Goosey··on O'Reilly discounts: machine learning, nltk, hadoop, sql, nosql, aws and appeng
I find that I simply can't use ebooks. Sitting and reading on a computer monitor for long periods of time is just too much strain on my eyes. Funny enough that I don't have as much issue coding all day or reading hackernews.. but if I sit and try to read multi-page articles or ebooks it just seems impossible to do if it isn't on paper.

This is the one thing that tempts me into a Kindle. I wouldn't want to replace my existing books (or stop purchasing new books when available), but an increasing amount of 'long form' content I am interested in seems to be in digital-only format... and self-printing is prohibitively expensive.

Goosey··on Google Releases mod_pagespeed for Apache
This made me realize just how strongly Google is tied to the success of 'the internet' vs the traditional desktop. There isn't much in their strategy that doesn't make sense if you stop trying to figure out how it ties into seach/advertising and if you see how it just enhances the internet as a whole.

edit: of course enhancing the internet increases the number and frequency of people interacting with their search, adwords on pages, and feeling comfortable with web apps (helping create lead for Google Apps B2B)

Goosey··on Radical new input system coming for mobile devices: 8pen
I am looking forward to trying this out. I have been a complete convert to Swype since getting my DroidX, so I am totally sold on the idea of trying new interfaces.
Goosey··on Microsoft picks HTML5 over Silverlight for Internet apps
It's still dangerous to them. They are the de-facto standard for Flash creation tools, but there is a much larger ecosystem for HTML5/Javascript tools. Even discounting existing HTML5/Javascript tool users who may or may not have a grudge against Adobe for Flash you still have to expect a significant amount of currently-Flash devs during the transition.
Goosey··on Heroku is down for the third time today
Not unique to it, but it is implicit in it. This matters. If you are at the size where you can't have a dedicated staff monitoring your uptime 24/7 than you are at the size where a cloud solution is going to be more responsive than what you can afford.
Goosey··on Heroku is down for the third time today
Are there any companies that provide 'server host failure' insurance for instances like this? It seems like a possible opportunity.
Goosey··on Evernote 4 for Windows is here
I find this to be an interesting case study in the failure of .NET and WPF to deliver on their promises. It's a sample size of 1 and all, but it's one of the first examples I have seen where a client was written from scratch in .NET/WPF and then re-written from scratch in C++ in order to overcome performance limitations.
Goosey··on Notifo (YC W10) Growl for Windows plugin released
You are describing my work flow already and I didn't even need to install this. I only needed to check HN enough times when I hit compile that it is now some sort of a muscle-memory reflex.
Goosey··on Why Apple saddled the MacBook Air with "gimped" CPUs
Posting an article as a comment due to it's relevancy without even a link to the HN submission for said article is awesome and self-less, but my redundancy-hating-programmer-brain wishes you had just posted a link to the submission. My brain is confused.
Goosey··on Apple deprecates Java
Your point about Android development may be the reason this move occurred. The IOS vs Android war is at full steam right now and Apple is known to be the aggressor in it thus far.
Goosey··on IDE WTF
Or it supports X language provided by Y plugin and per-line versioning elsewhere. Does a python programmer care if his magical VCS tool doesn't understand the semantics of !python code? I think the parent's suggestion is quite novel!
Goosey··on SVG vs PNG
The ubiquitous browser zoom is especially important, thanks for pointing this out! I do a lot of my web browsing from my couch with an atom powered desktop hooked up to the TV. I hate eye strain so I browser-zoom constantly.. And it is really annoying to see images become a blurred mess when I do this. :\
Goosey··on Visualization: Guy-to-girl ratio of every bar and restaurant in SF/NYC
There may be problems, as others have pointed out, but it still seems like a valuable tool for me. After all, I don't need it to be perfectly accurate.. just ballpark accurate in order to take advantage of it.

Please do Austin. :)

Goosey··on Chargify New Pricing
Make the old customers part of a 'legacy' tier which allows them to continue to pay the same and receive the same, but don't allow new customers to join that. Put new customers in the 'fancy shmancy' tier and allow old customers to migrate there (with price increase) for whatever new features you are adding.

It's still going to be a bitter pill for the old customers, but it IS better than saying "Sorry, you gotsa pay more now! Suckers!"

Goosey··on Google Cars Drive Themselves, in Traffic
One possible reason is what you just pointed out: If you have a 20 minute commute and you could trust your robotic driver to take care of it, that is 20 minutes you could be on your smart phone interacting with google advertising.

(personally I think the other comments about google doing it mostly because it is a hard, cool, worthwhile challenge are most on the money though)

Goosey··on Here comes Google TV
I wonder how the boxee.tv team is feeling about this. Must be a little frustrating to work for years putting together such a great product and then see a major player come in like this.
Goosey··on Rejection Therapy - The Real Life Game
Very insightful! I have long been trying to integrate the "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." way of thinking (this is the Gretzky quote, btw :)), but I never fully reasoned it out all the way: Not only am I passing up the chance, but I am receiving the same result as if the chance resulted in failure. In this way I now realize avoiding rejection is the same as being rejected. Powerful stuff.

Edit: Another anecdote that pops into my mind is Edison needing 10,000 tries to make the light-bulb. This means he failed 99,999 times. But we remember him for the success he had. (Queue pedants correcting the details of this anecdote ;))

Goosey··on What We Pay For
It seems a lot closer to a ponzi scheme than a pyramid scheme.

I do believe if I was funding an IRA/ROTH-IRA with that money I would be much better off. However, we are not funding OURSELVES, we are funding those who came before us. And while we may not get our payout (may not be funded my those who come after us) the fact is that those being funded right now deserve what they are getting. It's pretty selfish to just say 'if it isn't helping me, why should I care?'

Goosey··on Google offers JPEG alternative for faster Web
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/51/JPEG_JFIF...

JPEG looks better to me. It's only a data point of 1, but it's the most important data point to me. ;)

Goosey··on End of the Road for Xmarks
I agree 100%. This whole thing reminds me of reddit's recent budget issues and how their appeal resulted in a huge boost for them. Just looking at the comments on this blog post make me think that simply including a 'paypal donation' link at the bottom of this blog post ALONE would have generated enough funds to keep them running for for some time.

This is a bit of a harsh thing to say... but is it possible they were not able to find a business model due to lack of trying?

Goosey··on Start ups, please don't force me to log in with Facebook
It's pretty insecure. Beyond the obvious "I know both people and their emails and that they use this service" it would be trivial to do company email attacks (IE: all employees use (first-initial)(last-name)@(companyname).com so if I have a list of employees I can quickly access all combinations of those employees).

No idea what your service is about and if that level of security matters.

Permissions-based, perhaps? I often feel facebook is a little wiki-ish when I find myself tagged in a new album of photos a friend uploads.
Goosey··on Remote Pairing with Vim and TMux
Considering how infrequently I actually interact with other people in my own physical office (especially since we are all very conscious of not breaking each other out of the 'zone') this sounds fantastic.

I have tried to motivate usage of a engineering-team internal IRC channel and spread the use of screen-sharing software, but when people are physically so close the standard response is "why don't you just go talk to him?". Makes sense until you mix in the element of "I don't want to talk to him when he is obviously concentrating." Sprinkle a touch of e-mail overload making that medium useless and you have a strange atmosphere of working in proximity with one another, but not necessarily together.

Goosey··on Down with fun: The depressing vogue for having fun at work
Just sounds like your "other roommate"'s idea of what is fun was in different alignment from theirs. Rather than accept different tastes an attempt was made to coerce them (by use of negative language - "why not just play for fun") into playing for the same purpose he did. Unsurprisingly they found a way to have fun despite being forced into a new playing style.
Goosey··on Falling in love will cost you two close friends
This thread reads like an 'A Softer World' comic. :(
Goosey··on The Obligatory WePay "Company Culture" Blog Post
"Some of our employees have kids and leave earlier, put the kids to bed, and hop on IRC to help out if/when they can."

"separated work from personal life."

Sorry, but this whole defense is just making me angry. The issue for me is less that the long hours are worked (everyone there is there voluntarily, etc), the issue is that posts defending it in such a way that glorifies it. When you are throwing out statements that imply if you love what you do you will work 12 hours and if you work 8 hours you are watch the clock.. That indicates you a building a company culture of heroics that looks down on lesser people who choose to work with a reasonable life/work balance.

You have to understand that people would not be so critical about this point if they didn't feel an emotional stake in it. Since they are (presumably) not employed and directly affected, my belief is this: the mentality is dangerous and it spreads. Your employees will one day spread out and take that culture with them.

I escaped from the digital games industry for this very reason. What might have started as a cultural thing for a few early core companies is now an INDUSTRY WIDE practice of overwork, mismanagement, and exploitation. The culture continues to be persisted through hero stories. I have many friends still in the industry who seem bipolar in their stance towards it: One day they are complaining how on the nicest weekend of the summer they were working towards TRC requirements due to an overly ambitious schedule, the next they are bragging about working that weekend as proof of how hardcore they are and how much they love their job.

It's psychotic.
