Why not just relocate silicon valley to Pittsburgh where rents are cheaper?
Problem solved!
So much plain and simple arrogance and ignorance in this thread. Mind blowing.
14 bil year is a bargain for what this city provides.
Santa Monica had a bunch of public restrooms and you NEVER see poop on the street like on San Fran.
Here's a wiki on it. https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Not_as_bad_as
It's one of the purest most common logical fallacies used.
I'm in New Orleans. Our cities form of status is totally who you know. Money is not as big of adeal. A billionaire has less clout than the owner of a operation that designs Mardi Gras floats or the bartender that is the lead of the Krewe of Elvi.
I think that is what you would call "Soul" possibly.
After travelling to a bunch of other cities and seeing unfettered capitalism destroy communities, neighborhoods, housing markets, livability, and peoples lives..it's a pretty refreshing place to be.
On the flip side our economy is absolutely terrible.
There's no upside to entering the working world so why not just declare disability.
It enables you to build your feature and then squash the commits into one idempotent feature commit which keeps commit clutter out of the git logs.
Just keeping your branch rebased daily, one will have minimal problems even on big teams.
I personally love developing on my own branch and having the freedom to experiment without messing stuff up.
brainfuck->typescript->es6->via babel->es5->postCss plugins->sass->css->transpiled to react components->transpiled to an Angular 2 project->to webcomponents->transpiled to ArnoldC language->transpiled to a Turing complete Shopify liquid template-> commonjs and browserified->rails sprocket pipeline->then piped to /dev/null
It's not easy being a Javascript Ninja/Rockstar.
At home you become one version of yourself and people know you and treat you as such and you respond in kind. Everything becomes sort of routine to maintain the status quo.
Travel is amazing because you literally have no preconceived notions or expectations from other people so you can experiment and be different versions of yourself and no one will be the wiser.
You can learn a lot about yourself and others this way.
It's also extremely liberating.
Talk about avoiding all government censorship. lol.
Until recently America had child labor and would lynch black people. A FEDERAL judge in my hometown of New Orleans is famous for saying "We like to try our niggers before we hang them".
Human nature is human nature.
We live in a 'veneer' of civilization.
Underneath are still the same old animal instincts honed over millions of years of evolution.
Don't ever forget that. Or forget it at your peril.
In Mexico the narco terrorists pulled innocent people off of a bus and made them pit fight to the death for their amusement.

In the middle ages they would impale you on a spike so that you died slowly over days.
In Rwanda one tribe butchered 5 million people of another tribe with machetes.
An that's just examples I can think of off the top of my head.
And you have trouble believing that a few cops wouldn't let a mother comfort her child?
Passing down of beliefs and behaviors is almost more valuable than passing down money.
You're embedding positive or negative behaviors into someone's personality.
1>Passing down the belief that education is valuable
2>Passing down the belief that investing in the future is more valuable than short term spending.
etc.
Also having resources in general is a massive benefit. 1>having security allows wealthy kids to take more risks/reap more rewards.
2>More free time to learn and advance themselves
3>ability to take low paying jobs purely to make connections/build job skills
4>Status is a language that every one understands at a primitive level and so just getting more respect in general which means better promotions, better mates, etc.
You passion for being a veterinarian turns to 'just a job'.
I think doing 'what you love' is a failed premise for several reasons.
a>When you turn your passion into a job your passion becomes a job.
b>You only 'think' you love it. Your social circles have conditioned you to love a certain subject. An inner city kid is going to be more likely interested in the NBA and Rapping, than social media and solar power. Just like the average person from the middle east will be more interested in Islam than the average person from the South. (Stereotypes can be proven by statistics.)
c>You will change. As you get older think of all the new things you've fallen in love with. New passions. New interests. And the things you have fallen out of love with. I'm not convinced people are static enough to love 'one thing' for 40 years.
I think what people really want out of a career is freedom. Intellectual freedom, freedom to manage their time, prestige, respect, expertise, etc.
I think these are the things one should be pursuing instead of doing 'what you love'.
LOOKS ARE WHY WOMEN WEAR MAKEUP and mini skirts. If chastity were their test they would be doing exactly the opposite.
You're not getting turned on by porn because the woman is 'chaste'. You're getting turned on becuase she is HOT.
Looks, indicate fertility and health, and are widely know through out all of biology and the animal kingdom to be used by males to select fit mates no matter slutty and how many litters of animals the female has had. It indicates genetic fitness.
For men success is the test. It indicates accumulation of resources and ability to survive.
Plus, sex is a powerful primitive desire and no (matter what they tell you) they're all "bicycles" as you describe it, just like you would LIKE to be.
And attractive young girls are men's equivalent of the rich handsome finance studs.
If we're going to allow men to be selected for we also have to allow women to be selected for.
In the spirit of honest natural selection leaving your sagging wife and marrying your young secretary is good for humanity as a whole.
