Hendrikto··on Mozilla shutting down Solo AI website creator
The annual reports are public. You can look up yourself how much money they are squandering each year. Mozilla is actually incredibly well funded. They are just extremely mismanged.
Hendrikto··on Mozilla shutting down Solo AI website creator
I and a lot of other people would be more than willing to donate to Firefox. But not to Mozilla, who keep throwing money out of the window. Also, the executives kept raising their own salary while market share declined, and while firing developers doing the actual work.

Mozilla is extremely mismanaged.

Hendrikto··on Mozilla shutting down Solo AI website creator
Another unasked for and fruitless side-project from Mozilla that did nothing but burn money and distract from their core product. Who could have seen it coming?
Hendrikto··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
And for what benefit? 9/10 ”problems“ HR ”solves“ were created by them in the first place. HR is a net negative to society.
Hendrikto··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
It is not at all about race. It is about the lifestyle. And you definitely choose that yourself.
Hendrikto··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Paid content moderation teams are also biased and partial.
Hendrikto··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
If you do not want to learn, and take every shortcut available to avoid it, university might not be the path for you.
Hendrikto··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
> I don't see how it's worth having any emotions or opinions about it.

Ironic, seeing as that is an opinion about it. Also weird telling people in an online discussion forum not to have opinions.

Hendrikto··on The case against JPEG XL
> This rules out JPEG XL's lossless advantage, which in practice is only roughly 11.9% smaller than lossless WebP anyway

> It cannot be worth bringing a new image codec to browsers to save 12%

What? 12% is huge.

Hendrikto··on Anthropic boss Dario Amodei calls for AI development to slow down
> Nearly everyone building these systems is outspokenly concerned about grave consequences. Existential.

That is what they are claiming. I do not believe them.

Hendrikto··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
> The url parameter uses a custom, Google-specific encoding.

So that will be figured out, making the whole exercise void. Google knows this. What is the real goal here?

Hendrikto··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
The website, desktop app, and mobile apps all have different feature sets, for one. There are things that you can only do in one of them, but it is a different one of them for each thing. There is no one feature set. It feels so cobbled together, with each platform doing their own thing.

Also, the website is slow and buggy, and the Electron “desktop” app is even worse. Both gobble up way too many resources and soft-crash constantly. The app does not lock up, but simply stops working. Often it even shows an error like “Spotify cannot play this song right now.”.

Hendrikto··on SQLite as a Document Database (2020)
https://sqlite.org/appfileformat.html

It is not a bad idea. It is a very flexible and stable format.

Hendrikto··on SQLite as a Document Database (2020)
It almost always does. People put so much effort into building layers of abstractions to avoid using SQL, while just writing it directly would be much faster, easier, more readable, easier to maintain, modify, and debug. I do not get it.
Hendrikto··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
> the fact that person A can't send $ to person B via normal bank infrastructure is interesting.

I would call that outrageous. It is my money. I earned it. I paid taxes on it. Let me fucking use it.

That is what I like about crypto. What I have is actually mine. I can send it to whomever I want at any time.

Hendrikto··on New EU-wide product repair rules come into force
Vendors do not have to support their product indefinitely. They have to design their products in a way that they do not become useless after support ends. E.g. by opening up the bootloader and letting users install custom software.
Hendrikto··on New EU-wide product repair rules come into force
I recently had to throw out a first gen iPad that was physically still in mint condition (even including the battery, somehow), simply for the lack of support essentially turning it into a useless brick.
Hendrikto··on Former OC actor Ben McKenzie on crusade to take down 'stupid' cryptocurrency
He has the most basic misunderstandings on the very foundations of crypto. He is not trying to understand. He is trying to make headlines to sell his movie.
Hendrikto··on Wi-Fi 8 is the first wireless upgrade in years that isn't chasing speed
I think the point is that these numbers are theoretical, and only reachable in a lab. So in practice you do not really benefit.
Hendrikto··on OpenLogi
> I'd rather read some well written LLM text over some poorly written human effort

I could not disagree more.

Hendrikto··on OpenLogi
It indicates that the author likes to take shortcuts and avoid work.
Hendrikto··on Should you stop cracking your knuckles?
There is definitely a cool down between being able to crack joints. But it is very subjective, and also dependent on your posture, etc.
Hendrikto··on Germany Records Historic 12B KWh Solar Feed-In in July 2026
Yeah, it is incredible: https://www.netto-online.de/balkonkraftwerk-1000w-800w-solar...

For those not speaking German: Base price (incl. tax) for the bundle is 210€, plus 60€ shipping, minus 30€ sale, so 240€ for a complete set, including tax and delivery.

Hendrikto··on Germany Records Historic 12B KWh Solar Feed-In in July 2026
Even way less than that. 1000W solar panels + 800W micro inverter can be bought for roughly 250€ right now.
Hendrikto··on Go 1.27 Interactive Tour
Methods on generic types were already a thing. What is new is that methods can now define their own generic parameters, independent of the type they are defined on.
Hendrikto··on Go 1.27 Interactive Tour
Go Generics work differently than those in Java. They are specialized, meaning that they are not generic at runtime anymore. Instead, the compiler creates a different implementation for each type.

At runtime, there are only List[int], List[string], etc. List[T] is not a thing anymore.

Hendrikto··on RamenHaus
> it takes me literally 20 seconds sometimes to finish a $20+ burger, and then I'm just sitting there waiting for people to delicately nibble their way through

Honestly, that sounds like a you problem. Maybe try eating instead of guzzling. You may even find time to enjoy the food.

Hendrikto··on Golang proposal: container/: generic collection types
> the fact you cannot define custom methods for external types in Go

Just wrap them. The external type is theirs. Make your own wrapper and do whatever you like with it.

People want every language to adapt to them, instead of adapting themselves to the language.

Hendrikto··on I flagged two research papers for fake authors and both were accepted as orals
We should oust and shun anybody being caught producing or spreading fake science. This is some of the most egotistical, anti-social behavior imaginable.
