GrandMasterBirt··on Browser Shootout: IE vs. FF vs. Chrome vs. Safari vs. Opera
I am still surprised at how Firefox lags behind, as in the lack of progress there. On Ubuntu 9.10 x64 firefox is horrifically slow. The only reason I don't run chrome for everything is because I can't reload a single frame and firebug is just uber better than chrome's kits.
GrandMasterBirt··on Ubisoft’s Uber DRM Cracked Within a Day
I thought that the big drm issue was that the game saves on ubisoft's servers vs your harddrive.

To me that in itself is very unappealing, but that is what is "missing" from the game. If that has been cracked already then that just goes to show that good DRM can at best delay cracking the game, meanwhile there is a saying "Whenever DRM prevents a customer willing to buy the game form buying it, a pirate gets his wings"

GrandMasterBirt··on Linked list patent
For example: I come up with a system where basically I define 1 xml file which is then read by 3 different mechanisms to generate the m/v/c of a web application. the definition significantly saves times on web development when using the system.

Now look the argument is "oh its just a few algorithms used in a certain way, that should not be patented". however how is that any different than creating a ammo holder for .45mm bullets which can be put into any gun that can use .45mm bullets? Its just taking some metal and springs and putting them together in some novel way which has not yet been done before.

Remember once you see the invention that is TRULY innovative AND simple but nobody quite thought of using it that way before, it becomes a no-brainer. You start to think "yea given a few hrs I can make one of these myself without any special training or anything, without even looking at schematics, or even taking the one I have apart" but the fact is that nobody thought of it before.

The fact is, it was mentioned in a '96 letter, we must decide what part of programming is the "words" and what part is the "innovation" so that people can't do the equivalent of copyrighting words, but they can copyright books (the end product). (yes I am aware that patent != copyright, but try to see the analogy)

GrandMasterBirt··on Google uses only low-cost, off-the-street pigeons for its clusters
Awesome. However I've been working on sqerrel based slgorithms. Rodents seem to be able to multiply faster and thus provide better scalability than pidgeons. The problem is that my competitor who's doing feline ranking keeps sending cats to my farm with disasterous consequences.
GrandMasterBirt··on Use html5 video tags in html with flash fallback for old browsers
But at the very least there is one simple client side mechanism for doing all this, you just worry about the encoding and you let google worry about rendering it. It is good progress. We just need about an inch or two more till we hit the finish line though.
GrandMasterBirt··on Javascript: A Language in Search of a Standard Library and Module System
Just had this SAME conversation with co-workers yesterday. Funny eh.

The fact is, while you chose Rhino to get access to Java libs and frameworks for SSJS development, there is still NO WAY for me to write an open source JS framework that will work in any environment. Not to mention anything I run will probably have tons of different implementation of the same few bits of code, not referring to common libraries for inclusion or whatever. Even how files are included is different depending on your environment. We seriously need a standard. Even if half of it is implemented in javascript like Java Standard Libs are implemented in java (ok lots use java native interfacing).

GrandMasterBirt··on Help find missing kids by putting them on your 404 page
The thing is, he is more correct on another issue. The 404 page will help but the REAL issue is location-based reporting.

The real problem why I can't find missing kids is because I don't know which ones are missing in my area. The down side is that I won't get to see kids missing in CA while I am in NY and the CA kid was taken to NY.

The idea is: we need a service where given a person's location we can generate the right set of missing children (those who are from the area, or might have gone to the area).

After that we just need to put this information everywhere where important information is not displayed (free areas) like 404 pages, or anything or "please wait while we process xyz data, o and look at these missing children vs this progress bar"

GrandMasterBirt··on Apple's stance on multitasking and why most tech users are clueless
Hey its true. My wife the other day complained about how her blackberry is super slow. Guess how many apps shes running:

AIM, Google Talk, Browser, Brickbreaker possibly, Google Maps, Facebook (a killer). Yea its easy to tell whats running (alt-tab of sorts) but she never made that leap. Hey maybe its just facebook.

GrandMasterBirt··on Simplicity is hard. Let’s go shopping
This article is really an anti-hording thing. I immediately realized how many items I have in my house that go unused FOREVER. My wife has been begging me to throw some things out.

I am considering just looking through anything, if its a wire that has a 60% chance of being usused forever, scrapped, a cd, scrapped, a tv, scrapped. I want to do the same with my kid's toys (she has lots but plays with a key few (3year old), I mean really the biggest things we use are our computers.

Although I found a use for old textbooks: Computer monitor stands.

GrandMasterBirt··on Forced by the EU: Microsoft puts its browser selection site live.
Woa woa woa, clearly MS has the monopoly on minesweeper, nobody cares about Solitaire.
GrandMasterBirt··on Ask YC: Javascript and server-side programming, which is harder for you?
For me javascript is harder. Actually server-side is javascript too. Client-side js is harder because of browser issues, and the fact that client-side js I worry about more things like performance because the client can have a piece of shit pentium 4 workstation with ie6.
GrandMasterBirt··on Space Invaders Enterprise Edition
"Enterprise software needs to be at least $1,000 per seat per year"

Enterprise software needs to be at least $1,000 per alien per shot.

FTFY.

Edit: Other reasons why its not enterprisie enough:

1) It does not run in a server cluster.

2) It does not run using a oracle tripple-redundant database.

3) It does not have a recovery plan in case the city is nuked to ensure that the game can continue playing from just where you left off by restoring from backups.

4) It does not have an audit trail so that any time the spaceship shoots an alien we can point to which accountant did it.

GrandMasterBirt··on JQuery Quicksand plugin
Wow, would have never thought! Take that optimization!
GrandMasterBirt··on JQuery Quicksand plugin
Slow for me: FF 3.6 / Ubuntu
GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: How many of you look at http://news.ycombinator.com/newest?
I rarely read newest. I go to /classic usually.
GrandMasterBirt··on Talking to God
If you really take a look at it, it does not matter what religion or belief you follow. Once that belief includes someone taking power and ruling over people: The Pope, Stalin, Hitler, and take any modern dictator and add them to the list, the belief is up for corruption.

Remember power corrupts, and absolute power is just more fun. -- Benny Hill

GrandMasterBirt··on Talking to God
to any program you write you are god. You are expecting the result of that program to behave in a specific way, the program never ran but at any point of the program you can predict what will happen to the logic of the program. But to the program you are an omnipotent god, yet in reality you may have made some mistakes, gota kill and restart see if it works better after a bug fix.

The only question is: to the program, does it matter that you are god? Does it make any bit of a difference if it believes in you or not? Will the outcome change depending on that fact? Do you care if the program worships you? (unless you wrote a program to worship you)

GrandMasterBirt··on Talking to God
an incorrect assessment. As an atheist I believe that the concept of god as put forth by religious is ridiculous. That is all. God is invisible to all senses, his logic completely defies our logic, knows all bug gives us free will (um a contradiction), the sun revolves around the earth (oh wait that was only discarded 30 or so years ago).

The point is a religion that does not teach "treat all human beings regardless of believes or values as human beings and as your own people, try to figure out what is right and what is wrong together rather than impose values from an ancient book and it's infinite interpretations on everyone. As a human being you can make mistakes but you must take responsibiltiy for them." or something to that extent. Since I have yet to see one religion state this I cannot subscribe to any religion nor can I believe any notions of god. Remember the notion of "god" is christian/muslim/jewish. Other religions believe in many gods, or spirits, or something that is not quite what our "god" is. Who is to say that "god" is what I should believe in, vs "gods" of the hindus, etc.

GrandMasterBirt··on Google Buzz? More Like Buzz Kill
I think the idea is to integrate buzz, facebook, twitter all into one inbox in your gmail account so you can respond in the same format you got the message in. So it don't matter if your friend is on fb or twitter or whatever you just go to 1 inbox.
GrandMasterBirt··on A flat rate approach to micropayments
Very nice idea. The problem is that if content providers don't subscribe to it, then they don't get it. What should happen is that flattr should allow for us to report who we want to give to even if they don't have a button. Then at the pay time, flattr tells the content providers about themselves and that people want to give them money for their services. And thus marketing to the providers and providers get money even if they didn't know about it.
GrandMasterBirt··on Computers shouldn't make people feel like idiots
Another addition:

My grandmother just played a Wii for the first time. Now my Grandmother has NEVER seen the thrill of video games since she first saw them 16 years ago. I mean she had no desire to play any whatsoever. When she saw me with the Wii she actually said "looks like fun, can I try?" and we played a game of bowling on the Wii. She didn't quite get the buttons but the motions she did and she had an absolute blast.

Its all about interaction with the computer, and letting people interact with it in a natural way. Geeks care about "multitasking" on a computer, non-geeks care about their computers always running at top speed for any application they use. They don't care that you can have 100 windows open at a given time, just the fact that 1 is open and works well and they'll close it an open another. How many people here enjoy the fact that the blackberry allows multi-tasking and you have to spend time worrying about background processes sucking up your cpu?

I think this is the reason why the chrome os has tons of potential.

GrandMasterBirt··on Robot Mice Solve Mazes With Blazing Speed (Video)
I like how eventually the AI knows to just go diagonally (with some corrections) through some zigzags. Also pretty impressive just how fast the reactions are, not necessarily from a computational standpoint but from seeing just how slow human reaction is.
GrandMasterBirt··on H.264 will remain royalty-free until 2016 for free Internet content [pdf]
Exactly. However how is that any different than Blue-Ray? Same crap, everyone is moving to BR and sony wants every disk burned to have a license unless its personal use, not to mention a whole lot of restrictions like by 2012 all non-hi-def input won't be supported, and diminished quality for non-hi-def inputs today intentionally even though it is unnecessary.
GrandMasterBirt··on Woz says there's an acceleration problem with his Toyota Prius
Woz != god. Woz != says so therefore it most likely is so.

However if he can reproduce this quite easily then there is probably a software bug. And Toyota can't afford a recall. Honestly this just has to be taken to courts, its the driving force of our economy.

GrandMasterBirt··on Microsoft exceeds goal of 5,000 layoffs
I guess Microsoft exceeds in all aspects, even layoffs!
GrandMasterBirt··on "Adobe ignored reader problem for 2 years, now ignoring solution"
Well this just goes to explain why Adobe is failing and why apple is boxing plugins in separate processes and everyone is pushing for HTML 5's <video> and <audio> tags. The fact is, nobody wants adobe's crap, because everyone seems to be able to fix these stupid bugs except for adobe.
GrandMasterBirt··on British nukes were only protected by bike locks
That's fine, as long as the warheads could not be detonated it does not matter where they go.

The point is that you can arm a British nuke in 98 with a bicycle lock key and no tamper-proof mechanism was there. So if you got a warhead detonation was easy. In the US having a warhead is pointless, you need the codes or the bomb is worthless.

GrandMasterBirt··on [dead]
Will there be a call for some erlangbposts??? I rly want to know moar about erlang!!! I been waiting for the call so that finally hn will have decent stories vs all iMaxiPad crap.
GrandMasterBirt··on FCC probes Google, T-Mobile for double-whammy termination fees
Oy FINALLY people are catching on to this. Ive sold cell phones since 2002 and here is the deal:

Basically non t-mobile, verizon or whatever stores are independent stores. They buy a phone, say for $500. Then a contract gives them a spiff for it, say $250. So the store charges you $300 for the phone and makes $50 off the sale. IF you terminate the contract with t-mobile or any of these companies before your contract is up AT ANY TIME, that $250 is not paid to the store, or is deducted from what the carrier owes the store. Basically the store (like google) MUST charge you $250 or they lose more money than they made off of your sale.

This is why the little cellphone stores make you sign similar agreements. Now how the company recoups the "price of the phone" by early termination fee, I don't know. The fee is pure profit for the carrier.

GrandMasterBirt··on Google's MapReduce patent: what does it mean for Hadoop?
I just wish that google pushed this patent to the extreme and trolled everyone, and then went to congress to say "see we just shut down half the web, patent laws are currently fucked up and need changing"
