FalconSensei··on Europe approves first saliva-based contraceptive – no pill required
> which is then synced to a companion mobile app.

So basically an even worse (for the users) form of tracking someone's cycle, in terms of privacy

FalconSensei··on Europe approves first saliva-based contraceptive – no pill required
> women would have to trust men to take the pill

the same is valid the other way around.

FalconSensei··on Europe approves first saliva-based contraceptive – no pill required
yeah, but there are a lot of side effects and not everyone can take it.
FalconSensei··on The Static Site Paradox
> It's not the developer's convenience. It's the readers.

The marketing folks and copywriters are being paid to post, and they have a manager and boss to report to - which can fire them.

I guess it's very much about convenience and ease of use to people writing the posts

FalconSensei··on The Static Site Paradox
But the editors want. So... I guess you are out of touch with your own clients. Either you actually don't know their needs, or you didn't take the time to sit with them to explain why they shouldn't have that
FalconSensei··on The Static Site Paradox
> a form handler for static websites available under the AGP

Marketing and copywriting people don't know any of those licenses. And I guess not ironically, first search result for me for AGPL was "Understanding the AGPL: The Most Misunderstood License". So this already makes it kind of a no-go. If I'm in a rush to add a form, I need a simple answer: can I use for business purposes and do I have to pay for it?

FalconSensei··on The Static Site Paradox
> and costs literally nothing to host

Costs nothing to host, but then you need to train every user, which demands time, will make productivity go down every time there's a new user. VS wordpress, which any copywriter or marketer already knows how to write on, or will learn in just a few minutes because creating a post there and clicking 'publish' is easy

FalconSensei··on The Static Site Paradox
> editors still want WP, because this or that plugin

So you are saying that you are still missing functionality

FalconSensei··on The Static Site Paradox
The mass of readers don't have the same requirements as HackerNews commenters. Proof is that content on wordpress still gets viewed and apparently, leads to sales.
FalconSensei··on The Static Site Paradox
> Many sites have dropped comments altogether

And many still have. I think most wordpress.com and blogger blogs have comments on

FalconSensei··on The Static Site Paradox
This is what drove me away from static sites. It's actually more work because you have to be the one to do all the stuff.

Sure, there are a few options for hosting and generating the build, but when I tried, they were not that good, or had some issues, etc... Meanwhile, wordpress.com never disappointed, and has an app for iOS and Android that you can use to update stuff whenever you are - as long as you have internet, of course.

That's why nowadays I use Obsidian Publish. Of course, I could use Quartz or some other alternative for building a site from my obsidian vault but... none will just work out of the box, from your phone

FalconSensei··on Moments in Chromecast's history
> I suspect that being a dongle is part of the appeal of Chromecast for many people.

Exactly. Also: I just want to watch stuff. I don't want AI or smart-home features.

FalconSensei··on Apple unveils 'Passwords' manager app at WWDC 2024
My main reason to use this would be to maybe have an easier time adding a login when I'm on mobile - hopefully Apple would make it as easy as with bitwarden's desktop browser extension where you can just click 'save' or 'update' after logging in

My main reason not to use it is because I guess not going to work as well with firefox desktop?

FalconSensei··on Lowercase – A simple way to take and share notes
Obsidian Sync costs money to sync your files between devices. Obsidian Publish also costs money on top of that to publish your notes.
FalconSensei··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
exactly. Nothing changes if TikTok is sold, and even if it ends up banned in the US, she would be zombified by Instagram or whatever else people flock to
FalconSensei··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
I don't know if it's the lack of content or what, but doing the same searches on Instagram usually return garbage. And their algo refuses to understand that I want to see music/books/movies reels instead of girls dancing almost naked.
FalconSensei··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Now let's get Facebook/Instagram and Twitter banned from EU/Asia since they are owned by US companies
FalconSensei··on Help us invent CSS Grid Level 3, a.k.a. "Masonry" layout
Masonry layout is pretty common for streets, sidewalks, driveways, etc, at least in Brazil
FalconSensei··on Code search is hard
Do you plan on ever allowing users to change the font size?
FalconSensei··on Letting go of the idea of keeping up
> how do you keep off YouTube/Netflix in the evening?

not Having Netflix is a start. Realizing that most Netflix shows gets dumped mid-story after 1 or 2 seasons and will leave me without closure is another

FalconSensei··on Letting go of the idea of keeping up
> Knowing that I'm a week behind or whatever tells me that I've been focusing on things that don't make me as happy as reading books does, and I should make an effort to spend less of my day watching YouTube and more of it reading books (that's what I spent that time on, not reading Proust).

It's the same thing for me. I don't have any goal for books, but I look back and think "hey, last month I wasn't reading too much, why is that?"

This year I'm also interested in movies, so I set a goal to watch at least 4 per month. It's more to make sure I don't waste time on Youtube/TikTok/Social Media, and take the time to do things I enjoy more in the long run

FalconSensei··on Visa, Mastercard Agree to Lower Swipe Fees, Settling Long-Running Lawsuit
if there's no difference in price, I'm paying card, simple as that
FalconSensei··on How to keep engineers out of meeting hell
a slack message can solve that
FalconSensei··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
Exactly. And also: childcare. Here in Canada, you may have to wait 4~5 years to get childcare, and it's very expensive (and you have to pay to enter the wailist). People even joke that your kid is going to be working by the time they get a spot
FalconSensei··on Lossy CSS compression for fun and loss (or profit)
Seems interesting, but for a CSS post, I would really expect some screenshots showing the difference
FalconSensei··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
> At least in the US, imessage gives apple an effective monopoly. Their are strong social repercussions for not having imessage. If you want to be included you pretty much must have an iPhone.

That's because people are idiots. There's nothing that iMessage does that whatsapp, telegram, kakao, line can't do. In fact, US/Canada are the only ones that actually use SMS or iMessage, as far as I know, and the rest of the world use other messaging apps. I have been living in Canada for 5 years already, and in no instance I had any issue whatsoever. I now use iPhone, but nobody talks to me via iMessage, it's all either Messenger or Whatsapp, or Instagram

If Apple is able to hold such a stronghold over Americans because of something so easily bypassed, then you deserve to be controlled, really.

FalconSensei··on The absurdity of the return-to-office movement
It's kinda obvious what they meant if you have some reading comprehension and basic logic
FalconSensei··on Will Japan see more marriages with Tokyo's taxpayer-funded AI-driven dating app?
The second bullet-point in the subtitle says everything: does that resolve why people don't wanna get married?

> One of the most frequently cited reasons why Japanese prefer to remain single and thus contribute to the country’s population decline is the lack of finances to marry and raise children.

and...

> More worryingly for some, the app will require users to provide documents that confirm their annual incomes

So... that looks kida backwards, right?

FalconSensei··on Remote work doesn't seem to affect productivity, Fed study finds
Not only the commute, but also lunch breaks. In US and Canada, lunch breaks are short, but back in Brazil I had a 1:30h lunch break, and then at another job, 1:12. But I'm at the office, can't go to bed, I'm at the company's computer so can't do anything I want, also it's in the office, so if watching some TV show or anime that has more graphic content, that might also be a no.

So basically, waste of time.

FalconSensei··on What do premarital experiences have to do with marital quality? (2014)
> I don't think it is really necessary to do a formal "program", if you can work through all the big topics effectively together.

In theory, yes. But it's surprising how little het. cis couples talk about important stuff before getting married. Like, if/how many many, if they wanna live close to parents or move to another country, etc
