FundThrowaway··on Anxiety and burnout: why kids are consumed with worry
I find myself struggling with somewhat related situation, everything in my life is going good, happily married and a great job that I love however I find myself wanting to watch the world burn, I get excited about the prospect of war and the collapse of society. I keep it under wraps and don't mention it to anyone but I'm really not sure what's wrong with me.
FundThrowaway··on Ask HN: How old were the most talented software engineers you've met?
Junior developer salaries here are low enough that people just change industry. It's also not just about the salary but the way that they work. That all being said there are start ups out here that do look for experienced devs and pay accordingly, my previous comments mostly relate to large local businesses.
FundThrowaway··on Ask HN: How old were the most talented software engineers you've met?
I work out in Asia and over here a big reason for ageism in tech is a misunderstanding of development talent, there is a belief that coders are coders and that's all there is to it, young coders tend to be willing to work longer hours and basically work until they burn out so management sees them as the superior option since salaries and benefits are lower.

edit: Since I'm getting down voted for whatever reason here's an article that is along similar lines https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-05-02/china-s-t...

FundThrowaway··on The Worst Interface Ever: The Self-Destruct Switch (2004)
"Don't push buttons if you don't know what they do!"

That statement makes me a little sad, it's pretty much the exact opposite of the way I was brought up and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be where I am without the freedom of curiosity I was given at home. The general rule was if it's not going to kill me or maim me then I could have it.

FundThrowaway··on Gatwick Airport: Drone sightings cause delays
Greater Los Angeles - 87,490 km2 England - 130,279 km2

87,490 * 1.5 = 131,235

Pretty close if you ask me.

FundThrowaway··on After Journalist’s Alleged Murder, Tech Execs Distance Themselves from Saudis
An anti-corruption drive is nearly always just a power shift. Look at the various ones in China, it's never about corruption and more about one branch of the political elite taking out another.
FundThrowaway··on Drone Hobbyists Angered by Congress Ending the Aerial Wild West
Almost every time we have a BBQ or other outside event someone buzzes a drone overhead and just sits there watching us. Almost every time I go out hiking I hear the high pitched whine of a drone flying around the country park. It seems no matter where I go there is someone flying one. They are a total nuisance, create tons of noise pollution in areas that are usually quite tranquil, invade privacy and just annoy me all around to be honest.
FundThrowaway··on China’s all-seeing surveillance network
I'm pretty sure that's half of the point, stop any radicals from forming large followings.
FundThrowaway··on Twilight Of The Terminal: The Disruption Of Bloomberg L.P
This whole index funds outperform actively managed funds claim needs a lot more context. I always see adverts from people like Vanguard claiming such things but they are always just talking about raw returns they never take into account risk adjusted returns or the like. Not all returns are the same, you need to think about the risk taken to get those returns, a market neutral actively managed portfolio may return less than a passive fund but it's volatility will be much lower to.
FundThrowaway··on Twilight Of The Terminal: The Disruption Of Bloomberg L.P
Our Bloomberg usage these days is pretty much entirely the chat. I think the only other feature that gets regular use is the excel plugins.
FundThrowaway··on Voice Coder – Alexa skill to code by voice
It was a joke, relax.
FundThrowaway··on Voice Coder – Alexa skill to code by voice
I guess things have moved on from this Perl-Vista nightmare, I was personally looking forward to having all the coders around me screaming at their desktops in a fit of frustration and rage.

FundThrowaway··on Dark Motives and Elective Use of Brainteaser Interview Questions
That's pretty crazy, how do these people exist and get jobs? What kind of development were they supposed to be doing?
FundThrowaway··on Dark Motives and Elective Use of Brainteaser Interview Questions
> and there's more genuine fear of hiring someone who can't fizzbuzz.

I always hear this fear proclaimed but have never heard an actual story of a candidate failing to fizzbuzz, would love to hear an anecdote or two from anyone who has one.

FundThrowaway··on The use of "blacklist" is offensive
That's because it has nothing to do with skin colour and everything to do with the age old religious concept of light and darkness. However people will find a reason to get upset about anything so at this point it might as well be.
FundThrowaway··on The use of "blacklist" is offensive
Oh dear, what's next? Gender neutral electrical connectors?
FundThrowaway··on Ask HN: Codebase at my work is a complete mess, what should I do?
I'd say just double down and have a job for life, https://github.com/Droogans/unmaintainable-code
FundThrowaway··on Is China a developed country? A long and better answer
I always find the use of per capita GDP as measure of development as a rather strange measure of development. You could have a country with massive oil reserves or similar natural resource wealth that would have a very high per capita GDP but that doesn't necessarily mean that the average person sees any of it. I always thought a better figure is the median wealth per adult, perhaps I'm confused between quality of life and development.
FundThrowaway··on Ask HN: How to challenge trends without appearing like a luddite?
"There are many popular trends that I believe are not suitable for every situation"

Doesn't that statement apply to pretty much everything? Horses for courses and all that.

FundThrowaway··on Bitcoin’s Price Was Artificially Inflated Last Year, Researchers Say
One part of the article I really don't understand, "The researchers relied on the millions of transaction records that are captured on the public ledgers of all virtual currency transactions, known as the blockchain, to spot patterns." Why is he looking at the blockchain for trading irregularities? Nearly all of the big exchanges just use a database to record trades and no actual cryptocurrency is transferred around except at withdrawal and deposit, so how can the blockchain possibly provide any insight?
FundThrowaway··on How the gig economy is making life harder for North American workers
Do you have the scourge of zero hour contracts in the US? Basically a person can be contractually obligated to work when demanded but with no guarantees of minimum hours or salary.
FundThrowaway··on How the gig economy is making life harder for North American workers
Oh yeh me too, even when you use a similar app with taxis the service is awful. At least half the time they call you and cancel as they've just picked someone up on the way to you.
FundThrowaway··on How the gig economy is making life harder for North American workers
I wonder how much the true cost is to the driver, not only are they having to pay fuel costs but the more miles a car does the less it's worth. It's almost like swap deal, swapping the future value of your car in return for cash today.
FundThrowaway··on How the gig economy is making life harder for North American workers
Interestingly where I live Ubers are usually 50% more expensive than taxis.
FundThrowaway··on GitHub XP – GitHub Windows XP Theme
I wonder how kids today get away with texting in class, that was like the height of spy craft when you'd be texting a friend in your pocket while pretending to be writing notes on what the teacher was saying.
FundThrowaway··on Why We Disagree with The New York Times
On a similar to theme to the ever present facebook button, I wonder how much tracking Google is able to do through Google fonts, an absolute ton of sites use Google's CDN to deliver fonts to your browser.
FundThrowaway··on Ineffective Entrepreneurship: Post-Mortem of Hippo
Reminds of that article posted here a week or two ago about the jet set entrepreneur types, outsource all your work to the cheapest possible option while you sit on a beach drinking mojitos or more likely whine in a blog post about how your start up failed.
FundThrowaway··on Ask HN: Apple shutted down our 30k/mo business. What now?
Not really relevant as this is an example of when you can sign away your rights but I thought I'd just mention that it is impossible to sign away certain protected rights, no matter what a contract says.

A good example is a paid parking lot where it might say something along the lines of "by parking in this lot, you accept that 'parking company' is not liable for any theft, loss or damage of property." however if say a light fitting fell from the ceiling and damaged your car and you were able to prove negligence by the parking company then you may hold them liable for the damage.

Various companies try all kinds of unenforceable contract terms on the basis that the average Joe believes that he has to stick to whatever he agreed to. There was an amusing post on a legal blog where they went around NYC pointing out the hundreds of unenforceable contract terms that we are exposed to everyday.

FundThrowaway··on What technical recruiters want from engineering candidates
"'people with passion' will be less impacted by the unavoidable organizational BS"

Funnily enough I always find it that the people with passion are the ones that get themselves all worked up and distracted with the BS, the rest just keep on chugging (assuming it's not so bad that they quit).

FundThrowaway··on Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect?
Seneca's Dialogues, I can't recommend them enough
