DataWorker··on National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence's Final Report
They fund the universities through debt in the form of student loans. The schools then funnel indebted graduates desperate for financial security into various industries where their human capital is securitized. You can call that laissez-faire, but I see a lot of similarities with China’s top down system and predict those similarities to increase as we are forced to compete with China more directly.
DataWorker··on On the Experience of Being Poor-Ish, for People Who Aren't
Homelessness is obviously increasing though it’s difficult to measure with precision. Homelessness is worse than poverty and homeless aren’t even counted in official poverty calculations. The census can’t sample them.
DataWorker··on On the Experience of Being Poor-Ish, for People Who Aren't
Many live in daily terror of becoming homeless or worse. I feel like social isolation matters more than wealth in making people feel secure. Many homeless people had money, good jobs, education, but most lacked community. Some say they find a family on the streets, for better or worse. It’s not all social, neither is it all financial.
DataWorker··on Are You Trading or Gambling?
Your point is that everyone who buys or sells assets is implicitly amoral? That seems a bit extreme though you are not the first to say it. One wonders how you can escape such condemnation yourself. Everything is a marketplace in some sense.
DataWorker··on Facebook is pushing back on Apple’s new iPhone privacy rules
Anybody that doesn’t know the code their device is running is a fool to trust it by default. Even knowing the code well, devices are compromised all the time. Yours seems like the lone sane opinion here.
DataWorker··on Highest rates of teen bullying are between friends and friends-of-friends: study
Packs behave as packs.
DataWorker··on Ask HN: What websites do you visit every day?
Nobody else said Wikipedia or yahoo finance, so I will.
DataWorker··on What I Worked On
Like stocks, you can buy ideas “low” and sell them “high.” Some ideas are cyclical too, AI, mainframes/cloud, etc... And this extends beyond tech for instance “equity” is currently hot but that may be short lived which is unfortunate.
DataWorker··on “Silicon Valley’s Safe Space” has misinformed readers
False flag down votes are real too.
DataWorker··on The Vaccine Had to Be Used. He Used It. He Was Fired
“ At least it goes back into the economy. ”

Actually no, at least 40 billion went to a Nigerian scammer group. That’s a national security issue and overrides concerns about charity and equity. It’s an existential threat.

DataWorker··on Illegal CFC emissions have stopped since scientists raised alarm
“carbon-taxation bloc”

This will be labeled imperialism with shades of white supremacy.

DataWorker··on The Vaccine Had to Be Used. He Used It. He Was Fired
Billions in unemployment fraud last year means billions in government services that will not b we going to help people that really desperately need help.
DataWorker··on Reddit valued at $6B on a $250M round
Reddit is a net negative for the internet. Facebook isn’t wonderful but at least it’s better for society, and less dishonest to its users than Reddit.
DataWorker··on Robinhood sued by family of stock trader who killed himself
Or it could make them less cautious about taking on large debt.
DataWorker··on How normal people deployed facial recognition on Capitol Hill protesters
Aaron Schwartz comes to mind. Move beyond anecdotes. There are libraries full of books on this very subject, the experiences of all the people you know not withstanding. Consider there once were witch trials, not so long ago.
DataWorker··on The war on disinformation is a war on dissent
Education isn’t an answer. It’s good and we should as a society optimize for it, but it’s vastly overrated. There will always be cognitive differentials. Educated people are easily duped by uneducated conmen and putting people in a classroom for more of their young adulthood won’t change that much at all. And don’t get me started about “re-education” camps. It’s great to have an abstract one size fits all cure for the ills of society, but “education” is not the panacea people like to pretend it to be.
DataWorker··on The war on disinformation is a war on dissent
Masks yes. Or “travel bans don’t work.” The official response from the ministry of truth appears to depend on who it is that institutes them. If it’s a president that happens to increase WHO funding, as Biden has, there’s not much of any dissent at all.
DataWorker··on The war on disinformation is a war on dissent
Yes, I was banned “for spreading disinformation”from a popular online forum for suggesting mask wearing could be helpful. The authorities at the time were fighting “disinformation” that masks work. A few weeks later I’m sure the same mods were banning people for saying the opposite.
DataWorker··on How to Win at the Stock Market by Being Lazy
Tina. Real estate, bonds, cash. Buying companies while state run capitalism in the east cold wars against American mega corporations like apple, with a neoliberal pro-trade administration, it should be easy to see why equities are a popular choice.
DataWorker··on How to Win at the Stock Market by Being Lazy
And if that stops being true, it probably won’t happen suddenly. Sp500 with a trailing stop seems like easy mode, until ww3 or some other sudden drop but there are circuit breakers for that. What could do more damage than global sars pandemic?
DataWorker··on AMC, GameStop Give Hedge Fund Mudrick Capital $200M in Gains
And trying to stop bad stock tips on the internet is the ultimate fools errand.
DataWorker··on [dead]
I think it is but help me understand the counter argument. Why and how would they lie about the death toll?
DataWorker··on How normal people deployed facial recognition on Capitol Hill protesters
I hope you never experience America’s “due process.”

You thinking highlights your own inexperience. The system idd as heavily flawed and often makes mistakes. Many convictions are eventually thrown out. And that’s the very imperfect justice system. Don’t get me started on very imperfect software or data management.

DataWorker··on How normal people deployed facial recognition on Capitol Hill protesters
I’m more interested in why. Internet vigilantism isn’t a surprise, but when it’s done to defend the establishment against populism it seems wholly unprecedented.
DataWorker··on No, WallStreetBets isn’t robbing Wall Street to help the little guy
This is simply false reporting. The play had a everything to do with Ryan Cohen. Arstechnica is long since being credible. They’re owned by conde naste and it shows.

DataWorker··on Air pollution linked to higher risk of irreversible sight loss
I’d argue that we are the polluters and we are the people who pay the medical costs. It’s up to us. And lobbying for more regulation is mostly cope; feels good but at most achieves maybe second order effects. The frog boil continues.
DataWorker··on Assessing Mandatory Lockdowns and Business Closure Effects on Spread of Covid-19
Legal precedent is a hell of a drug.
DataWorker··on Twitter locks account of China's US embassy over its defence of Xinjiang policy
Game theory comes into play. If we have to compete with China then we can predict both nations copy each other. State level intervention in corporations, censorship in the name of public safety, maybe even re-education camps if some of the younger congresspeople had their way. We become more like our rivals when we compete with them.
DataWorker··on Anthony Levandowski Pardoned
This really undermines trust.
