That's a great question. They expanded it a bit on their "SUMMARY CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL DATA AND OTHER DATA" section.

Their operating expenses are divided in 3: Research and development, Sales and marketing and General and administrative.

They also describe a bit the evolution of these under the Risk Section, beneath "We have a history of net losses, we anticipate increasing operating expenses in the future, and we may not be able to achieve and, if achieved, maintain profitability."

DanielRibeiro··on Google proposes changes to Chromium which would disable uBlock Origin
I really like the point the uBlock maintainer's make:

"Extensions act on behalf of users, they add capabilities to a user agent, and deprecating the blocking ability of the webRequest API will essentially decrease the level of user agency in Chromium, to the benefit of web sites which obviously would be happy to have the last word in what resources their pages can fetch/execute/render."

There is a game in development that uses these ideas too, and is aptly called Manifold Garden:

It is a pretty neat trick. Kinda hard to Google for though. Here is the bash manual page on it: https://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/html_node/Pipelines...

DanielRibeiro··on A 2017 Nobel laureate says he left science because he ran out of money
That's a great story! I found a book describing the story of Douglas Prasher in more detail: https://books.google.com/books?id=L2zDBAAAQBAJ&pg=PA18&lpg=P...

This is also told on his wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Prasher

On the bright side, it seems he returned to Scientific Research: In June 2010, Prasher was finally able to return to science, working for Streamline Automation in Huntsville until December 2011, and then from 2012 to 2015 in Tsien's lab at the University of California in San Diego

Thanks for your post. I loved your list of accomplishments: it looks great and you all should be proud!

It sucks to be shutting down your group. If things don't turn around (who knows the power of a blog post), good luck on your next efforts. Whatever it is, I'll be looking forward to it :)

Thanks for sharing. This is also a nice answer to the MU puzzle, mentioned at the end of the article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MU_puzzle
DanielRibeiro··on Parsing JSON is a Minefield
Wow! This was a great practical analysis of existing implementations, besides a great technical overview of the spec(s). Thanks for open sourcing the analysis code[1], and for the extended results[2]

Xcode 8 is more stable for swift these days.
DanielRibeiro··on Sam Altman’s Manifest Destiny
Agreed. This a very long and well written article. It does have some very heartbreaking, personal stories too:

One of Altman’s co-founders at Loopt, Nick Sivo, was also his boyfriend; the two dated for nine years, but after the company sold they broke up. “I thought I was going to marry him—very in love with him,” Altman said

That's a great idea dang!

I'd say to just remove the page altogether, but a suitable replacement could possibly serve as a tool to uplift behavior you'd like to see more of. That's definitely easier said than done, but I'd love to see some experimentation in this area.

DanielRibeiro··on How Super Angel Chris Sacca Burned Bridges and Crafted the Best Seed Portfolio
From his interview[1] with Sarah Lacy, I believe he would agree with you. The paraphrased quote[2]:

At this point, the still unsophisticated investor got caught up in the realities of human nature that make people attribute their successes to their personal genius while attributing failures to bad luck. In reality, he says, the exact opposite is the case.

[1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqUG2_cmZ6I It is long. I recommend watching it fully nonetheless.
