GoodDreams··on More floating point alternatives
Consider representing money in cents ¢ instead of $, €, etc. Often it’s faster to parse a serialized integer then divide by 100 than to parse a decimal value. And sometimes it’s faster to serialize and sometimes you can serialize to fewer bytes. And often aggregation of integers is faster. And it may make supporting non-decimalized currencies, such as ¥, easier.

Ethical non-monogamy is one example.
GoodDreams··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Not sure if I had the same issues but my situation was resolved by cleaning my lightning port and using a quality cable.
GoodDreams··on Writerside – a new technical writing environment from JetBrains
I want tested code in my docs. I want my docs’ build to fail if sample code doesn’t actually work.
GoodDreams··on 'Couple,' 'Few,' and 'Several'
"most" to me means more than half. Many folks think it means somewhere around 2/3 or 3/4.
GoodDreams··on AAA Reports That 68 Percent of Americans Are Now Afraid of Autonomous Cars
I wonder what percentage are afraid of non-autonomous cars.
GoodDreams··on One common behavior seen in “mature” software engineers
I’m interested in understanding what it means to be a military minded coder.
GoodDreams··on Boeing 787s must be rebooted every 51 days to prevent 'misleading data' (2020)
Reminds me of: People said you can’t write a financial trading system in a garbage collected language. Turns out you can as long as you don’t garbage collect during the trading day by carefully managing allocations and manually running GC each day before trading starts.

Or the old story of the junior engineer who finds a memory leak in a missile’s guidance system and the senior engineer says the memory leak is fine as long as you don’t run out of memory before the missile completes its mission.

GoodDreams··on The case against empathy (2019)
“The End of Empathy” is an Invisibilia (NPR) episode arguing empathy for a person harms others. I find the episode to be an interesting window into how some folk think. https://www.npr.org/programs/invisibilia/712280114/the-end-o...

GoodDreams··on How Universal Control on macOS Monterey Works
Same. I considered switching iCloud accounts when I switch between work/personal modes but decided that the risk of accidentally leak information between account or losing data was too great.

At least with the Macs I can create a separate OS user account and have that account signed into the other iCloud account. Think iPad OS will support multiple users some day?

GoodDreams··on How Universal Control on macOS Monterey Works
With Sidecar I was hoping that physically connecting the iPad to the Mac would be enough. Would a physical connection (with perhaps an additional prompt) be a sufficiently secure authorization alternative? Putting my opsec hat on: I suppose someone could (theoretically) use an adapter to tunnel USB/Thunderbolt through a wireless connection to work around the need for a physical connection.
GoodDreams··on What’s the origin of the phrase “big data doesn’t fit in excel”?
A company I worked for defined big data as anything not analyzable with a relational database - a PDF or video was big data. Companies say they want the latest buzzword even though it’s against their own interest and other companies say “we can give that to you” and instead deliver something that is of actual value so the license gets renewed. Same thing happened with SOA, REST, microservices, blockchain. IBM developed a blockchain product just to get the sales conversations going and then sold something else. Imagine being on that product’s team.
GoodDreams··on I'm an interviewer at my company and burnt out
I stopped interviewing out of fear of being accused of bias and the subsequent effects of such an accusation.
GoodDreams··on PWA Store
My understanding is that Stripe offers UI to sign up for a subscription, but then offers only an API for other subscription actions such as changing from monthly to yearly or cancelling. Someone have a link describing Stripe's comprehensive UI for subscriptions?
GoodDreams··on PWA Store
Is there a simple way to charge for a monthly PWA subscription without coding a backend to handle the various subscription use cases and without providing a complicated UI to subscribers?
GoodDreams··on Ask HN: Does anyone have celiac disease and how do you deal with that?
Occasionally people will get angry that I won’t eat the same food they’re eating. This prompted me to get business cards printed where on one side is an acknowledgment of the social value of eating the same food together and an explanation that I cannot because if I do I will in severe pain. On the other side is a list of ingredients and foods that have gluten. I’ve found that when people see that their behavior has prompted me to get business cards printed they will stop and have empathy.
GoodDreams··on Google Culture War Escalates as Era of Transparency Wanes
Speaking of shame: Many people in the Bay Area blame tech workers for their woes. A friend of mine, an engineer at Google, also believes this and feels much shame. If they can focus on what others are doing wrong it makes them feel a little better.

GoodDreams··on Gibberish Asian Font Mystery Solved (2006)
The customer contract at the tattoo shop I worked at required customer to take full responsibility for understanding their tattoo, especially non-English words.

Also customers had to attest that they are not or have ever been a lawyer. The only person who read the entirety of the contract admitted she was a recovering lawyer. The tattoo artist made an exception.

Random side note: the artist I worked for fought for legislation to require tattoo ink manufacturers to publish the ingredients they use. Anyone know if such legislation ever passed?

GoodDreams··on Kill Instant Messaging
To clarify, I manage my notifications. I was referring to when pairing with people on their computer.
GoodDreams··on Kill Instant Messaging
When pairing I’m annoyed when a non-urgent IM or email notification pops up and I lose my pair’s focus. Some folks have their text messages and social media notifications popping up too, preventing concentration for more than a few minutes.
GoodDreams··on Microsoft staff are openly questioning the value of diversity
"Women in tech are a hot commodity," I heard one recruiter say to another.
GoodDreams··on “Organized Intimacy” events in the Bay Area
I thought about it more. My definition of normal is very inclusive. There are socially awkward, social butterflies, more and less conventionally attractive, retired and middle aged, married / unmarried, all sorts of gender identity and sexual preferences at these events. There are events specifically geared towards LGBTQIA+ folks. Many events are hetero-normative and gender normative - I think that’s a function of where people feel safe and find community.
GoodDreams··on “Organized Intimacy” events in the Bay Area
Almost all media coverage about my community seems to say “look, there’s this weird thing going on, isn’t that weird?!” I believe any short-form coverage of a community by someone not in that community and for people not in that community cannot accurately portray that community. Plus, media is a business and it helps to have some spin to get people to share the media.
GoodDreams··on “Organized Intimacy” events in the Bay Area
Good question. I honestly don’t know. The vast majority of these events are ones in which STI transmission could not occur because there is no skin contact or fluid exchange. At the events where transmission could occur I’d guess that those attendees are more knowledgeable about risks and prevention than the average population. And there’s the safer sex elevator speech before contact: http://reidaboutsex.com/safer-sex-elevator-speech-with-examp...
GoodDreams··on “Organized Intimacy” events in the Bay Area
I’d say that most of the people at these events are not in tech. As far as geeks vs jocks - I’d say it’s pretty much normal people. Or perhaps what’s normal for me. Perhaps slightly more hippy / burner than the average person.
GoodDreams··on “Organized Intimacy” events in the Bay Area
There’s a wide range of events. Some of the event types: lecture with Q&A, discussion groups, communication practice, non-sexual cudde parties, second-base parties, sex parties.

Events open to the public tend to be non-sexual and very structured. One needs to build trust in a community to be invited to other events.

Nearly all events have a hard start time after which no one is allowed to enter. The beginning of events cover rules and guidelines for the event. Then there’s usually some ice breaker such as introductions. After that it really depends on what kind of event we’re talking about.

GoodDreams··on “Organized Intimacy” events in the Bay Area
I have all the privilege. Some events are more diverse than others. It’s rare to meet someone under 30. Events skew towards the demographic of the location in which they’re held.
GoodDreams··on “Organized Intimacy” events in the Bay Area
I host such events in my home here in the Bay Area in addition to attending such events hosted by others. Happy to answer any questions.
