FL410··on Show HN: Training a model to identify AI web content from structure alone
Oh it gets worse. Apparently Comcast is now using a voice-changing AI - it's a real (probably Latin or Asian) person getting their voice replaced on-the-fly to sound "American."
FL410··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
Having been to defcon a number of times, I truly have no idea what you're talking about.
FL410··on We got admin access to Baseten's production GitHub in 25 minutes
Agreed. I suppose they'd have slightly less credibility by saying "we hacked <unnamed company>" but it strikes me as far classier than naming & shaming.
FL410··on Anthropic candidates face blunt money question
Based on Opus 5, I can only conclude they've activated their plan to drive the stock price to 0
FL410··on Bringing the cybersecurity capabilities of Claude Mythos 5 to more defenders
Seems like a whole lot of nothing for the average user. They have really lost the plot.
FL410··on GPT-5.6 Sol Pricing Cut by 50% on OpenRouter
As one random example, today I had it hit a refusal loop when adding a country selector dropdown to a form, presumably because it contained a “bad” country name? I hit refusals at least 2-3 times per day, sometimes many more. The worst part is it is often right in the middle of a multi-stage task, so the only option is really to switch to Opus 5 and let it defecate its absurdly verbose comments all over the rest of the edits in the turn and hope it doesn’t go on one of its tangents, then have Sol do damage control. Oh and I got approved for their “cyber verification program” blessing, which comically does absolutely nothing for Fable.
FL410··on GPT-5.6 Sol Pricing Cut by 50%
Fable feels less cumbersome to work with, but it is SO DAMN ANNOYING with the refusals that I'm leaning more and more on Sol, and very much looking forward to GPT6. Just seems like Anthropic is trying their hardest to ruin their reputation and user experience.
FL410··on Why Addresses Have Numbers
Fun one: Costa Rican addresses are still often relative to a landmark. I used to have a subcontractor there, and his address was something like "500m north of the old church" (which IIRC wasn't even there anymore). It was kinda hard to figure out how to get this into the DHL website, but it always made it there.
FL410··on Running Gemma 4 26B at 5 tokens/sec on a 13-year-old Xeon with no GPU
The PR? He said it was AI in the comment you replied to...

I don't think the post itself reads like AI at all, but that's just me.

FL410··on LaGuardia pilots raised safety alarms months before deadly runway crash
And therein lies the problem. Clearly, having one overworked controller running a combined tower is not safe nor sustainable.
FL410··on LaGuardia pilots raised safety alarms months before deadly runway crash
This. Go look at the atc subreddit, controllers have been begging for help for ages. This isn't one guy's fault.

>it's customary to leave a path in the left 'passing lane' for any traffic that wants/needs to go faster than you

It's not just customary in many (most?) states, it's the law. People who sit in the left lane are the problem.

FL410··on Scientists discover beer bottle in the Mariana Trench (2024)
But the forces are the same all around the bottle (again assuming it is open)
FL410··on Unifi Travel Router
Probably. I do this with a GLinet and it works great.
FL410··on Autoland saves King Air, everyone reported safe
This is a huge milestone, and everyone at Garmin who worked on Autoland should be patting themselves on the back, they saved some lives today and will undoubtedly save more. Amazing technology.
FL410··on US air traffic controllers start resigning as shutdown bites
That’s not how it works, like at all. Private airports don’t have controllers, and the ones I presume you are thinking of (smaller PUBLIC airports) the controllers are either employed or funded by the FAA.
FL410··on Guideline has been acquired by Gusto
Their support is a literal train wreck
FL410··on Gemini in Chrome
This is literally the worst part of Gemini. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out if, and if so what, they are training on even with my stupid $250/mo subscription. It's totally opaque.
FL410··on The Cursed programming language
I'm sorry but I love it
FL410··on Setting up a home VPN server with WireGuard (2019)
And when it doesn't (which is often the case behind NAT), you're at the mercy of their relays which are not particularly fast.
FL410··on Setting up a home VPN server with WireGuard (2019)
Tailscale is slloowwww and I'm not a big fan of someone else controlling my network. Yeah, tailnet lock at all that, I know, but still...
FL410··on VHS-C: When a lazy idea stumbles towards perfection [video]
Then you'd really be missing out, because Aging Wheels is awesome
FL410··on Weather Model based on ADS-B
This is really cool and not what I was expecting. Nice work!
FL410··on Weather Model based on ADS-B
You're right, but "slightly older" is on the order of seconds.
FL410··on Ask HN: Any active COBOL devs here? What are you working on?
In my experience, it's usually lack of awareness about modern security risks, and lack of familiarity with modern infrastructure paradigms. The latter really isn't a problem since these systems are usually standalone, but the former does become a problem - they often are from a time where this just wasn't something to consider. As a result, these legacy systems are often using default passwords, have tons of crazy stuff exposed to the network, and are comprised of custom code written specifically for the business purpose (so the documentation is only as good as what they made).

On the other hand, these guys generally write pretty neat, lean code that is quick, reliable, and directly responsive to the business. The really fun thing is watching the users fly through the keyboard-only screens, sometimes with muscle memory that is faster than the terminal emulator can update - they're literally working ahead of the screens.

FL410··on Measuring power network frequency using junk you have in your closet
Is there any API for the US grids?

I remember reading an article about this being used in some forensic capacity to determine the date/time a video was taken by comparing the frequency noise.

FL410··on Final report on Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 in-flight exit door plug separation
It’s a bit more nuanced than that. CFIT is intended to classify accidents where the aircraft itself was not causal. In any other case, it is assumed that there were mechanical or other aircraft-related factors that were contributory or causal.
FL410··on Military leaders aghast as Zuck crashes classified Oval Office meeting
Why would a cell phone even work in a SCIF?
FL410··on The story of Max, a real programmer
I would argue those days are coming back. Thanks to LLMs, I have probably 10x more "utility" scripts/programs than I had 2 years ago. Rather than bang my head against the wall for a couple hours to figure out how to (just barely) do something in Python to scratch an itch, I can get a nice, well documented, reusable and versatile tool in seconds. I'm less inclined than ever to go find some library or product that kinda does what I need it to do, and instead create a simple tool of my own that does exactly what I need it to.
