DoodahMan··on Big Pharma hiked the price of 775 drugs this year so far: Report
bets on how much attention this story gets? or do we only get mad when the likes of Shkreli does the same and trolls about it?
DoodahMan··on A man who used music to try to lure aliens to earth (2020)
truthfully if i was not of this world and heard Fela Kuti being broadcasted into the cosmos i'd be coaxed into coming to Earth. those are some damn good vibrations!
DoodahMan··on Ask HN: How would you take care of your mental well-being?
i'd like to get back into treatment but it seems futile at the moment. i've been trying to find treatment for many months to no avail. one receptionist laughed at me even - that was fun. i'm dealing with untreated bipolar2 and various anxiety disorders at the moment. it makes reaching out difficult, but i've been trying my best.

i prefer a long-term plan with the same care provider. i need some time to warm up to a provider. on-demand and remote doesn't mesh with me at all. i have the means; the problem is availability. since the pandemic things seem to be slammed...

in the mean time i've been trying to stay busy with my personal software projects. i'm planning to hike and exercise more, improve my diet, and cut back on my drinking. white-knuckling bp2 ain't no fun, i cycle quickly. hence the drink. but i know that is but a band-aid; a sometimes destructive band-aid at that. religion, stoicism, friends/family, etc alone ain't going "fix" me. unfortunately i need medication for life or my life falls apart.

i wish anyone else struggling nothing but peace. much love. ya ain't alone.

healthcare workers during the pandemic come to mind.
DoodahMan··on Ibogaine banishes PTSD, small study finds
i cannot express how hopeful i am that this class of medicines and therapy are going to help so many people. i do think treating vets/first responders will break the dam open. i'm very keen to see where the novel psychs go - those without "the trip" but with the healing factor. i believe that will be key for the masses, i'm not sure 'normies' want to trip for 8-12 hours or more. i know this is a bit controversial to say in the psych community. the psych biotech sector is set to get quite interesting this year i reckon. i expect FDA approval for MDMA at a minimum. much love to anyone struggling mentally. exciting times IMO.
DoodahMan··on Asking people to "do the research" on fake news makes it more believable
"#1 killer of kids" is a good example of common misinformation you'll hear when the gun debate pops up again. boy do folks like parroting that one - from randoms on the internet, to the politicians, to the media.
DoodahMan··on Social media companies made $11B in US ad revenue from minors, study finds
all you can do really is to teach to beware. reckon doing so won't just help with ads, but the internet in general. that "cute gal" messaging you may just be looking to butcher a pig.
DoodahMan··on $500 a day to pretend to be a model: The big business behind OnlyFans 'chatters'
i've been considering training some kind of LLM for this job. it's a fun business.. i got started in it with chatbots on AOL.
DoodahMan··on Several piracy-related arrests spark fears of high-level crackdown
crack down all ya want, the scene will continue. see comments here as to why. no apologies here for flying the jolly roger. reckon piracy is a response to shit business practices. i'm not jumping through VPN hoops to watch what i want to. i'm not dealing with content being removed for whatever reason. feels like it's even worse in the sports arena. local blackouts etc. bunch of nonsense. now where's my rum?
DoodahMan··on The fake browser update scam gets a makeover
you can do the same with XMR. for example Mullvad accepts XMR and BTC.
DoodahMan··on The fake browser update scam gets a makeover
i like the Gridless Compute [0][1] project. check them out. crypto is not all just crime and environmental destruction IMO.

DoodahMan··on Bill Gates demonstrates Visual Basic (1991) [video]
likewise man. for me it started with Gorillas.bas and a curiosity of what all this text meant and how it pertained to throwing bananas across a skyline. that later turned into VB3 and AOL. the rest is history. what a fun time in nerdy history. thanks Stratoscope, thanks Steve Case!
DoodahMan··on Psytrance Guide
oh man do i love to see psytrance pop up on HN! opened this while wearing my Shpongle hoodie from 2006, hah! i've been hooked ever since i first heard Astral Projection in the early 00's, though i stopped listening as much when full-on took over, when IM "sold out", when the music became a little lifeless for lack of better wording. there is only one other genre of music that gives me the same feelings of freedom, exploration, and adventure as psytrance: jam bands like the Dead, Phish, etc. which isn't strange if you think about the history of goa/psytrance, where such psychedelic rock was spun for the hippies before this other-worldy beep boop stuff was created. reckon it all comes from the same source, cut from the same cloth.

i miss isratrance. psyshop. i miss going to shows in the forest for a weekend and the freedom of it all. walk around naked if you want, it's nothing but love!

i'm going to share some artists and songs that i haven't seen listed yet from some other sub-genres of this weird music:

- Psykovsky (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onYzuQUmQzo) caution: this one is relentless!

- Eat Static (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzCjkXiVAdM)

- Planet B.E.N (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BadJg0pBwU0)

- Hux Flux (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIO9DFmAOYs)

- Derango (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fw7meaL83Q)

- Etnica (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A47EaYXcgnk)

- The Antidote (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUf6aYUW3H4)

... man this post sent me back to high school. thank you for the nostalgia trip! i really wish the parties near me were still happening. when isratrance died i lost touch with the scene. everyone moved to facebook. i really, really miss it. i had a lot of fun collaborating with folks on isra, bouncing project files and stems back and forth. especially the swedes, those crazy forest folks :) reckon this winter i should dust off the gear. take care HN & much love.

DoodahMan··on For Online Disinformation and Hate, X Marks the Spot
i'm still baffled when folks say things like "It was never hard to find hate and disinformation online, but it’s been much harder to avoid on X (formerly known as Twitter) since Elon Musk bought the platform in July of 2022". i still use twitter. i have to specifically make an effort to find folks like neo nazis and racists. they don't pop up in my feed. they are not recommended to me. i don't see them in the replies to folks i follow. i get the feeling folks who can't seem to get away from hate speech probably consume political/cultural content exclusively.

"And if they won’t? We can make them. We can demand that our lawmakers pass policies that force companies to provide healthy and safe social media spaces where people can interact well and have real conversations." yuck. just say no to a Ministry of Truth.

DoodahMan··on Robbie Robertson has died
Played The Band's Academy of Music performance [0] last night when I got the news. It's right up there with The Last Waltz. Great and timeless music. Hell some of my favorite Grateful Dead performances were covers of his music. RIP Robbie. Enjoy your weekends fellow heady folks (~);)

DoodahMan··on Is technical analysis just stock market astrology?
Something to be said about playing in pockets of the market those fat cats stay away from due to lack of the liquidity needed, market cap constraints, etc. There it can be a more level playing field for us minnows.
DoodahMan··on Is technical analysis just stock market astrology?
I'm not aware of any way to predict a black swan, TA or otherwise. Sometimes shit just happens and no one sees it coming.
DoodahMan··on Why did it take psychedelics so long to become popular?
It wasn't always this easy to get psychedelics I'd say. Previously much of the LSD in America flowed from large labs (which were busted) and would get distributed throughout the country through scenes like jambands (eg: the Dead, Phish). Throw in a healthy amount of War on Drugs/D.A.R.E propaganda. Things dried up for a bit. These days however acquiring psychedelics can be as easy as a few clicks of a mouse and some crypto.

I also noticed the spike on the graph in 2019. That's when Pollan's "How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence" book came out and it seems to have got quite popular. In this time the push for psychedelic-assisted therapy began in earnest.

I'd say psychedelics are becoming more popular these days because the old stigma about them is waning, mainstream acceptance is increasing, and supply is readily available. It's trivial to grow mushrooms or extract DMT.

I fully expect to see psychedelic-assisted therapy become an accepted form of treatment in my lifetime. Few things in America these days bring the left and right (AOC, Crenshaw, Gaetz, etc) together, but psychedelics are one that does. Psychedelics ain't just for hippies to melt into the music anymore.
