Ferret7446··on VTubing: How a Japanese Phenomenon Is Going Worldwide
No one wants a free model. (Yes there are exceptions). The big game changer is GenAI. The cost to start vtubing now with a unique model is very low.
Ferret7446··on Flock Credibility Lost as It Repeatedly Lies to City Councils, Police, & Public
That's like saying you can't have a high trust society if you have locks on the doors. In other words it's preposterously wrong.

You can both have a high trust society and have public cameras for when something happens. The locks and the cameras keep honest people honest.

Ferret7446··on I wrote an bash enumerator because I was sick of xargs
Do you really equate a one time request to cite something if you use it in an academic paper with begging? I know they say that users of open source software are entitled, but this seems rather extreme.
Ferret7446··on I wrote an bash enumerator because I was sick of xargs
Are you using the wrong parallel? Moreutils unfortunately ships a (IMO much worse) parallel
Ferret7446··on I Stopped “Creating Content”
That's a bit too cynical and missing the point. "Content" is what people want. You create what people want.

> You should be writing essays, recording tutorials, training, music, conversations, etc. the kind of things you care about, for an audience whose attention you don’t take for granted, hoping that they too will care at least a little. If they do, they will pay you because they will rather part with money than part with your work.

Yeah, that's called content. "the kind of things you care about, for an audience whose attention you don’t take for granted, hoping that they too will care at least a little" doesn't quite roll off the tongue.

Ferret7446··on The Voice of Google
It's the age old topic of whether people would rather pay for a product or get ads. Everyone says they'll pay, but like an addict that says they'll quit, they all opt for the ads
Ferret7446··on Shinjuku Station in 3D
As far as I remember Tokyo stations are all easy to navigate if you use Google maps. You get a letter for the exit, and you just follow the signs
Ferret7446··on Perforce charges $500 for training training videos.. and it's AI narrated
From what I understand, it's a tooling problem and not a technical issue with Git. By default Git only supports text diffs but that is not a fundamental constraint of the architecture. Actually Git deals with binary blobs and the diffs are a UI porcelain layer. Binary diffs could be added on top with just a SMOP
Ferret7446··on Goodbye, and Thanks for All the Bikesheds
I'd like to know where you're getting these decisions. All of my hard decisions are due to not knowing what technical obstacles we'll run into later.
Ferret7446··on If You Build It, They Will Come
Part of it has to do with having children. If you have kids, you have a stake in the future. The birth rate has been falling, so naturally civic duty has also fallen.
Ferret7446··on A grumpy screed about AI in software engineering
The demand sets the market. There simply isn't enough demand at that price.

Even though the concept of doing what you love has only really existed for a few decades, a lot of people take it for granted. That's just how fast humans get used to things, and AI is no different. It takes a decade or two for a new generation to grow up with the new normal, and then it's just waiting a few generations for the old farts to die off.

Ferret7446··on Show HN: On-chain bond market where the issuers are AI agents
The obvious answer is that the agent uses the money to pay for its own compute. The ones that run out, well...
Ferret7446··on Three ways people respond to a problem (other than solving it)
Quite a few are homeless by choice. There are shelters available but they choose not to go because the shelters ban drugs. So they choose drugs over shelter.
Ferret7446··on Three ways people respond to a problem (other than solving it)
It's just an incentive problem. If the people in the government would get fired or lose their personal income if they did not deliver results, then they would be effective like you wouldn't believe.

As it is, they're spending other people's money on other people's problems with effectively no accountability.

Ferret7446··on Detecting LLM-Generated Texts with “Classical” Machine Learning
There has to be a signal to detect it.

Take this sentence: Bob went to the store to buy milk.

Was that AI generated or not? There simply isn't a signal there. The problem isn't noise, the problem is, is there even a signal to begin with.

Sure, you might be able to recognize the quirks of a specific LLM just as you recognize the quirks of a particular person, but as the number of LLMs proliferate, then the signal turns into noise. (The signal isn't buried by noise, it becomes noise. The signal no longer has any discriminating power.)

Ferret7446··on A Beautiful Theory Falls to Ugly Data
This still applies to "non durable" goods. Food is worth more today than it is next year, not least of which because if you starve, you won't get a chance to eat it next year. All goods are worth more sooner than later (relative to when they are needed), which is why people pay a premium for faster delivery.
Ferret7446··on In defense of not understanding your codebase
Well, that's why clean, well documented code is (was?) so important, because even if it's your code, you will forget and have to read it later.
Ferret7446··on The Anti-Mac User Interface (1996)
This was always the holy grail, we just were never able to achieve this practically.

For example see the early Zork style games, or declarative style languages like SQL. It turns out that it's very tricky to get computers to "understand" language like humans do, and approximating it with pre-defined grammar and vocabulary is not enough.

Ferret7446··on New York becomes the first state to impose a data center moratorium
> We don’t actually have to be moving at breakneck speeds

There are a lot of bankrupt companies and fallen nations that believed this. Complacency will hurt you, but only when you realize it too late.

Ferret7446··on The infinite scroll may become endangered if controversial Calif. law passes
No it's not stable. You also need the query/filter, and a snapshot of the state of all posts at the exact moment you want to grab the link, since posts can be created/deleted/changed. That's also assuming that your anchor still exists and wasn't deleted or changed.

The only stable way to share what you're seeing is with a screenshot.

Ferret7446··on DOGE is done. What happened to its records?
This was discussed pretty widely back when this all started. Creating a new department has a ton of overhead (government inefficiency) so they wanted to sidestep the process. The common narrative is that Trump didn't get anything done in his first term because he was hamstrung by all of the bureaucracy, hence why he is aggressively "shortcircuiting" things now, e.g. through executive orders.
Ferret7446··on Command Line Interface Guidelines
Unfortunately not all programs respect an empty PAGER vs an unset PAGER. It's more reliable to use PAGER=cat
Ferret7446··on How the FSF sysadmins block botnets with reaction
FSF is not political in the sense that they won't forbid you to use their software or otherwise blacklist you even if you are against free software, or if you're far left or far right. They are only political in the sense that they have a goal. If that's how you define "political" then the word is somewhat meaningless.

They won't take contributions not aligned with their goals but won't block you from sharing your contributions in the spirit of free software.

Ferret7446··on How the FSF sysadmins block botnets with reaction
Only insofar as political neutrality is interpreted by the modern polarized political factions as a political stance.

The GPL "tolerates" conflicting political opinions, which used to be closer to the norm and thus not political.

Ferret7446··on The console wars have been lost
I wonder how much of that is due to exclusivity. If Nintendo games were available on PC I expect Switch sales to drop significantly.
Ferret7446··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
Agreed, I find comments whining about AI slop to be far less valuable than the supposed AI slop, and I wonder if the commenters are aware of the irony, or perhaps those comments are also AI slop themselves.
Ferret7446··on Since Chromium 148, Math.tanh is now fingerprintable to link underlying OS
There is actually/obviously. It lets you identify bugs in well meaning clients. e.g. you can identify if IE v1.2.3 isn't handling form submissions correctly. It lets you serve content that works for clients with known issues or limitations.
Ferret7446··on Ghostel.el: Terminal emulator powered by libghostty
Downloading a compiled module is a huge negative in the age of supply chain attacks; you're begging to get compromised.
Ferret7446··on The Chinese Voice Actor Forced to Prove He's Human
What you preach makes no difference. Anyone who listens to you will go extinct to the people who don't.

If preaching worked there would be no more violent crime or war.

Ferret7446··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
Money represents a social IOU. The more money you have, the more value you have provided to society and thus you hold IOUs for which society will pay you back in the future.

That's why it's silly to hold a lot of cash, it means you've been suckered by society. That's also why holding (certain kinds of) debt is smart; you want a net positive relationship with society, in terms of pure personal gain.
