FredrikMeyer··on Coursera and Udemy are now one company
I checked now, and it says "Enroll for free". Am I missing something?
FredrikMeyer··on Training my smartwatch to track intelligence
I really wish Garmin had an official API that can be used by their users instead of the reverse-engineered solutions (although they're very good), but they're at the mercy of Garmin.

FredrikMeyer··on Beautiful Abelian Sandpiles
I implemented this in Rust some years back. It is connected to some serious research mathematics (see f.ex https://www.ams.org/notices/201008/rtx100800976p.pdf)

FredrikMeyer··on What I Self Host
Thanks for the tip! I run these things mostly for fun - the Spotify stats thing isn't super useful, but it is fun to look at how my listening habits have changed over the years.

It slightly more than just an API though: one can't aggregate directly from the Spotify API.

FredrikMeyer··on Show HN: Newcomer Ranking – Alternative to GitHub Trending for New Repos
One of the projects listed for me was a Clojure project that hasn't been updated for 3 years.

FredrikMeyer··on Show HN: Improving search ranking with chess Elo scores
Came to comment this. As a consequence, writing it in capital letters "ELO" is wrong.
FredrikMeyer··on A binary tree of all Pythagorean triples
Learned something new today. For other interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagorean_triple#Generating_...
FredrikMeyer··on Fractal Geometry
There are many fractals and variations of them. The Mandelbrot is definitely famous, but it is hard to say if it is "the best". Look for example at this strange creature: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Ship_fractal
FredrikMeyer··on Try Clojure
I use Emacs with Cider+clojure-lsp, and the autocomplete/refactoring tools are super good.
FredrikMeyer··on Estimating Pi with Kafka streams
The FractionAggregator class has two fields (int trues, int total), and it is up to Kafka to keep track of the accumulated number. (perhaps someone who knows Kafka better could elaborate on how Kafka stores work "under the hood")
FredrikMeyer··on Jolie, the service-oriented programming language
I assume this language is named after Jolie in Avatar The Last Airbender? (https://avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Zhu_Li_Moon - the pronunciation is the same)
FredrikMeyer··on Implementing a 2d-Tree in Clojure
I updated my equiv implementation after comments from a Reddit user: https://github.com/FredrikMeyer/generert/commit/22fc333820ed...
FredrikMeyer··on Implementing a 2d-Tree in Clojure
Thank you! I will check out how that looks. I thought the picture was a bit big, but I will experiment a bit!
FredrikMeyer··on Implementing a 2d-Tree in Clojure
What I learned implementing a 2d tree in Clojure (and its implementation)..
FredrikMeyer··on Programming Beyond Paradigms
Classic counter-answer: Javascript: f(x). Lisp: (f x).

Javascript: f(g(x)) Lisp: (f (g x))

Same amount of parens.

FredrikMeyer··on Instinctive Sleeping and Resting Postures (2000)
I find this article quite insubstantial. He lists alternative sleeping positions, but no sources backing up the claim that "western sleeping positions" (whatever that is) are worse.

Also only one citation, and that is to back up the claim that there are 200 primates.

Nice pictures though - I feel happy that I can sit (relatively) comfortably in the squatting position (as an European).

FredrikMeyer··on The boundary of neural network trainability is fractal
Related: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39349992 (seems to be the same content)
FredrikMeyer··on How I set up my new MacBook
Open for suggestions/criticisms.
FredrikMeyer··on Ruff v0.1.0
I read this comment on the train to work today. First thing that happened at work was that somebody had disabled the linting stage because of exactly this error.

(of course I should have pinned versions...)

FredrikMeyer··on Being a bash developer in the 21st century (2021)
Emacs' flycheck integrates perfectly with shellcheck.
FredrikMeyer··on Modular forms, the ‘fifth fundamental operation’ of math
Very much related. I recently stumbled upon this excellent YouTube channel in which he explains modular forms https://www.youtube.com/@PeakMathLandscape/videos
FredrikMeyer··on jq 1.7
My way of using ChatGPT is just to ask it to give me some complicated sed/awk command, and then I can usually understand easily if the command is correct, or easily look it up. So it is very good for learning.
FredrikMeyer··on Emacs Bedrock: A minimal Emacs starter kit
I use tide-mode for Typescript/TSX and it works perfectly. All it needs is a package.json file to find the ts server.
FredrikMeyer··on Haskell mini-patterns handbook (2020)
Posted a few days ago :) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37350422
FredrikMeyer··on The ReMarkable Streaming Tool v2: Elevating Remote Work Efficiency
You can make your HTML canvas rendering faster by using typed arrays as described here https://hacks.mozilla.org/2011/12/faster-canvas-pixel-manipu...
FredrikMeyer··on Why your blog still needs RSS
I’m vert happy with miniflux. I have run it in a Docker container on Digital Ocean for a few years.
FredrikMeyer··on Writing Python like it's Rust
One of the less talked about effects of type hinting in Python is that editor integration gets a lot better. Better autocomplete is a great help.
FredrikMeyer··on WebGPU Error Handling best practices
I often check this by opening developer tools, look in the code, and and search for "rss", "atom.xml" or similar things within the <head> tags.
FredrikMeyer··on FOSDEM 2023: Glad to Be Back
This seems a bit too simple. Representation does matter. It is not a comment about the gender/skin color of a particular speaker, but try to imagine being a young woman (or a colored person, or a trans person, or a feminine gay person, ...) entering the world of programmer conferences. It might be hard to feel included if everyone else is "different" than you.
