FL410··on Cyber Security: A pre-war reality check
But that's better than taking them all down. Fact of the matter is most of us hate using VORs anyway, and left to our own devices probably wouldn't care one bit if they were removed.

It is a good thing that someone is second-guessing that. Degrading to MON wouldn't be great, but it would be much preferrable to hoping poor ATC can figure out how to vector everyone all the sudden.

I think more industries could apply the idea of a Minimum Operational whatever

FL410··on SWPC issues first G4 geomagnetic storm watch since 2005
I am confused by the slide, which mentions in the first bullet point that this is the first "G4" since 2005, but in the last bullet point says there was one in March.
FL410··on I made an open source Windows app to rewind and search everything on screen
Probably rewind.ai
FL410··on Some Fritz!Box modems might have been hijacked
But the resolution doesn't fail, it just returns an incorrect A record. Have you tried it on a Windows PC?
FL410··on Some Fritz!Box modems might have been hijacked
Does this not just break all DNS-resolved internet traffic for these devices at this point? Seems like the resolvers for fritz.box. are resolving *.fritz.box. to 45.76.93.104. I would assume the affected (Windows?) clients aren't working at all when they get this kind of response for something like google.com.fritz.box.
FL410··on Some Fritz!Box modems might have been hijacked
Your query results make sense, since the Fritz!Box is authoritative for the (local) .box tld. Try again with google.com and google.com. If you're using Windows, it should append .fritz.box to the former, which is the issue here.
FL410··on Limitless: Personalized AI powered by what you've seen, said, and heard
Big fan of Rewind (despite the impact on battery life!). My favorite part of it is that everything is verifiably local. I'll take an inferior AI model to shipping recordings of everything I see/hear to someone else.

Hard pass on Limitless. I don't care how good the encryption is, sending this kind of thing to anyone's cloud is a nope for me.

FL410··on Nebula is Not the Fastest Mesh VPN (But neither are any of the others)
I like the tone of this benchmark. Not too often you see this kind of thing without an obvious marketing bias.

I am a big fan of Nebula/DN, and the benchmarks generally jive with my personal experience. I use both TS and DN (and have used ZT in the past), but for reasons I don't totally understand DN is usually way, way faster than TS for me - so that's my preference.

FL410··on NetBox: a source of truth for everything on your network
NetBox is awesome, super powerful.

I'm also really excited about the recently (like last week) added IPAM/Rack management in Hudu (kind of like IT Glue). It's pretty rudimentary but they seem to iterate quickly and that will be a great option for people who do IPAM/rack documentation for many customers.

FL410··on Starlink's laser system is beaming 42 petabytes of data per day
Starlink does encrypt user traffic
FL410··on Juniper Networks to Combine with HPE
This has the potential to be good. HPE has mostly let the (superior) Aruba line grow as they were, and TBH the CX stuff is quite good. They don't have any enterprise class routing/firewalls. Their AP hardware is great but Central can be frustrating. If they can put the pieces together without fucking things up, there's a good product line up here at a time when people are sick and tired of Cisco's licensing antics. TBD...
FL410··on Can a pill prevent deaths from venomous snakebites?
As embarrassing as that sentence is, it is highly unlikely he left with a $95,000 bill, nor is it likely his insurance company actually paid anywhere near that for the vials. The prices that end up on healthcare bills may as well be in another currency, since they tend to be used as placeholders subject to all kinds of contractual math down the road.

None of which is to say that our healthcare system ISN'T a mess, it is.

FL410··on Pilots hide mental health problems so they don't lose their licenses
It’s not just about hiding the problem from the FAA, it’s about a pervasive fear of getting help due to losing their livelihood. There are tons of really common reasons for wanting some mental health guidance (loss in the family, career stress, martial, whatever). Imagine having to choose between letting a relatively normal and treatable issue fester, or getting help but potentially losing your 20+ year career. It’s a shit situation and for all the FAA’s gyrations about mental health, this is fully their problem and they should be positively ashamed with their lack of reform.
FL410··on Submarine Cable Map 2023
...but only after you scroll all the way to the bottom. What a horrible design.
FL410··on Show HN: WireHub – easily create and share WireGuard networks
Check out Nebula/Defined.net
FL410··on The costs of microservices (2020)
Looks like Excalidraw
FL410··on Finding that lead emissions from aircraft engines contribute to air pollution
Approved but not available. Believe me, everyone wishes we could just move on from leaded avgas, but it seems like the FAA wants to drag this out as long as possible.
FL410··on Taking on SpaceX: Why Germany is building its own spaceport
Well don't worry, we have a fully stacked Starship waiting up to half a year for a Fish & Wildlife survey. Take your time.
FL410··on Would we still create Nebula today?
Big fan of Nebula, especially Defined, which makes it real easy to setup/maintain
FL410··on Support HDR images in your app [video]
Yes. The HDR on a recent Macbook Pro is the real deal, and unmistakable when you see it. Same with modern OLED HDR TVs - they can get so bright it hurts.
FL410··on Where does my computer get the time from?
I thought it was a very fun, stream-of-consciousness kind of read.
FL410··on A new firm says it can link satellites to ordinary smartphones (2020)
(2020).

SpaceX is working on direct to mobile as well now.

FL410··on Windy.com: global weather website with live filters
In the US we have Area Forecast Discussions (AFDs) issued by regional weather offices. They are a great resource and I wish more people outside aviation knew about them. They will generally include a high level discussion, detailed conversations about each forecast period, as well as aviation and marine (if applicable) considerations. Usually gives some great insight into what, for example “chance of showers” really means.

Example: https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=OKX&issuedby=O...

FL410··on Tailscale vs. Narrowlink
Same, I love Nebula/Defined
FL410··on Dublin Airport airbrige collapsed, damaging American Airlines Boeing 787
That airplane is surely not going anywhere any time soon, but it seems we have far different ideas of “severely damaged.”
FL410··on Amazon’s electric Rivian vans have delivered 150M packages
Early adopter, yeah, but hardly the same kind of “1.0” an early Tesla was. I’ve had my R1T for over a year and it is without a shadow of doubt my favorite car I’ve ever owned, and that’s coming from a die hard V8-loving car dork. It’s just SO good at everything. They really hit it out of the park.
FL410··on Tinc, a GPLv2 mesh routing VPN
Same, Nebula (I prefer Defined though) works great. Rock solid.
FL410··on FAA seeks public input on drone operations
That’s dumb. ADSB is the standard for aviation now. Make it work on drones, don’t try and make some new standard. Pretty sure uAvionix had already solved this way back in 2015 when I was in the industry.
FL410··on Don Bateman, inventor of the GPWS, has died
And if you're really into it... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FwwBYzU2gE&
FL410··on Linux Networking Shallow Dive: WireGuard, Routing, TCP/IP and NAT
