FabCH··on I'm being cyberattacked by Tesla, Inc
If the non-profit was walking down the road and rattling everybody’s door lock to see which are unlocked, and having a look around the windows to see if any are open, would that be a crime?

Because that is exactly what all of these vulnerability scanning companies are doing, and all of us sort of just… let them.

FabCH··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
Gamers Nexus paid a lawyer to read the contract and had one of their staff members try to read the entire thing on the TV.

The lawyers conclusion is that a non-lawyer basically has no chance of correctly interpreting the contract and the TV auto-standby almost made it physically impossible for the staff member to even read it.

The „happy path“ is the only path, for all practical purposes.

FabCH··on LG says we're fake news [video]
The hours of video evidence overlaid with network capture and interviews with security researchers and lawyers they released is not enough for you?

I’m curious, what would meet your bar for investigativ journalism if that didn’t?

FabCH··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
Europeans have alternative payment networks already. For example, CH has Twint.

They are actively being unified into a cross-border payment network.

Of all the things to complain, this is the one where they are actually doing something…

FabCH··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
Article 3 of the Geneva Convention.

Laying down your arms is generally considered an expression of surrender and renders protection.

Also, who sends scouts unarmed? They should at least have a sidearm.

FabCH··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
Correct.

That's not interpolation though, that's theft.

FabCH··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
They meant that even the happens-very-fast AI singularity isn’t sub-picosecond. It still exists in time, and has a duration.

The event horizon would then be the time period between the singularity becoming inevitable and it actually happening.

FabCH··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
Almost all of human development is interpolation over data we have seen before.

It’s not exactly a strong argument against AI.

FabCH··on A/I shuts down
100%. I absolutely would prefer my own country to be a global superpower, but it isn’t.

However, currently, only US and Russia have publicly threatened my country, and both are currently engaged in a trade war with us.

China on the other hand is selling us cheap batteries and solar panels.

FabCH··on A/I shuts down
TBH China is not currently bombing a foreign country for no reason and it is not threatening to invade its allies.

It’s not a particularly high bar, but of the big powers, only China currently meets it.

And I know you will say „but payment networks are not a warfare question, they are an economic question“ but that kind of breaks down when they are used to sanction ICC judges presiding over war crime cases.

FabCH··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
You changed the topic. The topic is not what Codeberg should care about. The topic was trust in the humans behind Codeberg to not delete private repositories on a whim. Codeberg community is free to care about whatever it sees fit. That doesn't protect them from criticism.

Do I trust humans behind Codeberg to behave sensibly? No.

Would more precise terms of service that explain what Codeberg community thinks is ok help with such trust? Yes.

Should the humans behind Codeberg care what I think? Maybe? Presumably they do care about reaching _some_ users, otherwise why have the service public at all?

FabCH··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
„ and if your intention is fine and good, they'll be OK with it“

That doesn’t work because „fine and good“ doesn’t mean the same thing to Codeberg voters/admins and to a large part of the hacke news population. Notably, Codeberg is morally opposed to AI.

FabCH··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
From what they list on the website, they don’t offer N+2 reliability / they are not present in sufficient geos to actually act as a CDN.
FabCH··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
Can I just point out that either the vendor is small and therefor can’t actually offer the N+2 reliability you list as a weakness of self-hosting, or they are large enough for N+2 but then stop being small.

My tiny website doesn’t need a CDN and doesn’t need atomic updates.

FabCH··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
So is Scaleway…
FabCH··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
Why do you assume they will be ok with it?

They recently made some very ideological decisions…

FabCH··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
The pricing is bananas. Why on earth is the bandwidth metered?

An EU tiny VPS on Scaleway with unlimited bandwidth costs 5€. This thing costs 9€. With limited bandwidth.

?!

FabCH··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
An artillery crew is armed with the cannon.

POWs don’t have attorneys, but they do have rights. Limiting food and medical aid is a war crime.

Of course, everybody routinely violates the rights of POWs, and only the losers ever get prosecuted.

FabCH··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
Note that the UK would be committing war crimes in this case, since you are not allowed to murder unarmed soldiers, you are supposed to capture them and put them in POW camps.

Which is typically called „arresting“ when a government does it to their own citizens…

FabCH··on Uefa pursuing criminal legal action against Infantino
No. Although I believe some crimes are not optional and must be prosecuted.

Somewhat interesting, even if you as a victim don’t want it, some crimes are simply mandated to be prosecuted.

FabCH··on Uefa pursuing criminal legal action against Infantino
Private prosecution does exist, but only for some crimes. IIRC if the public prosecutor refuses to prosecute libel, I think that is one of the rare few crimes you can prosecute civil-ly.
FabCH··on Uefa pursuing criminal legal action against Infantino
Unless you know what that very specific word means, it’s not obvious to everyone because it’s not the same in all legal systems.

It was worth mentioning.

It also matters because that means UEFA can only really ask nicely, and hope they get those documents. A public prosecutor could ask both nicely and with force.

FabCH··on Uefa pursuing criminal legal action against Infantino
I am not a lawyer, but I do live in Zurich.

AFAIK, you can’t actually bring criminal charges as a civilian. You make a complaint to the public prosecutor and they choose to press criminal charges. Some crimes are only prosecuted if somebody complains. And obviously public prosecutors have far more legal power than civilians.

I wonder how sure UEFA is that the prosecutors will prosecute.

FabCH··on Stop Making TUIs
I don't really understand this comment. Anything in particular I should be looking for?
FabCH··on Stop Making TUIs
Visual things often are.

I love the visual style. It's especially interesting to set the colour scheme to the orange/yellow glow of reaaaly old school terminals.

FabCH··on Stop Making TUIs
Counterpoint: Build more TUIs in Rust using Ratatui: https://ratatui.rs/

Why? Because just look at the examples on that page.

FabCH··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
Typically, the government takes over a company.

The shareholders or owners may or may not receive compensation.

Presumably a normal(?) interpretation would be that the British government uses whatever eminent domain law it has and it takes over Adels copyright on all her songs and gives her whatever the fair market value of the catalog is.

But because this is a joke candidate, could be anything.

FabCH··on Ask HN: In your experience, what are sound conventions for e-ink UI development?
Agree. But that is the OPs job then. The difference between good and bad design is that it will make those choices well.
FabCH··on Ask HN: In your experience, what are sound conventions for e-ink UI development?
I use eInk as my daily driver and do everything including ssh into tmux into vim and code on eInk.

I build all my UIs with Rust and Ratatui. It works very well.

So for web, I think it would translate to:

0) NO ANIMATION. You have like, 0.3 fps. You might poke somebody’s eye out if you animate something.

1) NO SCROLLING. Pagination only.

2) Use actual added visual element to tell the user where their input control / cursor / selection is. Don’t rely on color, font weight etc. Put an asterisk, Unicode arrow or something.

3) Direct(?) action controls. A button should DO something. Don’t give me a button that opens a drop-down that opens a menu to do something.

4) Use the whole screen! Keeping a pixel on/off costs nothing. Only changes do. So any whitespace is just sacrificing screen real estate and forcing more frequent changes.

FabCH··on The climate benefits of retiring an operational combustion engine vehicle
It seems to me you are not aware you can use dish soap and pry bar, wrench or screwdrivers to mount tires on rims. Enjoy:
