder how difficult/impossible would it be, and the 'throughput'. Assuming that you want to recharge a recon drone (or the 'next generation of Voyagers flying in space) that flies over XYZ area/country/etc. Would it take 1sec or 10seconds 'of beam', and the accuracy/waste/total amount one would have to 'dispense' in order to give that drone the X seconds of 'juice' to keep it running for 1000x X seconds of flight duration. And what about clouds/mist/rain/snow/birds/etc.

'Infinite energy' for a drone (I mean no dependency to come down to refuel) is a game changer.

Would that work with 'instruments buried underground? And at what depth? ('War of the worlds' scenario). Could someone bury a device, with only the receiver protruding from the ground, with a battery to keep it alive, and waiting to be activated by a satellite passing by giving it the "10 seconds beam" to fully charge it and.. (I am thinking of the recent drone-related incidents/attacks within Russia and Iran)(if you park a drone for 10 months, its battery will deplete, right?)(I don't have a drone, but batteries are batteries).

A second thought on the matter, can one 'program' the light to be also transferring data? Park the drones in <insert foreign territory>. No programming. In the middle of nowhere (no 4G-5G). You fly a satellite over it, beam down the 'juice' (together with the instructions - no interception of the transfer is possible). Someone finds it 'before', they only get the hardware but no info/intel.

"The possibilities are endless" (and so are the nightmares)

HenryBemis··on Show HN: I built a tool that tells you what to do to grow on Reddit and LinkedIn

Like the other commenter commented, got any success stories to share?

And/or which were _your_ other projects that _you_ promoted with _your_ tool (do share the 'project as a template' then?) that made you the $5k sales (per what? day? month? year?)

HenryBemis··on Sam Altman's Lies About ChatGPT Are Growing Bolder
Whataboutism is a great hobby, right?

To the point of Altman, I keep writing in HN that 'where money can be made, money will be made'. Of course he will lie. And of course he will tell the truth. He will pick the right thing to say at the right (convenient) moment. His job is not to tell the truth. His job is to say and do whatever he can (enough to stay out of jail) to make the most money for himself and his partners/shareholders/etc. (but mostly for himself).

I came across to Sex Pistols lyrics before I listened to their music. The lines that have impressed (and etched in my memory) the most are:

How many ways to get what you want
I use the best, I use the rest
  I use the N.M.E.
  I use anarchy
So.. yeah..
HenryBemis··on Ask HN: Options for One-Handed Typing

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: In 15 years, what will a gas station visit look like?
I remember reading this piece of news some time ago[0]: “People may not know – BP sells coffee. We sold 150 million cups of coffee last year,” Bernard Looney said in an interview in August (2020), referring to beverage kiosks attached to the company’s fuel stations. “This is a very strong business. It’s a growth business.”

I remember I was impressed by this. The only country I drink gas-station-coffee is Finland (because where else can you find coffee in the middle of nowhere?). So right after I read that article, and the first time I saw a BP gas station I got a coffee. It was 'cheap' and I assume EUR per mg of caffeine was 'ok', but the quality/flavor.. omfg. Also, volcanic hot, so thanks but no thanks.

With the hot-dogs, fries, pizzas, snacks, milk, cereal, alcohol (in some countries), they remind me of "The Profit" with Marcus Lemonis, where he is trying to use each square-inch from a retail store to sell stuff.

HenryBemis··on Dolly Parton's Dollywood Express
I discovered her music 'recently'. The 'imagination library' is a thing she has been doing for years, and I read about this on CNN or BBC or something like that, and I was deeply moved. When I read more about it (if I remember well) she started this initiative because her father couldn't read, and she wanted to make sure every kid has books to read. When I read that last part I thought to myself "shit.. this is a KIND person" (like wow!! she is a great human being!).

Perhaps Zuck wants to look like a good tech-bro by smiling at Joe Rogan and advertise "I am one of you guys, I too do BJJ", but in his soul he is a filthy snake who lies all the time ("FBI forced me and I railroaded you but 3 years later I come clean")..

He is not "batshit crazy", or maybe he is. But he is making the next generation of ICBMs for the US government, sorry.. he is making super-duper rockets that will definitely take people to Mars and his companies/creations will be the very first tech ever to _not_ be used for war and death!!!
