DieBruderBauer··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (November 2024)

  Location: Irvine, California
  Remote: Preferred.
  Willing to relocate: Yes.
  Technologies: Python, C, C++
  Résumé/CV: www.linkedin.com/in/david-k-a75074148
  Email: dbkarimi@outlook.com
To Whom It May Concern: My name is Dave and I’m here to participate in (and perfect) the art of technical writing.

You see, I have vast experience in technical writing, technical support, and sales – from hungry startups looking to change the game to companies as big and established as Apple looking to endlessly craft perfection.

I want to join your team’s technical writing and editing team.

I can take your technical writing, and I can take it higher. I have a lofty understanding of Apple’s core values precisely because defense and cybersecurity runs in my family. My father worked for Boeing as an Aerospace engineer for almost 20+ years and his lessons and values are deeply instilled in me – and that shows up in my work, too.

I’m not just any kind of writer, either: I am a technical writer with an A.S. in Computer Science, a B.A. in Philosophy (and Pre-Med to boot) and I’m also published.

This all to say that I have the experience and the aptitude to communicate technically; I received a perfect score on the SAT Writing/Essay examination (an “8” which places me in the 98th – 99th percentile of test takers in the good old US of A).

I am looking forward to professionally articulating and artfully transforming your company’s values into analytical, intrepid and pertinent technical writing — with a good eye for proofreading, editing and beyond.

Sincerely yours,

Dave Karimi

DieBruderBauer··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
Sapolsky's cartoonish mis-characterization of Schizophrenia and people afflicted with Schizophrenia is a joke and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. His widely-cited and (unfortunately) popular lecture on YouTube is proof positive that Sapolsky is an imposter and isn't truly interested in the rigors of scientific reasoning. If you want real cutting-edge Schizophrenia research it's best left to those on the front line in hospitals and Ivory Towers. Not armchair yahoos like Sapolsky who get a laugh off the backs of people suffering. He's done a great disservice to those who are afflicted with Schizophrenia. Much better than his rambling lecture is a TED talk given by Bethany Yeiser. Let's put a human face on Schizophrenia, shouldn't we?
DieBruderBauer··on Training AI to Play Pokemon with Reinforcement Learning [video]
The following questions arose to me after watching this poignant video...

1.) Does the AI "know" it's beating the game?

2.) Why can 10 y.o. me know how to progress in the game without taking countless hours?

3.) Wasn't there a Twitch channel that was broadcasting the A.I. beating Pokemon Red?

4.) Is there any correlation between the A.I. used here and the one used by Deep Blue in Chess?

DieBruderBauer··on Reddit to Block Users from Opting Out of Personalized Ads
Has Reddit forgotten the history of oft-fabled failed sites like Digg?
DieBruderBauer··on Apple has what it needs to launch its own Google replacement
I'd argue -- for my pedestrian use cases -- that Apple Maps is superior to Google Maps. UI is one reason.
DieBruderBauer··on iOS 17 is available today
Really having fun with the contacts poster as I try to complete all of my close friend's pictures.
DieBruderBauer··on Microsoft Works
The one with the cow spots on the box? Ah…good times!
DieBruderBauer··on Microsoft is killing WordPad in Windows
> - Disk space manager - graphically show where my diskspace went; allow me to find and delete large files

Try WinDirStat.

DieBruderBauer··on Switching from Chrome to Firefox
Biggest feature for me? Ability to disable efficiency mode which is - by default - on in Windows 11 and which cripples my plethora of open tabs.
DieBruderBauer··on Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus
Another great book to read (which I read in college as a Philosophy major) is Timothy Williamson's Vagueness ...a brilliant magnum opus.
DieBruderBauer··on America’s largest tool company couldn’t make a wrench in America
The response is always: "Oh, well, we're not making enough profit to justify staying open." Are you serious? It's greed manifest at sociopathic levels.
DieBruderBauer··on Do painters subconsciously paint themselves into their work?
I would be surprised if they _didn't_ paint themselves into their work.

Example: Van Gogh _must have_ transferred his neuroses into his work. Without question.

DieBruderBauer··on Google cuts office space in Bay Area by more than a million square feet
1st page of most search results is inundated with irrelevant ads. Pitiful. And yes, a small minority know about and actively use uBlock Origin. But that doesn’t mean the core functionality and purpose of Google search isn’t tainted. The rotting and decay has already manifested itself in ugly ways.
DieBruderBauer··on The planning of U.S. physician shortages (2020)
discriminatory MCATs, brutal STEPS, insane Pre-Med curriculum, and more nonsense designed to cater to white elites who gamed the educational system and less to those who are genuinely trying to help the disenfranchised, unremembered, diverse and more.

Hopefully one day, we'll make it as easy to become a doctor as it is to -- say -- become an Engineer.

DieBruderBauer··on English in the Real World
You can pull Strunk's from my cold, dead hands.
DieBruderBauer··on Nvidia AI GPU Chip Prices Increase by 40%, Shortages Expected To Dec
Can't tell if this is a fluff piece or a genuine analysis of market trends. Either way, I'm sipping tea with my 3090.
DieBruderBauer··on Steve Ballmer did not write the text for the blue screen of death
Chen is a marvelous writer. Punchy sentences replete with wisdom.
DieBruderBauer··on Why AI Will Never Rival Human Creativity
To piggyback off your point, any sufficiently capable AI (not what we have now) would easily squash whatever humans create simply because it would be able to transcend existence and have a consciousness of its own. His arguments straw man the AI, in essence.
DieBruderBauer··on New York Times to Get Around $100M from Google over Three Years
I'm happy for the Gray Lady, honestly, and hope that it continues to thrive on the internets. We hunger for a strong 4th estate. We need it. I am not going get my news from a fringe blog. I need news from an outlet with seasoned reputation, wide reach and authority. And this is coming from someone who doesn't even have a subscription. Hah!
DieBruderBauer··on The future of cars may be self-driving EVs gossiping about their humans traffic
I know this might sound weird, but my dream would be having an AI -- instead of gossiping about humans traffic -- communicate with other driver-system-cars in the world in some giant unified "communication program" that allows all cars to drive in tandem, in sync and on time.

It would be revolutionary, yes, but definitely worth it in the end when we make driverless cars a real reality. Ideally it would be governed and maintained and spear-headed by the Gov't. Nationalizing or Globalizing it would be a top priority everyone invests in.

Am I crazy?

DieBruderBauer··on Is there such a thing as an addictive personality?
IMHO I believe that addiction is hard-coded in our DNA and can be a sort of coping mechanism; or "modus operandi" for work, you might say.

Take Tobacco for example. It's been around since circa 1400 BC ...how can you compete with over a millenia of evolution with humans and general use? We have to face facts and accept that we are prone to mind-altering, addictive substances and that's what makes us uniquely human.

Whether it's the coffee in the morning, Coca leaf tea for lunch or Marijuana...

We need our fix.

Sorry.

PS: And to those claiming they live puritanically I disagree. Endorphins are addictive, too.

DieBruderBauer··on Shamanism is Britain’s fastest-growing religion
Most of them came from Iran and India however…
DieBruderBauer··on Some Were Meant for C – The Endurance of an Unmanageable Language (2017) [pdf]
I hated learning/using C. Once I was introduced to C++, it was like a breath of fresh air. Sure, at lot of it stylistic in nature. But those frameworks matter. They really do.
DieBruderBauer··on I made a website for lonely people, and got >100 people to log their locations
So stoked for this. Long live bubblic!
DieBruderBauer··on Macroeconomic changes have made it impossible for me to want to pay you
>And suddenly all your salaries and dental work hang like millstones chafing the supple neck of my stock compensation package.

Oof. This guy knows how to write. And he's funny to boot! May consider adding my name to his Patreon list...

DieBruderBauer··on When Truman Capote’s lies caught up with him
The movie is beyond racist. If you don't believe me just watch it. You don't even need to be an identitarian to see it's horrifically outdated.
DieBruderBauer··on Mathematicians roll dice and get rock-paper-scissors
I wonder what the implications are for “intransitive” dice and Casino-level gambling potential. Wonderful article.
DieBruderBauer··on So Good They Can't Lay You Off
M$FT laid off 10K workers while it boasted record-breaking profits. Sure they'll try to justify it. Doens't make it _not_ obscene.
DieBruderBauer··on Stop Calling Everything AI, Machine-Learning Pioneer Says (2021)
AI should be synonymous with machine sentience IMHO - anything less is corporate advertising.
