How does this deal with rain?
FriedPickles··on I tricked Claude into leaking your deepest, darkest secrets
Interesting theory. The Claude Code instance says it's using this user agent based on the guidelines in the EDGAR Fair Access Policy: https://www.sec.gov/search-filings/edgar-search-assistance/a...

...which indeed requests that bots supply `User-Agent: Sample Company Name AdminContact@<sample company domain>.com`.

So in this case, the site just asked nicely and Claude Code complied. Note that this wouldn't have worked for Claude Chat, which the author was testing, because the `web_fetch` tool cannot set the User-Agent or other headers.

FriedPickles··on I tricked Claude into leaking your deepest, darkest secrets
I could see it right there in the tool call:

  Bash(curl -A "<my name> <my email>" "sec.gov...")
FriedPickles··on I tricked Claude into leaking your deepest, darkest secrets
Claude code decided to just put my name and email in the User-Agent when scraping docs from the SEC. No clever prompting required.

It’s not a terrible idea really, but I wish it would’ve asked me first.

FriedPickles··on Midjourney Medical
> ultrasound is not CT

They're using "CT" in its literal sense: tomography*, using computers. In this case, ultrasound is the penetrating wave rather than x-ray. It is of course a very different thing than what the medical world knows as "CT" today.

FriedPickles··on Can the stockmarket swallow Anthropic, SpaceX and OpenAI?
The money still comes from somewhere. In this case, those index funds will be forced to trim holdings of other companies. So it's cannibalizing other parts of the stock market.
FriedPickles··on Safer, cheaper vision correction without lasers or surgery
There are several errors here. When the eye ages, the lens stiffens, effectively decreasing the focal range. For nearsightdness, Lasik alters the cornea and moves the relaxed focal distance outward. It's possible that a nearsighted person wouldn't need reading glasses even as their focal range decreases, but would after Lasik.
FriedPickles··on FBI and DOJ Announce Operation Masquerade
I don't disagree about TP-Link's security reputation. But I think they're an independent Chinese company, not a Cisco brand.
FriedPickles··on MacBook Air with M5
I'll upgrade my M1 MBA when they do. I remember my Intel MBP running noticeably hotter when plugged in on one side vs the other, so maybe it's trickier than it seems.
FriedPickles··on iPhone Typos? It's Not Just You – The iOS Keyboard Is Broken [video]
Mostly I'm worried about bit rot, i.e. breaking changes in subsequent iOS updates. But your point is valid, I'll try Nintype again. It's extremely quirky and opinionated in an entertaining way.
FriedPickles··on iPhone Typos? It's Not Just You – The iOS Keyboard Is Broken [video]
> The best thing we can do is just report it via the feedback app and wait for a bug fix

iOS supports third party keyboards. Surely anybody this bothered by it should investigate those and pick a better option?

There was an absolutely mind-blowing keyboard which supported multi-finger swiping called Nintype, but development on it has stopped.

FriedPickles··on ChatGPT Atlas
Who is Avira and how'd they get OpenAI to ship their browser with 3 of their extensions preinstalled with full permissions?
FriedPickles··on Not paying with cash
Contactless Bitcoin lightning payments. Best of both worlds.
FriedPickles··on ' largest' fusion fuel facility to be built
The article discusses only the peaceful uses. But tritium must also be constantly replenished in the h-bomb arsenal due to its half life of ~12 years.
FriedPickles··on Adding iodine to salt played a role in cognitive improvements: research (2013)
Hmm, why don't they make iodized flaky salt?
FriedPickles··on Subpixel Snake [video]
If you're as dumb as me and try to actually play this, note that the "Snake speed" value is inverted.
FriedPickles··on About availability of TikTok and ByteDance Ltd. apps in the United States
Yes. Or visit TikTok.com in the browser, even if their region is set to US.
FriedPickles··on Toyota rethinks its bet on hydrogen
Drive a Toyota Mirai while you can–this might be the only time in history to experience the hilarious quirks of a hydrogen car. Including the "dump h2o" button, which causes the car to, um, eject its h2o waste on command. Oh and if you're in San Francisco, take a ride on the free hydrogen powered ferry "Sea Change" (its waste comes out of the drinking fountain).
FriedPickles··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
Calling these links 'magic' is an insult to magicians who spent years mastering actual sorcery. We're just passing around URL-encoded tokens.
FriedPickles··on NASA, Axiom Space Change Assembly Order of Commercial Space Station
I wonder if there's any useful heavy equipment aboard the ISS that could be transferred to the Axiom prior to separation and thus salvaged. It'd have to be stuff the ISS could do without for the remaining couple years of its life.
FriedPickles··on Plasticlist Report – Data on plastic chemicals in Bay Area foods
One thing I'd like to see tested: I have a theory that reusable plastic containers leach out most of their chemicals early in their life, so the amount imparted to any food diminishes with each use. Under this theory, I save and reuse old plastic containers for a long time, and avoid new ones (especially single use). Could this be true, or misguided?
FriedPickles··on Chocolate intake and risk of type 2 diabetes
Hopefully there will be a follow up RCT. I volunteer for the test group.
FriedPickles··on Voyager 1 Breaks Its Silence with NASA via Radio Transmitter Not Used Since 1981
> the basic technology for "much faster speed" doesn't exist.

…but we’re very close. The next technique will be flying near the sun then deploying a solar sail for a huge speed boost. Voyager goes 3 AU/yr, solar sail boost with todays technology will enable 7-9 AU/yr.

Highly recommend watching Slava Turyshev discuss his work on an SGL telescope, which employs this technique.

FriedPickles··on Standardizing Automotive Connectivity
> LVCS...is available in industry-standard light blue

Is this tongue-in-cheek, or is there a reason manufacturers care about the color?

FriedPickles··on Hacking Kia: Remotely controlling cars with just a license plate
Unlock via Bluetooth is perfectly viable without internet connection (unless you mean unlocking it for someone else?). Remote start and temp control should probably work from a few hundred feet away. If only phones had a longer range local radio, perhaps something like Zigbee. Maybe WiFi direct?
FriedPickles··on How to Make HTTPS Verifiable
This could replace oracles in some cryptocurrency systems. E.g. a betting market could pay out based on a game winner verified directly from the league's website.
FriedPickles··on Death Rates by Vehicle Model
Surprised to see electric cars on the list of lowest other driver deaths. I always thought their additional weight made them more dangerous to other drivers.
FriedPickles··on Gallery of Graffti Removals
Mutually assured job security. Reminds me of some experiences I've had going back and forth with an anti-bot team, as an anti-anti-bot team.
