Time enough, at last!!! (not my real name)

Many-many-many times, I want to respond to a comment - I write up an answer.. most times it ends up being a LONG response (i.e. 500-1000 words). I leave the tab open. I re-read it and edit it, I do this a couple of times. When I have written up a 'good enough response', I close the tab and never post the response. I do this so I don't waste people's time with long responses, while giving me the time to think, rethink, read more about the topic, learn from the other responses, and the extra reading I've done. I blame Lex Fridman (and his darn questions) for this!! :)

(but sometimes.. sometimes.. I do hit the 'reply' button)

Hmm.. I see.. 24/2/2017, and today it's 23/2/2025.. 8 years..

(fun fact - the very day I added a (not-my-main) gmail in the email form, someone tried to 'get in', used recovery, etc. So.. "admins see your email below".. is a joke, and a bad one)

Ship, ship, ship, and when we get discovered we/you/they write a nice corp spin email "we deeply care for our customers, acted responsibly to inform our clients promptly and worked fast to mitigate all relevant risks" (I've read enough of this BS comms so I don't need LLMs to make one for me). Right?

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: What's the verdict on GPT wrapper companies these days?
I am thinking that some years ago everyone with a Windows PC had to buy an antivirus SW and then MS added Defender.

And then (in reverse) Windows had Solitaire and Pinball and now they don't.

Right now ChatGPT does 'ten things'. I believe it will be like Amazon. Allow you to build your shop-in-a-shop, and then once they see that they can jump this number from 'ten' to 'twenty', they will start offering the extra services/products within the same price, and cut the wrappers 'organically'. Unless those wrappers innovate and improve forever. Or until ChatGPT will M&A those small wrappers.

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: What's the verdict on GPT wrapper companies these days?
Someone else above/below commented "Marketing --> Product".

I see it that I have a problem, someone solves that problem. I pay $$ per month. Everyone is happy.

I'd say "solution" or "product" and not get stuck on the technical details (for/to which I agree with you but 90% of the people don't care).

When you buy milk you don't buy liquid+container+shipping, you buy food. You consume the food. Belly feels nice. See you tomorrow for another bottle.

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: What's the verdict on GPT wrapper companies these days?
> regular users, who pay loss-leader subscriptions

who on earth told you about me???? :)

I asked ChatGPT something, and it told me it needs 7 days to create that thing. I asked it to make small incremental dumps every 6 hours, just so I don't get a bunch of BS/hallucinations on Day7. I usually got 4-5 chats running in parallel, so I am definitely over-use.

On the other hand, there are weeks that I don't even log in at all, so..

HenryBemis··on Are there any noteworthy LinkedIn alternatives?
It began its first steps down that slippery slope (imho) 10-12 years ago. I only log in when I want to find 'the next job'. You can safely ignore anything that says "add your CV". I usually target mega-big corps, and in that case LI always pushes you to their corporate-30min-per-application systems (keep your CV in Word for easier copy & paste). So in a way it has helped me to limit my efforts to 5-10 CVs, and a couple of them always 'lead somewhere'.

and then some flag is switched and I start getting 'a number of messages' from headhunters that (want to) waste my time. An easy way to be blacklisted by those spammers is to _always_ tell them "I ain't telling you my current $$$ or my $$$ expectations, the effing gig/role/contract has a budget+benefits, tell me what are those and I will respond". That will send those assholes away faster than garlic does a vampire. If they stay, then they mean business and they 'like' the CV enough to talk/negotiate with you.

There are some other 'smaller' ones (Indeed comes to mind) that still stick to 'find a job and nothing else'.

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: How do you sell to B2B in current state of AI?
Sidenote: when I look for a solution to a problem I don't care whether ones uses AI, or a hammer, or a screwdriver. I just want the bloody job done.

(Additionally) Depending where you are in the world, and where your customer is, AI can simply make things worse (GDPR: profiling, decision making, 'explainability, etc)

HenryBemis··on What a Hacker Stole from Me
Yes!

I was "stuck" (someone dropped me off and someone else was supposed to pick me up, but they were late so..) on a highway/motorway in <country> (edit: I wrote it and then deleted it for privacy) some weeks back. The weather was great! Sun was shining, a cool 24 degrees, I was wearing my hoodie, it was windy. I got bored on waiting by the highway/motorway.

No village/coffee place anywhere near, so I decided to take a vertical small road and walk by a green field. And it was windy. And I could see the bushes and leaves from the trees swinging back and forth. And it was windy and very calming (to my soul) so I stood there gazing at the wonderful nature. And I was thinking, why the fuck do we live in cement boxes in cities? I could buy "a few sqm, build something with glass/brick/steel, no deep foundations, and smaller 25sqm "hut" as my office right next to the "house" and live next to a field and have a great life...

Anyway, my friend arrived, picked me up and we continued driving.

I was thinking that the cost of remote land/house/'office' would be 50% on the cost of a 100sqm flat in (most), with the pro of the calmness and the con of being alone in the middle of nowhere.

But there is always the option...

HenryBemis··on LLMs should not replace therapists
It is similar to "we got all these super useful and productive methods to workout (weight lifting, cardio, yoga, gymnastics, martial arts, etc.) yet people drink, smoke, consume sugar, sit all day, etc.

We cannot blame X or Y. "It takes a village". It requires "me" to get my ass off the couch, it requires a friend to ask we go for a hike, and so on.

We got many solutions and many problems. We have to pick the better activity (sit vs walk)(smoke vs not)(etc..)

Having said that, LLMs can help, but the issue with relying on an LLM (imho) is that it you take a wrong path (like Interstellar's TARS the X parameter is too damn high) you can be detailed, while a decent (certified doc) therapist will redirect you to see someone else.

HenryBemis··on How to not pay your taxes legally, apparently
The issue with democracy (which imho is by far the best political system) is that the parties can collect "donations" which (again just imho) is legalized bribing and ultimately ends up creating servants of the sponsors and not the voters.

People are not heroes. They want to be elected, hire the ones they want for their "court" (think Kings and their courts). And politicians want to change only the things that won't stop them from getting reelected.

Secondary consequences are irrelevant to many politicians' mindset.

HenryBemis··on How to not pay your taxes legally, apparently
How not to pay your taxes:

  1) be rich (or even better filthy rich)
  2) go to PWC/EY/etc, pay them handsomely, let them work their magic
  3) they got offices all over the planet and are updated on every single legislation/regulation around the planet
  4) they (PWC/EY/..) make sure you use the very best ways, tailor-made to not pay taxes. This could mean thwt you need to move and live to some random village in Switzerland (IKEA dude, the writer of the Alchemist (Paulo Coelho)).
  5) never pay taxes
HenryBemis··on Show HN: Jobs by Referral: Find jobs in your LinkedIn network
Every social media company/app wants us know to live by their notifications. This is why you shouldn't have any such app installed. I stopped using CNN and BBC apps almost immediately after I installed them on my 'then' smartphone on day1. I prefer the non-intrusive Firefox with its adblockers than the constant harassment of some random even that is not interesting and definitely not relevant to my life. LinkedIn is the meaning at useless unless looking for work, and even then 20mins in your PC will do just fine.
HenryBemis··on Ask HN: Worth leaving position over push to adopt vibe coding?
I fear that when the CFO and CEO will walk in holding a hammer and a saw, the CTO will start blaming the Directors for not "maximizing value" by "misusing" AI.. because why blame the tech when you can fire 20 more devs/engineers and hire 20 more eager and cheaper ones...?

As for the long term consequences.. I suggest "in front of your nose" by Orwell.

HenryBemis··on A client wants to buy old SaaS app – smart move or risk?
What is the(ir) reputation? Do they delay payments? Do they try to find reasons not to pay?

I will oversimplify this (and I work like this when I have to pick a service (anything from SaaS to hiring one of them Big4+2 for a project): I want jeans. I look around. I buy jeans. I am willing to pay full price for jeans. I give proper project reqs/scope of work up front. If they fuck up, I fuck them usiny with the SLA/OLA. I also shit on them to anyone who ever brings them back (with real and damning info). If they do a good/great/their job, I "marry" them until the end of time.

If these guys "appreciate" you what you are, go for it. If they make you jump through 100 hoops then a) tht already picked option Z and they want the rest of you to voluntarily drop out of the race either through pricing (keep adding reqs and keeping the price fixed), or through features (keep adding reqs that they KNOW/sense you cannot deliver e.g. 'oh your app doesn't do liquids? too bad we wanted espresso to go with it).

Either way.. (and judging by the numbers you provided): - from scratch 60k - enhance 13k-38k

Even at the lower end (13k) it is still (almost) 25% of the whole thing..

Doesn't look like a good deal for you.

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: What are non-social media ways to share photography/art
Second post, more relevant: unless you will want to monetize your photos, 99.999% will never be seen/noticed unless you make a strong push (bots boosting views, etc)

If you don't care for the HQ/megapixels, you can always join Insta and "hide" it, so you can relive your photo-walk (as I do with my YYYY-MM-DD NameOfCity) and subfolder "Selection". Kinda like a photographic Journal. Offline for your ACDSee (you can find for free some archaic/portable version or use private Insta for your own date-sorted-photo-journal.

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: What are non-social media ways to share photography/art
After a photowalk I make a "selection" subfolder where I pick the best photos (sometimes with a minimal crop/rotate) like one other commenter commented.

(Back in the day... when I went through my weekly/monthly-photowalks years, I used 500px because I wanted to have my "HQ" photos accessible online (but away from social media). For some reason I dumped them many-many years ago (I think they introduced some pricing setup that I was unwilling to follow. Then I "moved" to Tumblr because they had a nice setup (I remember you could upload a batch of 10-15 photos and have them mixed landscape and portrait and you could click to enlarge etc.) but my (unique) hashtags were quickly hijacked (imagine a brand new #sunsetinXYZisland tag being used for anal porn within the hour).

So now I keep everything on my laptop (and ext drive)(and Carbonite) and I have a 10+yo ACDSsee ultimate license and share nothing with no-on. Perhaps when I die, whoever "inherits" my digital archives may be interested to keep the "selection" subfolders, but I have determined that when we die nobody will care for the thousands of photos and GBs of videos.

My best friend died almost a year ago. We have been together to many-many concerts where he would record almost the whole concerr (VERY difficult to record a Metallica concert (or ten) while headbanging) to never watch these.

..all these moments will be lost in time.. (to quote one of the best movie lines ever from on of the best movies ever) (sorry for the pessimism, it's just that 'we' tend to spend time holding a camera (mostly on a smartphone) instead of living those moments, that they will eventually be lost in time...)

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: How have you shared computers with your young child (~3 to 5)
You get trashed and I don't understand why. Many of us "here" that are pushing at the range 45-85 grew up 0-10) without smartphones, 'interweb', computers, etc. My first 'machine" was an Atari (cartridge/joystick). My second machine was Amstrad PC 1512. Although I am not a coder "I do alright in IT". My moto is that if I do alright a d started with no tech until X years old, then for someone to be as good as me in "IT/computers" they could be easily start at 2X. Definitely not at 5.

At that point the thing is to please you/free you some time/tell your colleagues that your kid wrote XYZ in "ruby on rails"/etc.

A kid wants to play. Give it YT and it will binge cartoons and Mr Beast (where its brain is "programmed". Give it a ball and go to the park and your kid will never (don't quote me) have asthma.

Take your pick folks!

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: How have you shared computers with your young child (~3 to 5)
You can root a Fire, change its launcher, disable the bloatware, install the PDF/epub/etc. reader of your choice, and you end up with cool tablet-readee that has battery for days!!! HenryBemis··on Ask HN: Which skill do you believe will take the longest to be replaced by AI?
I have "programmed" Copilot to do some Q&A work. For my org the team should scale to 50 to make it effective. My idea and implementation will keep us to ~20 with the capability of dropping it to 5 (organically). I don't think anyone will double my salary though, so there is your real life impact. Now take that and apply it to at least "10 areas" in every org above 10k headcount. It won't change life on earth, but considering that this has just began...
HenryBemis··on Ask HN: Startup shutting down, should we open source?
And or if you got any dependencies (even to "open" 'stuff') when vulnerabilities and bugs arise that will break the backwards compatibility to your codebase you will definitely be tempted/lured/asked to spend "only 5 mins" to update it.

Just don't. Keep a copy wherever others suggested, keep a photo in the folder with the ex-bf/gf think about it every few years (I wonder how she is doing - in a Morty voice) and quickly move on!

HenryBemis··on Denmark to tackle deepfakes by giving people copyright to their own features
There is the (helpful to distinguish) 'gap' here. The media org that will report on a politician (for good or bad), will use the politician's 'news-PR-approved-actual-photo-provided-by-the-politician's-PR-team' (the serious one for war-news, the smiling one for the tax-breaks, and so on). They won't deepfake/use midjourney to create a photo of the politician eating an ice-cream while a pigeon is pooping on him (something that Colbert/Kimmel/Meyes/et al would do - clearly as a parody).

But me (not really) on my website (I don't have one) where I trash politicians (I don't) and post a photo of said politician eating poop, that should be 'frowned upon'. (Or worse to shame an ex-gf or a colleague that 'won't yield to my sexual advances').

While reading the article though, I thought of the cases where a paparazzo takes a photo of CelebrityA, then the CelebrityA posts said photo to her Insta (without getting permission from the agency) and the agency sues her. Now (in Denmark) the CelebrityA can sue the paparazzo for taking her photo in the first place (right?). This would protect people from getting uncomfortable photos.

HenryBemis··on Show HN: Built a Food Scanner for Longevity
I use Fatsecret, so I can calculate my protein and calories. I tend to travel, so there are barcodes from many countries. And irrespective of the country, the app fails 20% of the barcodes which is the only annoyance on the app (I workaround 'searching' for something similar - I don't care to record perfectly the mg of protein, but ballpark is good enough).

I wonder (not really) how you will find & complete the library (no need to explain) of barcodes and for how many countries/continents.

Some people (e.g. me) don't care to see (e.g.) the "mTOR Activation" but care for Protein, Calories, Electrolytes, etc. So perhaps make it (if you haven't already) customizable, so that people can disable/deactive the 100 metrics, and keep the few they really care for.

HenryBemis··on Show HN: AI Phone Interviewer – get a call in 30 seconds
If there is any 'decision' being made with that screening, you can't run this with GDPR. You can't have the 'machine' make a life-impacting decision such as employing someone, there is no 'explainability', no re-do by a human. Someone with time to spare can ramp up your legal costs in court, and they won't have to pay a dime/cent even if they lose.. because GDPR (also the EUDPS's people will have a party on your expense).

Also considering that your 'AI' collects and processes, voice, name, PII, perhaps financial data, etc... good luck with the DPIA!
