Gigachad··on Is sandboxing sufficient to contain rogue agents?
Seems to me that the problem is that if you sandbox agents enough to be safe, they can't do anything useful. And when you give them the tools to be useful, they can go off the rails in ways you didn't expect.

I think safety has also taken a back step in modern dating. Previously you could ask around what a person was like and like you said, observe them passively. Now you are meeting a total stranger, you don't know anyone they know or anything about them.

An awful person gets to just reset their reputation every time, and in turn, people assume the worst by default.

I think this is just too finance brained and that the problem is not that everyone got too good for each other, but that everyone replaced in-person socialization with scrolling social media at home. So people simply do not bump in to each other to actually form relationships.

The nose dive in relationships kicked off when smartphones came in to society. I'm not sure the concept of dating apps is fixable. We need to get people out of the house again.

The implication that Western nations are different is fairly funny. I'd argue most of the governments in Asia are doing a lot more for the people than many Western governments.

I converted some Ruby stuff at a previous job to Rust pre-ai days and it was incredibly how much less memory they took and how fast it ran. But we still built everything else in Ruby because finding Rust devs was hard.

I am hopeful we can bring in an age of much more efficient software rather than fully prioritizing developer convenience.

Gigachad··on 10-year Treasury yield climbs above 5.3% to a level not seen in 24 years
We live in a sick society where billionaires can buy fleets of mega yachts and space ships but governments can't afford to keep functioning.

We have spent decades selling these billionaires government debt instead of just taxing them correctly.

IMO the largest problem is that there is an enormous amount of friction to go from getting a match on an app to actually meeting them in real life. Which means it just doesn't happen that often. What we need is physical spaces where people can meet in person for a low or zero cost. That eliminates the friction of actually seeing someone because they are already there in front of you.

After the current onslaught of 0 days on linux and other C projects combined with the new incredible ability to convert codebases to another language I think we will start to see this actually happen.

I'm not saying we blindly vibe convert Linux to Rust, but I think it could be a valid idea to start converting small parts and carefully auditing them.

One analogy I have heard is that distillation is like waterskiing, where the water skier seems to be moving at rapid pace and only just behind the boat, but that they aren't really expending any energy and if the boat slows down, so will they.

This seems to match what we are seeing where Chinese models from companies with only a tiny fraction of the compute are able to be hot on the heels of the frontier models.

Gigachad··on Backblaze drive stats for Q2 2026
I'm not doubting the usefulness of hard drives in general, just the ones above 20TB where it would take you most of a week to write to the drive. Hard drive fill times have been steadily going up to the point it becomes almost impractical to use these 30tb drives.

I guess if you have it all backed up in S3 it's fine, but if you put this thing in a NAS and one drive dies, your NAS is going to spend the whole week rebuilding where it's running at 100%, and another drive dying during this means data loss.

Gigachad··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
Letting you backup saves to a USB deprives Sony the ability to sell this to you as a subscription.

For minecraft I'd suggest just installing steamos on an old laptop or something and sticking it behind the TV. It's a much better experience than game consoles, you can just do whatever you want.

Gigachad··on Backblaze drive stats for Q2 2026
Something that's interested me is how hard drive capacities have continuously gone up, but read and write speeds have not really changed. To the point where it would take multiple days to read these new high capacity drives.

I wonder what the use case for them is, they aren't ideal for RAID as they would take far too long to rebuild the array in a drive failure, but they also aren't great for long term cold storage. Perhaps they are ideal for periodic backups where you want to take a daily 1TB backup of a server or CCTV where you don't really care about backing up the data as it's all deleted on schedule anyway.

Gigachad··on You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner
Not sure the kind of size you are talking about but you might be overestimating how much space it takes. My current rental has a back yard about the size of a single car garage and I’ve been able to host a ~50 person bbq with a mix of people standing inside and out.
Gigachad··on You are no longer invited to dinner
I think we also need to increase the friction of social media. But yeah, I used to live in the same apartment building as two friends so “hosting a dinner party” was as complex and sending a DM at 4pm to arrange something after work.

I would do this multiple times a week because it was so easy and required minimal coordination.

Gigachad··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
Do you have data for this? This contradicts common sense and every datapoint I’ve seen so far that isolation is a rapidly rising issue.
Gigachad··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
It really doesn’t take massive skill to invite your friends over. It doesn’t have to be this huge production.

And as for time, the average person finds time for hours of short form video and other useless tasks. Which is actually the real problem, social media has sucked up everyone’s time and attention to the point people don’t socialise anymore.

Gigachad··on The systems that no one will test
While that was never good, it’s still better than your data being completely leaked to the public.
Gigachad··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
Trump spoke about this publicly, promising he would "fill the reserves right up to the top", then when in power, didn't do that but instead started a war with Iran while the reserves were still low.

It's mind boggling how stupid it all is.

Gigachad··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
This already happened. Employees will go out of their way to bypass any restrictions to feed sensitive data in to the AI because it saves them time.

Bazzite has been the most hands off linux distro I've ever used. I put it on my desktop and I only use it with an xbox controller at the TV. I've never had to plug in a keyboard or use a terminal. I don't even bother checking proton compatibility anymore, everything has just worked.
Gigachad··on Self-Hosting on the Dark Web
Not really. The latency between a client and clearnet sites is tiny, and splitting assets in to separate resources makes caching work better.
Gigachad··on Replacing the old battery on rechargeable bike lights
I'd love to see an actual standard for user replaceable batteries. Raw lithium cells are just far too dangerous considering they can explode from being short circuited. So products have the choice of either non replaceable, or proprietary packs.

Given the EU is mandating replaceable batteries very soon we might see some momentum on this.

Gigachad··on Replacing the old battery on rechargeable bike lights
I think flashing makes more sense at day time or twilight where they aren't nearly as contrast with the background brightness. You get massively better battery life blinking than solid on. But of course nothing stops a incompetent user using flashing lights pointed upwards at night.
Gigachad··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
I remember when the concern was gpt2 could create fake news text. Now they can straight up create fake photo realistic images and are actively hacking government services yet we still haven’t pulled the plug.
Gigachad··on If we do not stop to help each other, what do we become?
I think that’s why Reddit and discord haven’t been harmed nearly as much. They have a reputation for being a lot kinder than stack overflow for basic questions. Meanwhile stack overflow was dead pretty much immediately after people got an alternative.
Gigachad··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
You've missed the original point. Someone can be working a job and realistically pulling their own weight, but the system we have distributes that money to the owners and investors, who then pay tax and give some part back to the worker through welfare.

The country is better off having this person even if they are receiving welfare. Of course that's not the situation for all people on welfare, but the idea that the top percent of earners are doing all the work while the majority of people sit around getting stuff for free is obviously untrue.

Gigachad··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
Isn’t this just a reflection of wealth inequality though? A “net negative” tax payer is just working a job that makes one of the net positive payers richer thus still bringing in more income for the country.
Gigachad··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
I don’t think this is agent specific. Rails is full of footguns that are virtually impossible to avoid even for a human developer.
Gigachad··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
> No one who owns a home wants to pay rent

They just want continually delivered services from the city funded by taking out increasing amounts of debt or selling off new land in a ponzi scheme to fund existing obligations.

Gigachad··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
I don't think this is why it won't get passed on. In theory the lowest income could leave the state and higher income renters would come in.

But in reality a land value tax incentivizes higher density housing. A single house and an apartment complex pay the exact same amount of tax, while the apartment building can split it up over many occupants. Land value taxes are a very natural hands off way of encouraging the right use of land, empty lots and car parks become unaffordable in highly desirable areas while apartments become relatively very cheap.

In theory the land value tax could be set so the overall taxation is the same as before, but but the distribution is such that the people with massive blocks of land in highly desirable areas foot most of the bill. This would over time make housing cheaper over time as more housing is built to reduce the tax burden.
