Ferret7446··on Study uncovers lost 'golden age' of languages
I don't suppose the age ended with a particular tower falling down?
Ferret7446··on GitHub is the wrong shape for this new world
> GitHub takes git and basically turns it back into subversion and co. Instead of all that anarchic "no repo is king" long haired hippie nonsense, you want central control 8) I do too but only within my company, so we use gitea (other git control freak enablement platforms are available).

I don't know how you got to this. GitHub was designed fundamentally for the decentralized world. That's why forking is so easy, it was designed so that everyone can fork a repo and merge between themselves.

That's why GitHub has the vulnerability where if you have a private fork of a public repo, all of your commits are also public (because the internals was designed for an open social coding world)

Ferret7446··on Note-Taking and Personal Knowledge Management
They are absolutely not the same. e.g. the Cornell method is for learning.

> Do you mean the idea that hand movements of writing help retention?

It's not just that, but also mentally engaging with the material.

The former is, e.g., writing down how you got some software working on your machine so you can reference it in a few years.

Ferret7446··on Note-Taking and Personal Knowledge Management
These discussions always conflate the different types of "notes".

Broadly, there are two very different kind of notes. First, there are notes whose purpose is to be easy to find when you need to recall some bit of information. Then, there is note taking in service of learning.

These two are very different in goals and thus very different in terms of optimal strategy.

Also, there is note taking in service of creation, where the end goal is neither recall nor learning, but to create notes to share to other people, often for artistic purposes but potentially also for reference or learning. These are also different from note taking for personal reference or learning.

Ferret7446··on Rear center fuel tank adds roughly 20k liters and extends range by 1k NM
Semi-tangential, but this is why free markets are much more efficient than armchair experts.

Armchair experts won't correctly estimate all of these incidental costs nor the value of the saved time and overhead for everyone involved.

Ferret7446··on Underwater oxygen loss threatens earth's stability, researchers warn
It's not possible for us to work together and fix it, since most of the problem is coming from China, like with most pollution in general. Unless you're proposing something like nuking China.
Ferret7446··on Delayed Gratification – Proud to Be 'Last to Breaking News'
Mainstream media effectively lets you control the people. Being able to control how people vote is worth a lot of money.
Ferret7446··on Why a $154B CEO just endorsed stripping most Americans of voting rights
> which is why it's considered a very good idea to let women

There's some revisionism going on here. Women did not want to vote. It was the feminism/communism movement that brought on women suffrage. Had the USSR not succeeded in planting this, we likely wouldn't have ever gotten it.

Ferret7446··on Why a $154B CEO just endorsed stripping most Americans of voting rights
Is it not a bad thing in the general case? People who produce net positive value for society subsidize the unsustainable reproduction of those who are a net drain. It is a very sterile perspective, but reality doesn't care about empathy, and you can't feed people with good feelings.
Ferret7446··on What Even Are Microservices?
Human boundaries are technical boundaries. If you're building for humans, then human limitations are part of the technical requirements.

e.g., there's a reason that fancy buildings have maintenance hatches for humans

Ferret7446··on Why do we think we understand the world more than we actually do?
Let's not kid ourselves, this is 100% due to mainstream media bias. Well, maybe not 100%, let's say 90%
Ferret7446··on DConf 2026 in London
I came in here wondering why a config database is in London. It's quite unfortunate to name your conference after a much more popular, or at least widely used software (try searching dconf in a non personalized search engine)
Ferret7446··on Bitcoin trail, Google cookies and Uber Eats orders help tie man to Steam malware
The vast majority of "gamers" play on a phone. Would you consider something like Neverness to Everness to be "very basic"? Times have changed
Ferret7446··on The old-school way of keeping the summer heat out of your home
Fun fact, air conditioning was invented for lowering humidity in warehouses, hence why it is called air conditioning and not air cooling.
Ferret7446··on My current strategy is to not read any of the code written by my agents
Your compiler can't prove null doesn't exist if you have unsafe, and you end up being better off having tested in the first place. And how do you know your compiler is even functioning correctly? Testing is the bottom line.
Ferret7446··on Canceling "Hey"
Who decides what is morally wrong? If everyone decided to not follow or enforce laws based on their own morals, society would be in absolute chaos. You can't have a functioning society around "I do what I believe, fuck y'all"
Ferret7446··on Modern email can be built from borrowed parts
Where are these people? Do you mean "many people" as in a few hundred, representing 0.000% of the billions that use email world-wide?
Ferret7446··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
Chinese train infrastructure also had a lot more casualties than any modern Western nation, even with a conservative estimate of the covered up ones. Building fast is a lot easier if you can break some eggs.
Ferret7446··on I Championed Prediction Markets. Look What They've Become
It was quite clear covid was potentially a danger months before the "full outbreak". There were short news articles "in the margins" about a disease in Wuhan, with conspiracy theorists talking it up. It would plausibly have given us a month early notice. Hard to say how much that would have helped, but it might have improved the total outcome somewhat.
Ferret7446··on I Championed Prediction Markets. Look What They've Become
Prediction markets are a superior method for determining public sentiment, and understanding public sentiment is useful for many reasons. It can guide economic decisions, picking policy, etc.

Basically, prediction markets are for public sentiment what free markets are for supply and demand. They create an emergent system that balances/optimizes variables across a large domain.

Ferret7446··on Kill The Cookie Banner
The solution for the problem caused by regulation is more regulation. Sure, we didn't anticipate the negative consequences the first dozen times, but this time there will absolutely not be any unanticipated consequences.
Ferret7446··on My Emacs Configuration (Dired)
The community is allergic to breaking backwards compatibility, which is a lesson that is sorely wanted. Emacs didn't accrue decades of extensions and user customizations by breaking things every couple months like most other software.
Ferret7446··on Fil-C: Garbage In, Memory Safety Out [video]
The main advantage of Rust is that you can rewrite GPL software and replace the license with MIT.
Ferret7446··on I regret migrating to Codeberg
On the contrary? Selective enforcement is tyranny. I'm sure the projects that they disagree with politically are far more likely to be "AI generated" than the projects that they agree with politically.
Ferret7446··on I regret migrating to Codeberg
The problem with politically radical communities is that sooner or later you'll find yourself on the other side. "I didn't speak out because I wasn't X" and all that. I never liked codeberg because I saw the writing on the wall. GitHub is flawed, but it is at least more tolerant of dissenting values. You can both host anti AI and pro AI content side by side; imagine that!
Ferret7446··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
The centralization and PoS makes Ethereum unsafe. What's the point of moving from a currency that a government can unilaterally control to a currency that the Ethereum board/stakers can unilaterally control?

The point of PoW is that it resists monopolization unlike PoS.

Ferret7446··on OpenNode – Bitcoin Payment Processor
That's more the fact that lightning is a bit of a pain to use. It has a chicken and egg network growth problem, which is doubled on top of the chicken and egg problem of its host crypto
Ferret7446··on OpenNode – Bitcoin Payment Processor
Or without a monopoly/mafia taking its protection fee cut
Ferret7446··on Do we just want slaves?
Fundamentally, is the same cause as "the left can't meme". At least for the foreseeable future, GenAI is a power amplifier; it still needs a competent user to drive it. The US left are effectively a hollow shell of identity politics and socialism so they won't be able to meaningfully use AI to drive their influence.

Historically, they used their dominance of mainstream media to control public opinion, but now much of that power is being democratized (e.g. Twitter being uncensored), which enables the average user (using GenAI) to participate in public discourse. The US left doesn't have the ability to do this since the average individual only parrots what mainstream media says and can't create any novel/interesting ideas (thus "the left can't meme").

Ferret7446··on Five US tech giants' hidden debts soar to $1.65T on opaque AI funding
It's the middle class who gets screwed. The super wealthy and corps don't have their assets stored in banks.
