Fizzadar··on In a Car-Culture Clash, It’s the Los Angeles Police vs. Pedestrians
This is very rare in the UK, everyone's pretty good at looking left & right (although many will run/jog rather than wait). I guess this is more an education problem. To be frank if you're stupid enough not to look then you deserve to be hit (of course that attitude won't work in reality as often the driver/car will be at fault by default - certainly in the UK).

Perhaps the best approach would be to not punish 'safe' jaywalking but to give out harsh tickets for those that cause cars to slam the brakes/similar.

Fizzadar··on In a Car-Culture Clash, It’s the Los Angeles Police vs. Pedestrians
As a Brit living in London the whole idea of 'jaywalking' is hilarious. It's totally ridiculous to force pedestrians to always use lights & pelican crossings. Assuming everyone has a bit of common sense (don't walk in front of a moving car) I can think of absolutely no reason why these ridiculous laws even exist. A huge number of hours are saved in London every day by everyone not having to wait for a green man.

And a $197 fine?! WTF? Glad I'm not living in LA, I could rack up thousands of dollars in a few hours if walking as one does in London.

Fizzadar··on Neuroon: Sleep mask for polyphasic sleep
"NeuroOn has technology that lets you induce lucid dreaming, whenever you want" - polyphasic sleep is pretty interesting, but this is what does it for me... IF it's possible.
Fizzadar··on Git 2.0 changes push default to ‘simple’
Noticed this message the other day - about time! IMO this should have always been the default Git push behaviour.
Fizzadar··on Patent war goes nuclear: Microsoft, Apple-owned “Rockstar” sues Google
It's such a sad sight to see companies pour billions into damaging each other (and themselves) rather than innovating and creating new things.
Fizzadar··on Devops Horror Stories
You can hardly be surprised when OVH or Hetzner go down, just consider the price. Putting every server in one location is just stupid... as always the best way to fight downtimes is to spread servers across multiple providers & DC's.
Fizzadar··on Tessel: The end of web development as we know it
All I hope is that you can write code in Lua directly, rather than the far inferior JavaScript.
Fizzadar··on Left with Nothing
And this is what happens when you privatise the tax man.
Fizzadar··on [dead]
Clearly Americans want different content to the rest of the world. That or TIME believes they do. Or, perhaps the US version is written independently of the rest of the world's, which is written as one?
Fizzadar··on ‘Fuck’ in Linux Kernel
I just copied the original title, which I couldn't directly link as it's [dead] on arrival: http://lowendtalk.com/discussion/13071/f-ck-in-linux-kernel

Agreed! I did a quick scan for sh!t: http://pastie.org/pastes/8285970/text & bloody: http://pastie.org/pastes/8285976/text

There's also LOADS of 'crap's in the code.

Fizzadar··on What happens when you sit at a desk for 13 years and also exercise
Couldn't agree more with the standing desks - no doubt they bring some improvement, but they do seem more like the 'in-thing' and 'hip' rather than genuinely life changing. As it always has been, regular (even if short) exercise sessions are a key part in healthy living.
Fizzadar··on U.S. Expats Balk at Tax Law: American Citizen Renunciations Are Soaring
To be expected really when the IRS seems to think that, even if you live outside the US for a full tax-year, you are taxable as a US citizen just because you hold a passport/green card.

It was a long time dream/plan of mine to try get sponsored and on to the green card system (because I think the US is a beautiful country - and I would love to live there for multiple years) until I discovered these taxation laws.

Fizzadar··on RocketCloud - Like DigitalOcean but outside US legal jurisdiction
I wouldn't be so sure - if anything the UK is more monitored by our own agencies than the NSA monitoring America. We just don't know about it so much. I guess the only difference is the lack of 'backdoors', but I highly doubt Digital Ocean has such a 'backdoor' as well.

Assuming this is the case it is likely both services will be under as much surveillance as each other.

Fizzadar··on Why the war on drugs has been made redundant
Despite the fact that legalisation would not only make drugs safer while simultaneously cutting funding to organised crime (lets not forget the tax revenue as well) the UK Gov still believes prohibition is the key. I'd love to see them give a detailed reason as to why alcohol is legal while cannabis is not - it's pretty damn obvious which is 'healthier'.
Fizzadar··on Fifty Shades of Grey Would Be Banned in UK?
Cameron was looking good until recently with his crackdown (however slight) on our disgraceful benefit system. And now he looks to censor the population under the guise of protecting children (teaching them how to protect themselves is probably a better option). This country is rapidly going downhill as our freedoms are slowly reduced.

That said, an opt-in porn filter for parents is always going to be a good/useful thing. But we all know any determined individual (and I'd suspect many young-ish people) will bypass these blockades in no time at all, just as we have with Kickass/TPB.

Fizzadar··on U.S. Government Fears End of Megaupload Case
"Among other things the Government claimed that federal rules shouldn’t be interpreted so narrowly" - does that give the public the ability to 'interpret' laws as they feel they should be applied, rather than as they are written? Shocking moves from the US Govt, desperately hoping the case is dismissed.

And this gem "When a person located abroad violates the laws of the United States, that person may be held criminally liable despite the fact that the person has never set foot in the United States." - US != world police.

Fizzadar··on Show HN: Pokemon in Javascript [WIP]
I've wanted to build such a game for ages and have done (not very well) in the past (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpM-wKLTKSI), this version is designed to run in single player, but also to be able to connect to a Node server to enable multiplayer (currently only map/chat works, but PvP is the idea). The multiplayer is half-implemented currently, if you select 'connect to server' on the bottom right menu and use host pkrusset.com with port 9030 it should connect up (return to chat).

Fizzadar··on SimCity’s first post-release DLC is a Nissan ad
Wouldn't expect anything less from EA!
Fizzadar··on Taxi industry lawsuit against Uber transferred from state to US court
I find it so depressing that traditional taxi company's wish to stifle inovation (which, as far as I can tell, is much loved), simply because they have failed to innovate themselves. IMO this is similar to the music industry and hollywood, where companies are 'stuck in their ways' and will desperately try to keep the status quo at the expense of the consumer. Where's the love?.

Fizzadar··on If PHP were British
Love it, if only PHP were like this. My favorite is definitely the catch block, sorry, would_you_mind block!
Fizzadar··on What happens when the Secret Service uses a NSL on you
I'm glad I live in the UK/Europe where privacy (certainly of physical post and my local network, plus the various services I use around Europe). Shame my Gmail is firmly under the US authorities.

It makes me sad to see the authorities of countries like the US using entrapment and other dodgy tactics to catch criminals. The US is soon to become like 1984 with drones monitoring people in cities, huge cloud computers monitoring all internet traffic, and feds running lawless tapping everyone's phones.

Fizzadar··on Lua vs Node vs LuaNginx
No http protocol as in it'll just be socket based.

The Lua servers didn't crash; requests via browser worked fine during/after the benchmark. I'm not sure why ab kept hanging.

Fizzadar··on Lua vs Node vs LuaNginx
Sounds quite likely the same thing is happening to Lua.

The tests were made on a Micro VPS from Afterburst.com (which I own), on an empty/not-yet-deployed node.

Fizzadar··on GoDaddy deletes my domains and charges me to restore them
Godaddy are one of the most incompetent companies I've ever had the misery of dealing with. Their web interface, customer service and general customer experience are all awful.

I've always moved my domains away as soon as possible (I've only never had domains with them when purchased from another member).

Fizzadar··on Do Not Type "File:///" in OS X
Spotlight, Finder, Chrome & Activity Monitor all crash; Terminal, Firefox & Sparrow are fine...
Fizzadar··on Gift HN: Have 200+ great domain names. Free.
Just got upeat.com, usehq.com & aloneship.com, thanks!
Fizzadar··on Any HN readers have ideas for improving gun safety?
Remove/ban them entirely from public use in-line with most of the civilised world. Regular people don't need guns.
