Yep, there was also a program where a red line would be on your monitor and you had to turn the screw until the line was completely flat

HNDen21on In the 1980s we downloaded games from the radio

I did this all the time... even used a double cassette deck to make copies... azimuth was the problem if the heads were aligned different.. so you used a small screwdriver and the top of the cassette had a small opening, this is where you had to align the heads by listening till it didn't sound distorted.. fun times

That's why you needed it saved with Turbo. it was at least 10 times faster.. I used to have this cartridge... besides turbo it had some more things, it could grab a hardcopy of memory (ie if you were playing a game.. you could save it... and then load it later, it would be in the same state)

HNDen21on 20 years ago Gmail revolutionized email. It's time for a new revolution

I remember those, you got 5 of them... later Google Wave also had invites .. which was cool but ended up in the graveyard anyway... Lifehacker's Gina Trapani even wrote a guide to Google Wave but I believe Wave was killed right before after it was published

HNDen21on 20 years ago Gmail revolutionized email. It's time for a new revolution

I remember using OWA (Outlook Web Access) before that.. but you are right this is the one that stands out..... soon after this Digg was created and the onslaught of all the web 2.0 sites like delicious, flickr etc etc

HNDen21on Google to invest up to $2B in Anthropic

I would not consider the investment as a % of market cap since Google doesn't own all that market cap... I would consider the non float shares + short term investments + cash on hand or Revenue/Profit better

Antarica is problematic since it is completely dark 4 months out of the year... and completely sunny the opposite 4 months.. and even then isn't it just rocks underneath that ice.. you would need to bring in soil etc.. but if all the ice melts will that even be above water at that point?

I have been in the US for 30 years but metric is way better... all that nanometer stuff in your computer is metric not imperial as well

for example a 10cm cube filled with water weighs 1 kilo and is 1 liter, boils at 100 degrees. In the US you deal with cups pints, quarts, gallons... and you can't even convert easily between dry and liquid stuff

I do agree that steering wheels should be on the left :-)

HNDen21on Teen-age fentanyl deaths in a Texas county

A lot of these overdoses are because they think they are taking genuine Xanax or Percocet

Many of the Hays County kids who overdosed thought they were taking Xanax or Percocet; instead, the pills turned out to be counterfeits laced with fentanyl. Fentanyl is easier and cheaper to manufacture than natural opioids. It’s also much stronger, and can be unevenly distributed in counterfeit pills, making dosing more difficult

HNDen21on When did New York start building slowly?

I used to live in NYC, here are a few that come to mind...

Art/museums... top notch collections

Restaurants... you can find any type of food here

Sports.. I used to go to the US Open tennis every year... then there is football, baseball, MLS soccer.. all of these are within 1 hour

Sit down at a restaurant table on a sidewalk and just people watch

Broadway shows

Concerts

Beaches are close by

Hunter mountain for skiing is not too far

3 airports that have flight going everywhere

Those are just a few........
