GlumWoodpecker··on FFmpeg 9.0
I've been waiting for this feature! Whenever I've encountered an animated WebP, I've had to drop it into ezgif.com to convert it to mp4, now I can just write a quick Bash function to transform it with ffmpeg.
GlumWoodpecker··on KOReader
KOReader is fantastic! I use it on my pocket-sized Xiaomi InkPalm 5 to read anywhere (I carry it at all times along with my phone). The combination of KOReader and the ease of use due to the size of the device has enabled me to read many more books than I used to, so I'm very happy with it. Being able to just turn on wifi and click "calibre" > "connect" to transfer books from my PC is a killer feature—the stock Kindle I keep in bed has to connect via USB to transfer new content (I don't use Amazon to buy content for it).
GlumWoodpecker··on Wireless LAN SD
I own a Ben NanoNote, at this point an ancient (2010) open-source, niche micro-laptop that ran a modification of OpenWrt. With a tiny keyboard and screen and all. It had no built-in anything, so the only way to get wireless connectivity on it was to buy one of these SDIO WLAN adapters. Had a lot of fun tinkering with that thing, maybe I should find it again...

GlumWoodpecker··on Linux gaming is faster because Windows APIs are becoming Linux kernel features
Disagree. The word "native" in a software execution context has a very specific meaning—it means that the software is running on the target hardware with no emulation, translation layer or modification by any middleware. Games running through Proton/WINE will never be native, by definition.

HN (and Reddit) are not social media, they are forums. Social media are platforms where the main purpose is to socialise. Forums are platforms where the main purpose is to discuss the topic of any given thread. Just because you can talk to someone, doesn't make it social media. I will die on this hill.

(Besides, an LLM would capitalise "vfx")

GlumWoodpecker··on This game is a single 13 KiB file that runs on Windows, Linux and in the Browser
If I ran it with just

    $ chmod +x snake.com
    $ ./snake.com
... then it would try to use Mono to launch it:

    Cannot open assembly './snake.com': File does not contain a valid CIL image.
But, running it explicitly with Bash works:

    $ bash snake.com
Pretty nifty but doesn't work out of the box on any Linux, at least :p Running Debian 13.
GlumWoodpecker··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
>- Linux comes in finite but vastly more combinations than OSX and Windows which means you are probably going to need to pick something like Ubuntu or struggle with the above

This is easily solvable by distributing the app via a distro agnostic mechanism, like as a Flatpak or AppImage. Using Flatpak also eliminates the need for rolling their own app update mechanism.

Surprised to find this on the front page today, I posted this four days ago (hovering over the post timestamp confirms this), yet the timestamp says "11 hours ago". Weird.

It is though, because no one is a victim in that transaction. Nobody lost anything and nobody suffered any loss of potential profit because they actively refused said profit.

The `Memory Pit` exploit for the Nintendo DSi works in a similar way - it exploits a buffer overflow in the reading of image meta data by the Nintendo DSi Camera application in order to achieve arbitrary code execution.

This can only ever be opt-in if you want to stay on the legal side of the GDPR (and equivalents in other jurisdictions). You can ask, but the default needs to be "no" if no answer is given.

I provide telemetry data to KDE, because they default to collecting none, and KDE is an open-source and transparent project that I'd like to help if I can. If I used your app, I would be likely to click yes, since it's open-source. Part of the problem I have with projects collecting user data is the dark patterns used or the illegal opt-out mechanism, which will make me decline sending telemetry every time, or even make me ditch it for an alternative. An app that asks:

    Can we collect some anonymized data in order to improve the app?
    [Yes] [No]
...with equal weight given to both options, is much more likely to have me click Yes if none of the buttons are big and blue whilst the other choice is in a smaller font and "tucked away" underneath the other (or worse, in a corner or hidden behind a sub-menu).

Plus, I would think that SOME data would be better than NO data, even if there's an inherent bias leaning towards privacy-minded/power users.

These websites still exist and are enjoyed by many! GameFAQs for example, hosts a large number of saves. Most recently I downloaded a complete save file for Micro Machines V3 for the PS2, so we didn't have to grind to unlock all cars for multiplayer :)
