Dudelander··on Providing ChatGPT to the U.S. federal workforce
Not sure if this is a real question but yes, I think Microsoft is too big to fail.
Dudelander··on Google Maps now shows the 'Gulf of America'
Like I said, loyalty test.
Dudelander··on Google Maps now shows the 'Gulf of America'
It's more or less a loyalty test. Are you going to use the correct term, or Trump's term. Which side are you on?
Dudelander··on Tesla Is Alienating the People It Needs Most: Study
Maybe in the long run but right now their stock is tanking.
Dudelander··on Tesla Is Alienating the People It Needs Most: Study
I think the myth of Elon's genius has been utterly shattered by the Path of Exile 2 debacle. Turns out faking it until you make it can take you all the way to the top.
Dudelander··on 1M people have joined Bluesky in the last day
Yes, it's basically Twitter without the paid blue checks.
Dudelander··on 1M people have joined Bluesky in the last day
The main advantages are the lack of bots (for now) and the lack of the paid blue checks. The former is a major improvement because it improves the overall quality of the tweets.
Dudelander··on AI Hype Is Cooling – New survey
I'm kind of shocked by this comment. Microsoft seems to be dominating the industry, with copilot having over 1.5 million users.
Dudelander··on The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Can Be Cleaned for $7.5B
If the presser is correct (and I am extremely skeptical), then the $7.5B cost would be trivial - even if it had to be done annually.
Dudelander··on The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Can Be Cleaned for $7.5B
Have these numbers been verified by a neutral 3rd party? They seem awfully optimistic.
Dudelander··on Z-Library admins "escape house arrest" after judge approves U.S. extradition
I must admit it is rather comfortable to have an accurate view of the world. It's much more profitable than being enmeshed in a bunch of conspiracy theories.
Dudelander··on The Great Migration from MongoDB to PostgreSQL
A fad that set back the industry by a decade.
Dudelander··on The death of a public intellectual
If it worked that way, the Gallic Wars wouldn't have happened because Caesar's account would be considered "argument from authority".
Dudelander··on The death of a public intellectual
He has been widely criticized by legal scholars for misrepresenting the Canadian Bill C-16, which extends the human rights act to cover transgendered people. Peterson, a clinical psychologist, claimed that it would compel speech.

This is probably what the article is referring to. Before the incident Peterson was a respected academic psychologist, but was widely criticized for his amateur legal analysis of C-16. He has since continued to ruin his reputation by making transphobic tweets about Elliot Page, body shaming the plus sized model Yumi Nu, climate change denial, and generally expressing right wing views on a range of issues.

Dudelander··on Bad Speech
It's called a search engineer, and this isn't left to people's own discretion because they don't have the time or inclination to make their own search engines / recommendation engines.
Dudelander··on Bad Speech
So the whole point of the article was "read a book dummies"?
Dudelander··on Bad Speech
This article is profoundly unhelpful for people who's job is to determine what speech is promoted and what speech isn't.
Dudelander··on Musk threatens to sue ADL after blaming it for X ad sales slump
The facts of that case are radically different from Musk's accusations.
Dudelander··on WHO Twitter Account Promotes “Traditional Medicine”
It basically endorses homeopathy which has been thoroughly debunked by evidence based medicine. Nothing it says is incorrect from a rigorous reading, but relying on a rigorous reading of your propaganda is no defense against spreading misinformation.
Dudelander··on Meta’s Twitter rival Threads unravels
> The problem is that it's pretty rare that you re-convert a churned user.

Pretty sure this isn't true. Reconverting a former customer is cheaper than converting new customers from an advertising perspective. I wouldn't imagine that social media customers are any different.

I will say that it is generally cheaper to keep an existing customer than to re-covert them later, but that's a separate issue.

I imagine the case here is that people downloaded threads to check it out, and then stopped using it because the network wan't as large as Twitters'.

Dudelander··on How to survive Twitter: shame, anonymity and never saying sorry
"I wish we had free speech online, except for people who try to cancel me".
Dudelander··on How to survive Twitter: shame, anonymity and never saying sorry
Complaining about someone censoring your own opinions is not anti-censorship.
Dudelander··on How to survive Twitter: shame, anonymity and never saying sorry
This woman is an anti-trans activist, and she's complain that people on Twitter called her a transphobe. She doesn't want to protect speech, she wants to censor people who disagree with her.
Dudelander··on Twitter’s Rebrand to X Could Be a Trademark Nightmare Thanks to Microsoft
That's bait.
Dudelander··on Twitter’s Rebrand to X Could Be a Trademark Nightmare Thanks to Microsoft
I think you just have to look at the individual decisions he's made. For me, I keep going back to the time he made the Twitter employees literally print out their source code. (Not send a link to github repo, he made them physically print them out.) That is not something a competent leader would have asked for.
Dudelander··on Twitter’s Rebrand to X Could Be a Trademark Nightmare Thanks to Microsoft
> Don't really like this framing of the problem - he owns a majority of voting shares, and he paid (or, rather, overpaid) mightily for that right. You can't really be "fired" from being an owner.

This is basically what people mean by "too rich to fire". I don't think anyone is suggesting that if he wasn't a stakeholder, he'd keep his job solely because he had a lot of money. I think it fair to say that, if Twitter was a publicly traded company with a board of directors, Elon likely would have been fired by now. Or, at the very least, significantly reigned in.

Dudelander··on Ask HN: So when will Twitter go the way of Digg and geocities?
I don't know about Digg or Geocities. It might go the way of cosmo.com though. By this I mean it might get taken down because it's an unprofitable privately held business with no clear path to profitability.

If it wants to remain an ad supported platform it has a significant catch-22 to overcome: it can't attract advertisers without hiring moderators, but it can't hire moderators without attracting advertisers.

Its subscription model has been unsuccessful so far, and the revenue it generated has come at a cost to the overall quality of the platform. If Twitter continues to go down the path of user payments, like adding micro-transactions for example, I could see it going the route of Everquest. Where it will stay alive indefinitely thanks to the contribution of a small group of whales, but will never be relivent in the social media landscape.

Dudelander··on Far right Twitter influencers first on Elon Musk’s monetization scheme
Ashley St Claire and Benny Johnson both got fired from center-right organisations (TPUSA and the Independent Journal Review respectivly) for being too extreme. That's literally the definition of "Far right".

Ian Miles Cheong is a climate change denier and one of the main accounts behind the trans panic. He regularly contributes to The Post Millennial.

Rogan O’Handley was one of the instigators of the January 6th riots.

Libs of Tik Tok is infamous for her anti-lgbtq propaganda.

All of the examples given in the article can be accurately described as far right.

Dudelander··on Twitter is being evicted from its Boulder office over unpaid rent
Guys everyone in your office getting kicked out by the cops is a normal part of the negotiation process. You dumb people just don't know how businesses work.
