Eavolution··on Man with no ticket or passport flew from copenhagen to Los Angeles, FBI says
You say they check passports between Dublin and GB, but I'm a Northern Irish guy who took the car over the ferry from Belfast to Stranraer then back from Holyhead to Dublin, I didn't even think about bringing my passport with me. The height of customs was on the Dublin from Holyhead side, they got me to roll down my window and asked me what my nationality was.
Eavolution··on Show HN: Inshellisense – IDE style shell autocomplete
That'd have the problem of tools like grep returning nothing, having an exit code of 1, but being a perfectly valid thing to suggest in the future.
Eavolution··on Early Europeans ate seaweed for thousands of years
Beat me to it! I used to get it as a kid in Donaghadee, not sure if you can still get it there though.
Eavolution··on Automakers invented the crime of jaywalking (2015)
Pedantic but thats GB, not the UK. NI's highway code is slightly different and didn't introduce that.
Eavolution··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
I absolutely can, that's how I connect my ps4 to my uni accommodation internet as it's mschapv2 or smth the ps4 can't connect to. I know it's definitely using the wifi and not my mobile data as my data usage for the day is unchanged after I've downloaded a game.

Cheap Chinese android phone from 2020 (or maybe 2021 can't remember).

Eavolution··on Car industry pleads for delay to post-Brexit tariffs on EVs
Northern Ireland and Scottland didn't.
Eavolution··on UK Government Extends Petrol and Diesel Car Sales Until 2035
I disagree. I think electric cars are fundamentally different. If 50 people want to fill up a petrol car, they go to a petrol station with 10 pumps and they're all out in 15m because filling doesn't take long at all.

You can probably get more chargers in the same area as pumps, however it takes so much longer to charge a car that those 50 people would be there for hours.

I think the solution to electric cars is everyone charges their car when they're not using it, so lots of on street chargers and charging at home for people with a driveway.

Eavolution··on Ask HN: How to handle Asian-style “Family name first” when designing interfaces?
I as an example have 2 passports, and my name is first middle1 middle2 last.

One of my passports has my name like that, the other is first middle1 last, so even between passports its not the same, as one of them drops one of my middle names.

Eavolution··on What If All the Gasoline Cars Became Electric Vehicles?
I thought VW lied about emissions not miles to the gallon, and the numbers I've said are what my dashboard shows for avg consumption when I'm driving, they ain't the testing numbers (which do tend to be ridiculously high)
Eavolution··on Face it, self-driving cars still haven’t earned their stripes
Most driving for some people*

Most of my driving is national speed limit country/2 lane roads. Because of where I live I'm rarely on big A roads or motorways. This kind of driving has many more edge cases, for example yesterday I had to go into the other side of the road to avoid a lot of ivy hanging off a stone wall that was torn down by the wind. I'm not sure I'd trust a self driving car with that (would radars see it?)

Eavolution··on Amsterdam to use “noise cameras” against too loud cars
My 1200 petrol car is so quiet you can't actually hear the engine from within the car, and there's no sound damping under the bonnet (no top engine cover, no padding on the bonnet itself despite the mounting there for it), so petrol cars can absolutely be quiet.

I think the thing with motorbikes is everything is so much more exposed, and they rev higher in general, so the sound thing is probably a harder problem.

I am actually of the belief that motorbikes and scooters should be encouraged in cities, because they are a lot smaller, and more efficient in general than cars (so long as you don't have a massive bike), and take up a lot less space when parking. Do most people really need a 1.5 tonne car to go to work as opposed to a 200kg bike?

Eavolution··on What If All the Gasoline Cars Became Electric Vehicles?
Is 24mpg really correct? I'm in Europe driving a small hatchback and I'd typically get around 45-50mpg (UK, I know American mpg is lower, but it wouldn't be halving the figure!).

Depending on how I drive, that can be up to about 60mpg, which is where the car definitely tops out.

24mpg to me seems like madness!

Eavolution··on Bypassing YouTube video download throttling
Chubbyemu videos often have it, and James Hoffman once used it to provide an audio channel with slurping sounds (he's a coffee channel, that's not as dodgy as it sounds) and one without.
Eavolution··on Aeroflot deactivates brakes on nine aircraft, relies solely on reverse thrust
I thought V1 was the decision speed, where you must takeoff unless the plane is literally incapable of leaving the ground.

Technically I think the takeoff speed is VRotate, where the plane is rotated and actually starts to leave the ground.

If a regular russian businessman needs to get from one side of russia, to the other, what else can they do?

Russia's a big country like.

Eavolution··on 40 years ago yesterday Air Canada Flight 143 ran out of fuel mid-flight
Not everywhere in the UK. In Northern Ireland milk is sold in 1pt, but much more commonly 1L, 2L, and 3L bottles.
Eavolution··on Want fewer car accidents? Remove traffic signals and road signs (2017)
Introduce a stupid 45mph speed limit on drivers for 1 year after they've passed their test in NI. That means I could be on a motorway or big A road where people are going 70+mph, and be supposed to do 45mph.

Of course I don't do that unless I see a car that I think is a police car. I've been flashed at before for doing 45mph and find it way easier to drive at the same speed as other cars.

Eavolution··on Let the internet be grimy
Personally I prefer using kbin, that's another option. Kbin and lemmy both can communicate so it doesn't matter which you use. feddit.de and kbin.social are kbin instances.

Eavolution··on Ask HN: What EU country has the highest developer salary?
Ireland has very low corporation tax, but quite high personal tax. That's why so many major companies are here.
Eavolution··on Conjugate Acids and Bases
Even more interesting is how some chemicals (like water or amino acids) are amphoteric and act as both acids and bases, depending on what environment they are in.
Eavolution··on Volvo reveals the small, simple and inexpensive EX30 electric SUV
Literally the one thing I want is no huge screen. I don't mind a screen so long as it's not the size of a tablet, it has actual proper push buttons, and there are normal gauges for everything important. What's so hard about that?
Eavolution··on Tesla Confirms Automated Driving Systems Were Engaged During Fatal Crash
Not my car but a member of my family's car does that with the steering wheel and I hate driving it. Granted I live in the country, but I want to be able to go over the line slightly to avoid something in the road without it trying to shove me back
Eavolution··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
Another subscription. Great. The reddit client I use is brilliant (relay for reddit pro), not sure what they're doing about this but I'm not using the official client and I only use reddit on my phone. I'm really sick of subscriptions though, I'd rather just pay up front and not have another subscription
Eavolution··on Hacking my “smart” toothbrush

Eavolution··on 5G Rollout Disappointments
That makes my sub £9.00 pm (unlimited calls/texts, around 20gb data although unsure on exact amount), europe treated as the UK, seem very cheap.
Eavolution··on MSFT is forcing Outlook and Teams to open links in Edge and IT admins are angry
Granted I haven't used Chrome in years, but I find that firefox integrates remarkably well from phone to pc. The menu of open tabs on other devices is invaluable to me (although idk if Chrome has this too)
Eavolution··on The Difference Between European and American Butter
Being from Northern Ireland, I always find it fascinating that American's think kerrygold butter is fancy. It's just our standard butter here and down south.
Eavolution··on Apollo dev explains how third-party Reddit apps are affected by API changes
I have Relay Pro on Android. I really like it and didn't mind paying for it, but it ain't like I'd pay a subscription for it, and especially not if its for some neutered version. Guess this is what kills reddit for me, its been coming for a long time anyways
