Dobbs··on Constitutional Right to Install Bulletproof Glass?
"Most" is a bit of a stretch. Depending upon the year it is anywhere from 45% to 68%, most years it is right on the 50% marker.

Additionally the NRA gets lots of money from corporations and big ticket donors. This seems to typically be around 30% of their income. While a smaller amount overall, this has an oversized weight as one big ticket donor coming and complaining the fear of them taking their money and going home is a lot scarier than a normal membership fee.

Bugs in the anti-cheating software, who knows if it was enabled or not on the testers computers.
Dobbs··on Git ignores .gitignore with .gitignore in .gitignore
You don’t have to be at a tech startup to have things like CI and/or code review platforms.
Dobbs··on Git ignores .gitignore with .gitignore in .gitignore
Additionally git supports a global git ignore.

    $ git config --global core.excludesfile ~/.gitignore
Then you can put all the standard things you want to ignore into it:

    $ cat ~/.gitignore
    .DS_Store
    ./drafts/
    *.swp
And it will apply to all git commands on your computer.
Dobbs··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
I've was at a company that had an absentee CEO. One who would swoop in every few months and make strong declarations about direction, product, and so on; but was otherwise never there. It was a nightmare. We suffered constantly from his eccentrics, it constantly hurt our product, and destroyed morale and the ability to feel like you had no power over your work.
Dobbs··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
If resources are there then yes I definitely agree. It makes a major difference in quality of life, particularly for myself and my partner who both struggle with ADHD.
Dobbs··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
If you look around for things about "emotional labor" or "unpaid labor".

For example I found this from around 2014, it isn't strictly about dual income households, but there is data out there for that:

> Around the world, women spend two to ten times more time on unpaid care work than men.

Source: https://www.oecd.org/Dev/Development-Gender/Unpaid_Care_Work...

Dobbs··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
It isn't just about respect. It is about you leaving work for your partner to do even though you could have done it yourself. This is about emotional labour and the uneven divide of household jobs.
Dobbs··on A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem
This isn't about the dishes. The dishes are just a symptom of the unequal divide of emotional labour in most relationships. Even in relationships where both parents work full time more often than not the majority of the mental and physical burden of running the house tends to fall onto the woman. Of course this isn't an absolute, but it does tend to hold true.

You can see this at the outbreak of COVID where many women had to step back from jobs because they suddenly had a massively increased load of child care that by default fell onto their shoulders.

The article is about someone coming to the realization of the ugly situation they are putting their spouse into, one that is extremely common. Don't try and devalue that by turning it into a "both sides" debacle.

Dobbs··on Ask HN: How do I develop focus?
Some people find early hours to be very productive, some people find noon hours to be really productive, and finally some people find evening hours to be really productive. What works for you won't necessarily work for everyone else and pretending otherwise is harmful to all who don't fit your life/body/etc.

Yes unified memory already exists it isn't some newfangled thing. That said Apple is the only modern consumer brand doing it for a Laptop/Desktop. It definitely has some downsides, but it also does have some upsides.
Dobbs··on “O, so sorry. I need more time. my country defending Russian invasion”
I have pretty extreme ADHD. It is very very easy for something like a ticket to just fall out of my mind and therefore not get followed up on. Polite (very important) and infrequent requests for updates aren't bad, they can be extremely important to keeping things moving forward, both for myself and many others.
Dobbs··on The Factorio Mindset
A lot of recent changes to the game have been quality of life changes to make it easier to align things.
Dobbs··on Selecting a programming language can be a form of premature optimization
> Say I want to add two numbers and ship it to prod. In Python, that’s one line and an scp.

This example ignores what is actually involved in production code. Yes there is a compile step involved in things like Java. In python you have to manage your dependencies on the deployment box.

In Java (minus the runtime), Go, Rust, etc they all support managing dependencies on the client side. In my experience the messiness of that in python and ruby far outstrips the complexities of a compile step in the makefile or CI pipeline.

We also use contracting services for things like janitors here. The startup I used to work for didn't need dedicated cleaners, we needed maybe 1/4th of a dedicated cleaner. So we had an external service that paid to have someone come in and take care of all the things. But they in turn worked for a company that ensured they had all these things. So the costs were passed onto us, but only a fraction of it.

As for pensions it depends a lot on the specifics of the company. There are state run pensions here in the NL. Additionally you have some that unions, or the government have negotiated industry wide. So if you are involved in hospitality, restaurants, and similar then there is a special pension that automatically gets paid into every month. I don't really know the specifics because I'm not part of said pension.

The state pension is somewhere between 700 (each if in a couple) or 1100 (if single) a month. This is then supplemented by private pensions which are afaik basically required to be offered by all companies, even if they aren't created equally, and as mentioned above there are special industry or union pensions. Then add in things like socialized housing (which is much nicer than in the US or UK), and the lack of need for a car here and you can get by much more easily.

On one hand if you can't afford to pay your employees and provide them basic benefits like paid time off, sick leave etc, then you don't deserve to be in business.

It of course depends on the country how things are implemented, but here there is a central insurance fund that all employees pay into. Then when an employee needs to take time off for parental leave the company applies to the fund and the fund covers the expenses. The company can then choose to pay out more than the fund does, or not. As is normal for benefits. This means though that every employee has a right to at least 16 weeks of leave at somewhere between 70-100% of pay. Details change the specifics.

Healthcare has little to nothing to do with companies. Technically you can sometimes get a discount by applying to a group scheme through your work, but mostly it is done independently. It costs about €170 a month a person. Depending upon how much you earn you can get a subsidy from the government for up to 100% of your monthly expense. That €170 covers most things you could need healthcare wise, although somethings aren't covered unless you buy addons, for example eyeglasses. Everyone is required to have health insurance.

Why wouldn't a janitor be deserving of these things? They work hard, their job is essential for the running of other businesses, and most of all they are humans too.
Dobbs··on Financial innovations brought by technology
Tikkie, iDeal, and IBAN transfers (within the country) are essentially instant. Additionally they are universally supported by all mainstream banks.
Dobbs··on Financial innovations brought by technology
But Monzo isn’t a thing that 99% of the country has access too. Tikkie and iDeal are. Every mainstream bank here supports them and are part of the organisations that manage them. Well technically tikkie is ABN AMRO but it is built on the same underlying infra so it works for all the mainstream banks.
Dobbs··on Financial innovations brought by technology
> True innovation would be more control over your money. For example, you could have a bank account with $100 in it, and you allocate dollars $0-50 to be "online" money. This can mean different things, but for the sake of example let's say that means that you can go to https://bank.com/user/endisneigh and if I give you a special code that I create you can take an amount of money directly from my bank account, specified by the code. No need to use something like stripe.

This is a thing in the Netherlands, between iDeal / Tikkie / and bank transfers. iDeal is used for payments online, it depends a tiny bit on your bank but you get a QR code and you scan it, it then does a direct bank payment from your bank to their account.

Tikkie is similar but is p2p. I can create a link or a QR code and send it to people. They can then use the link or QR code and send me money. Alternatively you can just use my account number (an IBAN printed on the card) and just transfer money.

Dobbs··on Go 1.18 will embed source version information into binaries
This is really useful. Almost every project I’ve worked on has had to have a build script in part to inject this info so it being a first class feature makes life just that much easier.

Dobbs··on France Recalls Its Ambassadors to the U.S. and Australia over a Submarine Deal
Totally agree, if you want proof of the paradox of tolerance look around HN. In the sake of being tolerant to misogynistic, homophobic, racist, and transphobic posts and comments it has chased away many people leaving more and more the ugliness behind.

Most women, and trans people I know despise and avoid the site at this point. All you have to do is look at the comments any time something even tangentially related to women’s experiences in tech or when tech impacts women to see it.

Dobbs··on France Recalls Its Ambassadors to the U.S. and Australia over a Submarine Deal
You do know the messy pull out of Afghanistan was a peace deal agreed to by prior governments (without the consent of the Aphgani government no less) could they have done better, absolutely but the way you are framing it is hardly unbiased.

As for countries deciding to not rely upon America, that has long been a desire, but the previous administration drove it home like a stake through the heart. Having lived outside of the US for most of the last five years I can’t fully express how far the US has fallen in the eyes of the world, and just how much of a joke we are these days.

Dobbs··on France Recalls Its Ambassadors to the U.S. and Australia over a Submarine Deal
Well I mean Australia and the USA could not go behind Frances back to strike a deal which apparently causes Australia to back out of a deal it has with France?
Dobbs··on Doctors and pharmacists ramp up calls for Americans to stop using ivermectin
And from what a doctor told me most of those studies refuse to recall themselves after purposefully and heavily weighting a study that has been recalled for blatantly falsifying data and lying about the math.

Additionally horse ivermectin is a big part of the problem. People are literally going to vets and getting horse ivermectin and taking it. So it isn’t the media that is conflating them. At least not the so called “leftist media”. It is idiots who insist on lying about its effectiveness.

I was under the impression that `github.com/google` was largely projects being worked on by googlers where the code is owned by google, but the code isn't always being used by google. Say 20% time work, side projects built using google resources, etc.
