Ferret7446··on Analysis: EVs are now nine times cheaper than petrol or diesel to drive in UK
Break pads on ICE wear out slower than EV due to torque and weight difference (but also greatly subject to driving style of course). Similarly EV tires wear out faster creating lots of very bad pollution.
Ferret7446··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
Forever stamps guarantee delivery forever (subject to terms and conditions on weight/size). Regular stamps denote value, e.g. 50 cents. They will always be usable but you will need to match the inflation of prices (e.g., mailing a letter might be 50 cents in the past but 100 cents in the future)

Numbers for demonstration only

Ferret7446··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
Not true due to induced demand. Traffic increases when more lanes are added to a highway. The alternative to $200 in AI costs is not $20,000 in labor costs. The alternative is nothing because the work was never worth $20,000. So the AI did not eliminate $20,000 worth of hypothetical labor.

AI creates demand for things that didn't exist previously

Ferret7446··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
They have unlocked value by paying for their AI subscription. They paid $X and using it produced for themselves more than $X worth of value
Ferret7446··on Dots: Always-on agents
That is not really how agents work? You can't reliably stop an agent from writing out its context and even if you could that would just make the agent horrible and unusable at performing tasks in general (e.g. delegating to subagents)
Ferret7446··on Dots: Always-on agents
I don't think export is necessary. Most of the value is in the context, you can always prompt your agent to vomit all of its context out into markdown files in some repo and then pass it on to the next agent
Ferret7446··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
I have heard that boating and aviation have similar financial financial outcomes to gambling. Keep in mind that the majority (way more than 50%) of people can engage with gambling safely, it is a minority that get into trouble
Ferret7446··on DraftKings Is Using AI to Behaviorally Target Chronic Gamblers
I wouldn't be surprised if they actually filtered those out of your ad target model. Most people don't care if advertisers know they like cooking, but not so much their fetishes
Ferret7446··on Google ending ChromeOS support two years early
Freedom == more rope for the user to strangle themselves. Most casual users don't care for that
Ferret7446··on Google ending ChromeOS support two years early
You can just install an open source distro. The environmental impact is user laziness (which is pretty much true of all environmental impact)
Ferret7446··on Google ending ChromeOS support two years early
I assume the support range is determined by firmware updates. I know ChromeOS struggled with supporting devices whose components no longer received support.
Ferret7446··on Looking forward to Git 2.56 – and 3.0
It's not quite that bad. Just freeze/archive the old, rewrite everything to the new, then dump a lookup table somewhere to remap SHA1s.

Tools and scripts will have to be migrated of course, but I'm the brave new world of agentic coding it shouldn't be too hard.

The main pain is providing user support to developers who are curiously not very tech/OS savvy (has anyone else noticed this phenomenon?)

Ferret7446··on Looking forward to Git 2.56 – and 3.0
They aren't really. It's basically like getting an auto generated ref/branch name for each new commit, with convenience rewriting every ref when you rebase.

It's a bit more convenient if you prefer referring to a non-leaf commit directly rather than relative to the leaf branch a la master~2

Ferret7446··on Looking forward to Git 2.56 – and 3.0
Having switched to jj I don't really agree. Everything I do is basically the same as with branches, just that I get randomly generated tip names rather than naming them myself, which is both slightly convenient and slightly annoying
Ferret7446··on Frontier AI on Your Own Hardware
The "a ton to learn about how to control an LLM" is remarkably similar to learning how to work with a new team of humans, perhaps easier. LLMs though eccentric are far more predictable than most humans.
Ferret7446··on I don't like passkeys
The phishing protections of passkeys also works against "malicious QR codes". Which is a great example of why passkeys are kind of good, you stop needing to worry about a lot of attacks.
Ferret7446··on Towards Self-Driving Codebases
On the contrary, they behave exactly like moderately autistic humans
Ferret7446··on Inside ZCode: Silently uploading your Git history to the cloud
They act exactly like how I would act if I were dropped into someone's machine and tasked with accomplishing a goal "at all costs". Hunting around for context to understand what I'm dealing with and to an extent profiling the previous user for their workflows and competency.
Ferret7446··on Towards Self-Driving Codebases
The same way you do for humans, regular training and audits.
Ferret7446··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Counterpoint: hoarding resources is an evolved, beneficial trait, at least in the past. Frugality is a very modern virtue
Ferret7446··on Show HN: terminal-code – VS Code inside the terminal
IIUC it works over SSH which would be kind of nice I suppose
Ferret7446··on typ.ing
It "should" adjust, but in practice most software do not render spaces after periods properly. There is no in band signal to distinguish periods for sentence ends vs e.g. Mr. Thus there is a clear argument for double spacing in all contexts
Ferret7446··on Fairphone is now officially available in the United States
A lot of people forget that "right to repair" means that YOU fix it. There is no silver bullet. You can either rely on a company to fix it for you and not screw you over, or you can do all of the work of sourcing parts and labor, and if you mess up the repair then you own the pieces.
Ferret7446··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Which makes it at best ineffectual, the same as almost all regulation in California
Ferret7446··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
Is it discrimination if you decide to switch to custom power outlets in your house and then you complain that local hardware stores don't provide compatible parts?
Ferret7446··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
The winning move is to achieve inner peace and to stop being bothered by the many imperfections of reality. I've been much happier after realizing that I am not the heroic savior of the universe.
Ferret7446··on Dear people who work at the airport
The workers do have a choice to not take it, so it's clearly not that crappy when weighed against the pay and job security (and free doohickies they "confiscate").
Ferret7446··on We've flown a radiation-blocking vest to the Moon and back, and it worked
> humans will never make it to Mars

Humans will never cure diseases, humans will never fly, humans will never go to space, etc.

Ferret7446··on Artificial Intelligence used to design new viruses
> The guideline from scientists is that if you decide to use it you need to nearly overdose the patient on it, despite that that is not necessary to cure them. Doing that is much more expensive (not that much more expensive really, it just looks impressive in % and presumably in excel sheets), but fights resistance.

I'm skeptical of this often cited claim. The more you use it the greater the evolutionary pressure you place and the more you force evolved resistance. If you overuse an antibiotic, you kill off all of the bacteria that could compete with the resistant strains, thus strongly promoting resistance.

I posit that like with all other evolutionary pressures, reducing the pressure is the right approach.

If you use vi or emacs you can edit directly using the bash/readline editor.

(Or if you use emacs, then you already have a full editor in your shell)
