FredrikMeyer··on San Francisco decriminalizes psychedelics
So silly, considering all the noise and accidents alcohol directly causes. But then a single bad case after someone taking psychedelics, and they reverse.
FredrikMeyer··on Lithuania evacuates its embassy in China
The Uigurs, for instance.
FredrikMeyer··on Ask HN: Best Alternative to Homebrew in 2021?
This seems to control whether to upgrade homebrew itself?
FredrikMeyer··on Why Clojure? (2018)
Yes, they got a lot better in Clojure 1.9.
FredrikMeyer··on L-System
Sort of. There are many fractals that are not described by L systems (whereas every application is written in code)
FredrikMeyer··on Chess tactics explained
My two favorites: John Bartholomew https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnBartholomewChess and Gotham Chess https://www.youtube.com/c/GothamChess/
FredrikMeyer··on A trip through the Graphics Pipeline (2011)
I've just started learning WebGL+Three.js. Does anyone know how similar this pipeline is to how it is done in a browser? (and how much of this is still true 9 years later?...)
FredrikMeyer··on GitHub Super Linter: one linter to rule them all
Many linters have built-in auto-fix features like what you describe. (eslint, for example)
FredrikMeyer··on Bangalore has 12M residents and only 385 Covid-19 cases
It is quite obvious that the reasons Sweden has > 3000 deaths and Norway has less than 300 is because of much less severe restrictions. Sweden has twice the population, but quite similar demographics.
FredrikMeyer··on The deepest ever sighting of an octopus, by cameras on the Indian Ocean floor
I read the book "Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness" last year. Very interesting book about octopi. https://www.amazon.com/Other-Minds-Octopus-Origins-Conscious...
FredrikMeyer··on Radical hydrogen-boron reactor leapfrogs current nuclear fusion tech?
I think they might be thinking of the corona of the sun

> The temperature in the corona is more than a million degrees, surprisingly much hotter than the temperature at the Sun's surface which is around 5,500° C

FredrikMeyer··on The Mark Zuckerberg Is a Lot Less Impressive Than the Movie Version
There's a missing "real" in the title of the submission: "The Mark Zuckerberg Is a Lot Less Impressive Than the Movie Version"

FredrikMeyer··on Re-writing the site of Norway's largest transport provider in Elm
Rail ticket prices are decided at the government level in Norway, so this should have quite a minimal effect on those.

Also, as learning Elm is quite fast - I don't think the vendor lock-in is a very convincing argument.

FredrikMeyer··on How social networks can be used to bias votes
There is an ongoing controversy in Norway right now, where a TV show during one month tried to manipulate the results of "school elections" (basically mocks of the real elections, where one votes for the real parties - the results are often used as an indicator for the real election results some weeks later).

The goal of the show was to show how election results can be manipulated, which created some outrage: some of the students are old enough to vote in the real elections, so they might have manipulated real results.

FredrikMeyer··on Wavelets (1994) [pdf]
The 2017 Abel Prize was awarded to Yves Meyer (no relation) for his contribution to the theory of wavelets. This is worth a read: https://www.quantamagazine.org/yves-meyer-wavelet-expert-win...
FredrikMeyer··on Vigenère Cipher
I recently read Simon Singhs book "The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography" [1]: it is very fun and readable about this (and many other) cipher.

FredrikMeyer··on Insect Apocalypse German Bug Watchers Sound Alarm
Off topic, but capitalizing words in titles in English really bothers me. Every word in the title are nouns, but some are here ment to be verbs. In German for example, only the nouns would have been capitalized, making the title much easier to read.
FredrikMeyer··on “A Horrifically Bad Idea”: Smartphone Voting Is Coming
In Norway we can prevote several weeks before the election. Result is more people voting and shorter voting lines on voting day.
FredrikMeyer··on Tricks That Can Outsmart Deepfake Videos for Now
If one wants the content of this article in podcast format, the researcher was interviewed in one of the latest episodes of Data Skeptic (an excellent pod cast, by the way): https://dataskeptic.com/blog/episodes/2018/deepfakes
FredrikMeyer··on Ask HN: What are some of the tech blogs you follow regularly?
John D Cook: https://www.johndcook.com/blog/

His posts are short and to the point, often about experiments in numerical mathematics.

FredrikMeyer··on “The Riemann Hypothesis” by Michael Atiyah – Preprint
I haven't watched the Abel lecture yet. What is it that you find bizarre?
FredrikMeyer··on Everest: A lightweight REST API client written in JavaFX
Very short feedback: it looks very nice (startup time was fast on my Mac). However, some of the usual Mac hotkeys in text fields didn't work. In (for example) the Chrome URL field I can press ctrl+a to go to the beginning of the URL (in this case I forgot to write http://). Didn't work.

FredrikMeyer··on Show HN: Algebraic Number Theory in Python 3
Nice! Even though this is implemented before, it is easy to read (and if you only need simple functions, downloading Sage is a bit of a overkill (there is an online version of Sage which I used a lot during my PhD though!)).

I like seeing simple implementations of things like this - inspiring for others thinking of similar things!

FredrikMeyer··on Show HN: Bato – A Filipino Programming Language
I agree that the would already should have had a lingua franca, but I must say that it English is far from the best candidate. The language is huge, and the grammar is full of irregularities. Pronunciation must be learnt case by case (why are "women" pronounced "wee-men"?).

(also recall this cute poem: http://www.ling.upenn.edu/~beatrice/humor/english-lesson.htm... )

FredrikMeyer··on Norwegian Student Takes Secret Street Photos In The 1890s
His grandson is actually a mathematics professor at my university: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erling_St%C3%B8rmer Really funny and amicable guy.
FredrikMeyer··on Project Euler
It is possible to sort them by difficulty. Some of the newer problems are easier than some of the first 100 problems, appearantly.
