FL410··on The story of Max, a real programmer
I would argue those days are coming back. Thanks to LLMs, I have probably 10x more "utility" scripts/programs than I had 2 years ago. Rather than bang my head against the wall for a couple hours to figure out how to (just barely) do something in Python to scratch an itch, I can get a nice, well documented, reusable and versatile tool in seconds. I'm less inclined than ever to go find some library or product that kinda does what I need it to do, and instead create a simple tool of my own that does exactly what I need it to.
FL410··on Show HN: I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights
You could (probably) pull the ADSB data for a "representative" flight on given routes and use that to at least get close - probably would still be useful for things like radiation exposure mentioned elsewhere.

Otherwise, maybe you can get Claude to vibe code you a mobile app that runs in the background and collects all the interesting data (GPS, cabin alt, etc)

FL410··on Gemini CLI
I appreciate the effort here, but I’m still confused. Is my $250/mo “ultra” plan considered personal and still something you train on?
FL410··on Gemini CLI
To be honest this is by far the most frustrating part of the Gemini ecosystem, to me. I think 2.5 pro is probably the best model out there right now, and I'd love to use it for real work, but their privacy policies are so fucking confusing and disjointed that I just assume there is no privacy whatsoever. And that's with the expensive Pro Plus Ultra MegaMax Extreme Gold plan I'm on.

I hope this is something they're working on making clearer.

FL410··on Munich from a Hamburger's perspective
Yes, agreed, never go there! The schnitzel is small and horrible! :)
FL410··on Munich from a Hamburger's perspective
FWIW as a (somewhat frequent) visitor this has not been my experience at all, and in comparision to other European cities I found it very warm and inviting.
FL410··on VisionOS 26 keeps pushing Apple's newest platform toward the future
Daily driver no, but after the somewhat recent ultrawide monitor update, it is absolutely viable for travel. It's nice not to be constrained by a 14" monitor while on the road, and it's perfectly usable for a couple hours of work (especially if you take the surround seal off and use one of the head strap mounts that take all the pressure off your face).
FL410··on Show HN: Meteosource – Hyper-local weather API based on improved ML models
Cool! Pilots are always looking for better/more accurate weather data.

If you can predict visibility (in statue miles) and ceiling height (in feet AGL), you can predict the flight category (VFR, MVFR, IFR, LIFR) which would be quite useful for aviation.

FL410··on BGP handling bug causes widespread internet routing instability
BGP is very much not only for private networks - it is what the internet is built on.

Maybe you are thinking of iBGP or something like OSPF?

FL410··on The Iconic 3DBenchy Enters the Public Domain
Pretty much just go buy a Bambu X1C and be done with it. I've been through a bunch of 3d printers, all of which required constant tinkering and babysitting. The Bambu just works, you click print and it prints, and fast.

There's some drama now around them closing up the ecosystem and locking out third party firmware, etc. but I honestly could care less so long as it stays good at being a printer.

FL410··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
YouTube is not a good representation of what you hear in a headset. Half the time the mic taps aren't impedence matched and sound like shit.

Besides that, most "controlling" (i.e. instructions that require action) comms have a handshake of sorts - the pilot repeats back the instruction for the controller to confirm. They don't just bark out instructions and hope you heard it, they listen for you to read them back, and will keep doing so until successful. So, even in cases when the comms are degraded, you will go back and forth until there has been positive confirmation (readback) you heard the instruction correctly (or they'll just give you a new frequency).

FL410··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
Yep. Radios are much clearer in the air. VHF is mostly line of sight and planes have the benefit of altitude. Approach/center comms can get a bit scratchy at times mostly due to distance, but approach/tower is almost always perfectly clear.
FL410··on Building a T1D smartwatch for my son from scratch
This is really cool. Having gone through some of the same challenges for hobby projects myself (learning Fusion, learning to make a PCB, learning to make the 10th revision of the PCB), you're being quite humble - each one of these things is hard with a steep learning curve.

Awesome work!

FL410··on Garmin's –$40B Pivot
They have really become the gold standard in avionics, so much so that some airframes are preferred to others due to the fact that they've chosen to integrate a Garmin flight deck instead of Honeywell/Rockwell/etc. They have a very consistent and capable design methodology that extends from single engine piston avionics all the way up through relatively large GA jets.
FL410··on I've Acquired a New Superpower
Very cool. Even the impossible mode one was relatively easy!
FL410··on 2solitude – Honeywell TPE 331-12 refitted Antonov AN-2 camper
This is cool.

I think my blank-check lottery plane would be a Grumman Albatross with PT6s and a yacht interior.

FL410··on Eliminating Daylight Savings Time would make the average American’s life darker
But that's also not really what Trump is proposing, right? The NYT article Nate Silver linked to quotes:

>“Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is OK with me!” Mr. Trump posted on social media in March 2019.

I presume by "ending Daylight Saving Time" he meant making DST permanent and ending the process of changing, which seems to be what everyone agrees is the right thing to do.

FL410··on Eliminating Daylight Savings Time would make the average American’s life darker
Can we switch to 24h time like sane human beings, too?

FL410··on Guide to 3D Print Motorized Rotation Mounts for Optical Applications (2021)
Man, Edmund Scientific is a throwback. They used to have an awesome surplus store in NJ full of all kinds of nerd stuff.
FL410··on Is 3D printing being held back by an invalid patent?
> This comment is not legal advice.

Serious question, why do lawyers always do this? No other profession seems to feel the need to disclaim their dialog.

Is there some precedent for attorneys discussing their area of expertise and unwittingly becoming someone’s counsel?

FL410··on Please do not write below the line
> A Licensing officer may call at your property not to collect the letters but to check that you are not watching a TV.

Just the thought of this is funny. What kind of uniforms do TV Officers wear? Do they get to carry a weapon? What happens if they find you watching a TV?

Amazing.

FL410··on Support for IPv6
It’s not magical, it’s exactly the same as IPv4, you either peer with them via BGP and advertise it yourself, or you give them an LOA to advertise it on your behalf.
FL410··on Going open-source as a VC-Backed company
This looks like cool software and something I might be interested in, but I hate hate hate locking SSO behind the "enterprise" tier. I wish this wasn't so common.
FL410··on How does MS Fight Simulator compare to real flights? (2020)
I've not played MSFS2020 since just after it came out, but at that time XPlane was still king when it came to realistic rendering of flight physics. There is no question MSFS looked better, though. Wonder if that has changed?
FL410··on If AI chatbots are the future, I hate it
The general trend of insulating the human customer away from human customer service is just a horrible thing that keeps spreading. It was bad enough outsourcing customer support to overseas agents who have their hands tied to only read from a script and generally do nothing, and now we're just talking to computers that can generally do nothing. The message is the same: we don't actually care about our customers.

I own a small business and I would rather shut my doors than force my paying customers through AI cattle gates to struggle for help. I can understand that providing customer support on a massive scale is hard, but it is arguably the MOST important part of the customer experience, maybe even more so than the product itself. It seems incomprehensibly short-sighted to abstract it away in the name of short-term profits.

FL410··on Western Pennsylvania dirt is used in the infields of most MLB stadiums (2017)
This is neat. First I heard of it was this last weekend, when they mentioned during the Phillies/Mets game in London that the dirt had been shipped in from here as well.
FL410··on The Naughty Words the FAA Removed from the Sky
How do you say it, you mean? You don't. They are CNFs - computer navigation fixes, used primarily by FMSs and not ATC.
FL410··on Cyber Security: A pre-war reality check
This is one of my favorite reads on HN to date. I hope more people see it. It's funny how, even as a "nerd," I often think about if we are doing the wrong thing by taking the nerdy approach to problems that could be solved more simply. It feels like we often choose the most complex or nerdiest approach to prove to ourselves and others that we can and not whether we should - which isn't to say that we shouldn't ever - just that some problems deserve the simple solution.
