Elhana··on Firefox Quantum Lands in Beta, Developer Edition
When our admins actually care to migrate to java webstart and I can drop java plugin and firefox esr, I'll probably move to chrome, because selenium works better with chromedriver for me.

And yeah, I don't care much about which one loads page 0.5 secs faster - I used to download porn on a modem:) https://xkcd.com/598/

Elhana··on Consistent Selenium Testing in Python
clear() works for me consistently. At the same time, I had cases before when sendkeys was not sending complete string, so I had to compare it with get_attribute('value') to be sure.
Elhana··on How you can contribute to Firefox 57 success
I'm already on ESR, but my reason is I need java plugin for my company OEBS (it supports web start, but it takes ages for our admins to patch anything). At the same time, keeping legacy plugins working is a big bonus, I love Classic theme restorer.

Still undecided what to do after june 2018. I guess I'll just try firefox and chrome side by side and move to chrome if there is no real difference. It is probably more convinient to migrate to chrome, since it is on the phone by default too.

Elhana··on Why Some U.S. Ex-Spies Don't Buy the Russia Story
Because only "free" US media can influence US citizens... Mark Twain wrote about it long ago in his "Running for Governor"
Elhana··on Legacy extensions disabled by default on Firefox Nightly 57 starting August 11
https://xkcd.com/1172/

Although, I'm on ESR for now, mostly because my company admins cba to patch and enable java web start instead of java plugin for OEBS. Until recently it was stuck on java 1.6. They enabled recent java versions just a few month ago, so I guess I'm stuck with ESR for now.

Elhana··on Btrfs has been deprecated in RHEL
It has exactly the same bug with RAID10.
Elhana··on Putin signs law that prohibits technology providing access to banned websites
If you start advertising it as a way to bypass blacklist and open it to the world, it will probably get banned.
Elhana··on Putin signs law that prohibits technology providing access to banned websites
The idea is to make it hard for average person to use it - problem solved. Most likely will ban commercial vpn providers that refuse to implement blocklist for users from Russia.

If you are able to set up a personal openvpn server, they wont bother hunting you down.

Elhana··on Are You Ready to Consider That Capitalism Is the Real Problem?
Neither is actually bad. Problem is always in people.
Elhana··on Growing Ubuntu for Cloud and IoT, Rather Than Phone and Convergence
Short answer: Enterprise bosses like support contracts, because it covers their asses. You can basically ask the same question about redhat.
Elhana··on BlueCoat and other proxies hang up during TLS 1.3
Same thing I did when I noticed our bluecoat started mitm-ing my bank connection - ticket to IT to enable bypass for specific domain. They refused to do it for google/gmail, but banking sites start working normally on the next day. Youtube, facebook and other non work related stuff is just blocked, unless you need them to do your job (like PR dept).
Elhana··on Avoid Non-Microsoft Antivirus Software
I think what bluecoat proxy at my work does in this case is just inspect traffic and pass invalid cert to the client, since it is invalid already. If the cert is valid, replaces it with its own cert.
Elhana··on Avoid Non-Microsoft Antivirus Software
Microsoft just silently adds back root certs when you delete them (if it is trusted by microsoft). Or at least it did in winxp by default.
Elhana··on Freenom World – A fast and anonymous Public DNS resolver
It doesn't have to be public.
Elhana··on Systemd Sucks, Long Live Systemd
That is the point - you often can't just recompile journald part, because it is tied to systemd interfaces and you might not be able to easily upgrade systemd, because it is a production system you can't simply reboot like your home server. The only way to do that is backporting specific patches to the older version.

If it were a separate component, it would have a bunch of ifdefs covering several versions of systemd, possibly with some features disabled if older version doesn't support it. However, that somewhat increases code complexity for developers and systemd devs refuse to do that.

That is the point of 'monolithic' criticism - despite being many binaries, you can't easily just build single one and make that work.

Elhana··on Is the MMORPG Dying?
Activities that could be done occasionally is basically a single player game - go play skyrim or fallout 4 - you don't need MMO for that.

MMORPG should be left for the kids with enough spare time to raid 4+ hours a day. Many would disagree, but from my experience it is friends that keep you coming back every day and you can't make them this days with all this casual queues and playing few hours a week.

Elhana··on Angry Bots Demo
Same for me, asm.js version runs smooth and wasm had lags in few spots and strange glitches with bots getting stuck.
Elhana··on Huawei Boss Crashes; News Stories Disappear
I believe there is a difference between murder and manslaughter without intent. Negligence crime can possibly be compensated. Intentional murder should never have that option.
Elhana··on Huawei Boss Crashes; News Stories Disappear
There is another issue with this. When potential compensation is high, people start faking accidents to extort the compensation from drivers/insurance companies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqaig0nVcDs
Elhana··on Homeopathy 'treatments' must be labelled to say they do not work, US gov orders
There is valid reason to keep homeopathic treatments - sometimes psycho parent/patient comes to a doctor and demands a treatment. While doctor knows that there is none needed, such parent might be persistent and could otherwise give a child/himself something dangerous. In this case prescribing homeopathic placebo is a great way to calm down such person and stop him from self-medication. Sadly, it has a side effect of people starting to think that it actually works.
Elhana··on Site requests bank logins for online purchases
I believe that if buyer supports 3dsecure and merchant skips it, then he'll be the looser in case of a fraud.
Elhana··on ICQ: 20 Years Is No Limit
Numbers started at 10000, uin 31337 was one of the AOL admins.

141181 here btw, everyone is offline. One friend used icq until maybe a year ago, offline now too.

Elhana··on Linux RAID is different from Windows for sound technical and historical reasons
What he means is you can't add another disk in vdev. If you have a raidz with 3 disks, you can't add 4th one and rebalance. What you can do is either add another vdev to the pool, making it two+ striped raidz or you can replace your 3 disks with a bigger ones.

Reason for that is that adding a disk to vdev will require rebalancing everything and considering complexity of zfs, you better just make a new raidz with 4 disks and move data over, otherwise it might just take ages and complicate things a lot. This is obviously not ideal for a home user, but zfs was not created with a home users in mind.

Btrfs supposedly should let you do this, but their raid5/6 is still unstable - probably for a reason. In fact, this is not such a big deal. You can add disks to a zfs mirror (and it is real n-way mirror, not btrfs raid1 thing with multiple disks), you can add mirror vdevs to raid10 setup. If you are making raidz1/2/3 just make sure you understand that you can't expand it by adding more disks.

Elhana··on iPhone 7
I don't get the slimness either. I had no issue with my old N900 being twice as thick as my current android (and I loved physical keyboard on it too).

I guess if they make battery last 30% longer, then you won't be forced to change a phone in 2-3 years when battery starts deteriorating and it is bad for business.

Elhana··on Native encryption added to ZFS on Linux
ZFS don't really need ECC that much, just FUD.

Most likely someone got bitten by faulty RAM, got corrupted data, which stopped after getting ECC RAM. => "ZFS wants ECC" myth, but in reality you just need stable hardware.

At the same time, if you are running like 30-40 TB pool, you probably want that ECC RAM, it will cost only small fraction of total storage box price and will save you from rebuilding a pool if shit happens.

Elhana··on A ZFS developer’s analysis of Apple’s new APFS file system
Ntfs-3g writes fine on ntfs nowadays, WUBI even uses it for root, but there can be some edge cases still.
Elhana··on Systemd developer asks tmux to add systemd specific code
It is also the reason why most common advice is to just turn off SELinux. It blocks valid (although sometimes weird) usage, because someone else decided that 90% of users should not do something.

Developer knows better what program should and should not do and is much more capable to set this kind of rules with pledge.

Elhana··on ZFS lands in Debian contrib
As I understand it in btrfs case there is two problems: 1) Metadata in btrfs can use lots of space, especially when you convert from ext4. It might happen that you have gigabytes of free space reserved for metadata, so it can not be used anymore. This can be solved with rebalancing, but that can take ages, which is actually one of the reasons zfs doesn't have bpr rewrite feature. 2) btrfs can have mixed raid levels and in that scenario calculating free space is tricky, but people still rely on common tools, that simply give some estimates in that case. Change the way it estimates free space and you'll have less clueless people complaining about fs running out of it, but more will say btrfs shows too little.
Elhana··on BASIC for Android
Can be installed just fine in Russia.
Elhana··on Blizzard shutting down Nostalrius, popular WoW private server
MMORPGs was always about grind-to-win, ideally forcing a group play along the way - that built communities. Blizzard kinda killed that turning the game into a solo adventure - most people just logged in for a raid and be gone for the rest of the week and those casual pug raids was the last nail into the coffin of social bit, that actually kept me playing.

I've had enough in Cataclysm, but I can't really say if vanilla, tbc or lk was the best (ignoring my personal achievements in each of those, tbc was the peak of my raiding). All of those bring good memories.
