Or we need to stop using words like fascism, tyranny, racist just because someone disagrees with us. That shift to cooler more informative language is just as difficult for educated people. Even on HN, so many threads devolve into Godwin’s law. I will say that one exception is education about human cognition. Trying to reason without a strong grasp of our own psychology and good ways of framing epistemological problems is like writing software without regard to hardware. Useful to some extent but prone to unforseen gotchas.
It’s almost as if education is a proxy for being a social conformist. But people still think school cures groupthink. It does the opposite by definition.
It certainly looks much different from what we would historically label coup attempt. Usually a coup has to at least be theoretically possible. It also would seem to require some level coordination. I have yet to see evidence of that. I really do believe that some of the protestors might have been there to peacefully protest, not overthrow the American government. Ymmv
It would be silly to not treat the suicide as a consequence of the situation. Either a head injury or simple psychological stress. He lost colleagues at the very least he should have had access to better mental health resources.
And if he was arrested prior that indicates some awareness in advance of what might have unfolded. I’m probably alone in the opinion that it shouldn’t have been given the go ahead, especially amidst a pandemic. Protests seem unreasonably dangerous in today’s world.
“Sometimes it feels China is going through the same stages of history Europe went through over centuries but at breakneck speed.”
A dangerously ethnocentric perspective.
The reason we don’t have masks is because we’ve gone all in on China and lost our manufacturing base. If you think this happened in the past 3 years, you have to ignore all data and pretend history doesn’t exist.
Only correct you to say not about making the government look weak, it’s about the ego of the persons who are in leadership in those government organizations. Entirely about people and their careers and vanities and not so much about the government which belongs to us voters.
No mention of peloton? The big problem is the umbrella of “tech stocks” includes an increasingly diverse set of companies that have little in common. FANGs are an example. Movies, advertising, consumer electronics, online retail, but we talk of “tech” stocks being too high or low as a group. Microsoft is not peloton. Amazon is not zoom.
You are counting 2 year olds in the denominator. IRC and Usenet were the internet. If you used a computer you used these. But yes, computers were less common then, especially amongst two year olds.
The public are only given a reflection of the candidate and even that is mediated by the media. Why worry about being accountable when you can spin the truth to suit your party agenda while half the media or more go merrily along with it. The public don’t see truth surrounding our leadership but a reflection that’s often far removed from reality. And it’s been this way since the beginning.
I wouldn’t assume he doesn’t care. He is human don’t forget. I do wonder how much the tougher stance towards China is specific to this administration. Can we know that a different administration would not have acted similarly. Maybe not the willingness to increase taxes on trade quite so aggressively, which is odd coming from a republican but the results have been encouraging with the American economy hitting record highs despite his much vilified trade war.
If you like literature then focus on lyrics. The country genre, folk and rap can be appreciated from a literary angle if you can’t hear well or recognize intervals or anything. If you like movies, try on some musicals and then wade into opera. The lines between the thee areas op mentions are somewhat artificial. You can spend more time reading about music than listening, and that still counts as enjoying music.
There are simply more Chinese so brain drain will be more pronounced. But I would also speculate that a larger percentage of Vietnamese are second generation or more. Very true in little Saigon. Poor Vietnamese who were born in the USA live in east San Jose, Chinese live in Cupertino. Very different levels of privilege.
As with everything related to the pandemic, it kills the smaller competitors making those who will survive, schools like Stanford, Harvard, businesses like apple and google, have an even greater market dominance than before.
It seems like anybody familiar with the history of the profession would be wise to not so easily “accept treatment.” But then again, even insiders like Jordan Peterson will “accept treatment” that nearly kills them. The hubris isn’t unique to any one branch of medicine, but consider that not very long ago shock treatment for homosexuals was the accepted treatment. That should give you pause if nothing else.
It was all middle ground strategy from day one. The national lockdown was timed to the nyc wave and that was a probably a mistake depending on how you view the purpose of the lockdown. If it was to flatten the curve, outside of nyc, we did too much too soon and are now reaping the effects of “precaution fatigue.” It’s a marathon rather than a sprint, but each region, has its own race to run on it’s own timeline, it’s own demographic and medical infrastructure factors.
