Hates_··on Ask HN: Making money with ebooks and video courses vs. writing apps?
Thinking back to some example eBooks that have been popular and have done well are those that are quite niche. Off the top of my head some that I can think of are "Working with Unix Processes" and "Mastering Modern Payments". I don't think writing another intro to Javascript would be a good idea.

Hates_··on Show HN: Restore tmux environment after a system restart
I use tmuxinator to launch services I need, then I just kill the session when I'm done.

Hates_··on Shazam for Mac
Not really. The app only picks up music from ambient mic input. Your app looks like something I've needed for a while though!
Hates_··on Shazam for Mac
No speakers on my desktop sadly.
Hates_··on Shazam for Mac
Wish it could pick up music from internal audio. Plenty of times I've wanted to try detecting music in YouTube videos.
Hates_··on Vagrant with Docker: How to set up Postgres, Elasticsearch and Redis on Mac OS X
As someone who uses brew versions of postgres, elasticsearch and redis, what benefit would I get moving to a setup like this?

I worked on something that did just that: http://www.newstrapper.com/
Hates_··on Netflix 4K streaming goes live but only on newest TVs
Every in-store demo I've watched has been very impressive, even on screens around the 50" size.
Hates_··on Sales for Hackers
I read the same book after it was mentioned here on HN. Definitely worth a read and isn't particularly long either.
Hates_··on Stripe vs. Paymill
One big difference between the two is that from what I understand is that with Stripe you use a shared merchant account where as with Paymill everyone get's their own. This explains why with Stripe you can be approved in minutes where as Paymill can take up to a few months at times.
Hates_··on Will Google Kill my Blog on December 6th?
I don't think it's the 6th of December yet.
Hates_··on VLC 2.1.0
Switching to the dark theme has made it more pleasant for me, but there is still room for improvement.

I've found Readkit + Newsblur on the desktop and the NewsBlur iOS apps have filled the gap nicely.

Hates_··on Say Hello on Minus Chat, share and meet new friends.
The site tells me nothing about the app. "Share and meet new friends", okay well who are they and how does it match me to people? Can I chat with people I already know? How does this differ to all the other chat apps already out there?

Hates_··on Show HN: NewsTrapper.com - One click news tracking
I'm one of the co-founders of NewsTrapper. Our MVP currently only finds the stories related to the original one you followed, but our long term plan is to build in summarised timelines. Like you, I don't want to have to sift through loads of story either and just want to get the jist of what I'm interested in.

Our big vision is that eventually we'll be able to build up a searchable collection of summarised timelines on nearly any news stories or articles we crawl on the web.

Hates_··on Hey Startups, I’m calling bullshit. You don’t understand sales
It depends on which part of sales you want to focus on. I've yet to find a good book which covers the discipline as a whole. Many seem to either focus on the psychology, prospecting or just closing of sales.

I'm part way through "New Sales. Simplified" which seems heavily based on "prospecting" which a lot of books seem to neglect. I've also got Dan Pink's "To Sell is Human" lined up next which is more about the psychological aspects. Many of the classic sales books by Zig Ziglar or Brian Tracy seem, IMO, to be more closing focused.

Hates_··on Fltdsgn - a showcase of flat UI design
A lot of webfonts seem to render badly in Windows Chrome. I've yet to find a solution apart from blacklisting certain fonts.
Hates_··on Show HN: Learner Approved Motorbikes
Learner approved for what country? The rules here in the UK are horribly complicated and sadly a lot of the suggestions do not apply.
Hates_··on VPN Services That Take Your Anonymity Seriously
I would have thought that being the named owner of the VPS exposes you legally somehow, also that performing something like "illegal file-sharing" would be against your VPS's TOS.

Hates_··on Winter chills limit range of the Tesla Model S electric car
The video is of someone driving directly to it. The driver ignores the first right in favour of the second then takes an immediate left and right to where the the charger is.

The video makes it seem as if the charger is easy to find, but only if you know where it is already. I can't see how anyone who has never visited that station before would be able to make the same bee-line for the charger without circling the parking lot at least once.

Hates_··on HipChat releases native app for Mac
And what about teams that aren't technical? Are you saying there still isn't a need for this type of software?

Besides, HipChat gives you a lot of nice features that you'd have to spend a lot of time trying to do yourself. Paying a small amount of money a month so that my whole team can chat far outweighs the pain of rolling my own solution and making sure everyone can use it.

Hates_··on Why GitHub’s pricing model stinks (for us)
I'm collaborating on some projects on Bitbucket and it has pretty much everything you need. It doesn't have some of the nice little touches that Github has like autocomplete emoji etc, but nothing that wouldn't make me miss Github if I had to move over to it 100% for private repos.

Hates_··on Basecamp Breeze officially launched
No, but creating the product is a very small piece of the puzzle. 37Signals have a good amount of existing customers and what looks like a well greased marketing machine. That's what'll make this successful or not.
