DanCarvajal··on Sea life bounced back fast after the ‘mother of mass extinctions’
Well I did say that I was simplifying somethings, which I think is useful as this is kind of a classic shorthand way of comparing example food chains for the layperson. My goal was to not lose the forest for the trees.

Come to think of it, I talk to a lot of five years olds which has definitely impacted how I approach topics.

Got to see my first whale earlier this year (Gray Whale) and on the way home I kept tying to hype my SO up on the fact that it's a privilege to be alive on this planet at the same time as the largest animals ever (the whales specifically the Blue). Hoping to see some Orcas later this year on a PNW trip.

But with more reasonable humidity!
DanCarvajal··on The Astonishing Transformation of Austin
Honestly, Tulsa and Oklahoma City are pretty darn good these days and represent good options for a lot of people. Oklahoma also sneakily has a lot of great outdoor recreation and some of the best bouldering in the U.S.

Oklahoma is interesting, it's got some unique issues but I feel like most people born there never really leave.

Speaking as an Oklahoman, Texas is too Texas for its own good.
DanCarvajal··on Apple’s 2½ year old iPhone 12 is 6% faster than the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
If iOS 17 does in fact have side loading I'll finally be jumping ship to a 12 of 13 mini so fast.
DanCarvajal··on Why Steam Deck Is One of the Most Significant PC Gaming Moments in Years
My PS5 is now just a Blu-ray player since I got my SteamDeck.
DanCarvajal··on Until further notice, think twice before using Google to download software
Was looking at a fake Audacity site just the other day. I couldn't believe it was the number one search result when I was researching progress on the project's UI redesign.
DanCarvajal··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Growing up I went through the same thing and eventually talked to my mom about it and we came to the conclusion that it all went back to her parents who lived the Great Depression. When you grow up on Bread and Butter pickle sandwiches and then have industrialized food thrown at you post WWII you don't question it, but it has impacts on subsequent generations.

Funny enough the other day I had a liverwurst sandwich, something my Grandmother would have easily recognized, except I bought it from a local whole animal butcher. What was once one of the cheapest forms of meat is now rare gourmet sandwich.

DanCarvajal··on Chipotle Goes on Hiring Spree of 15,000 Amid Strong Growth
Back in the day when I thought they were a very good value for quality my significant other and I would go there ALL the time. Date night was splitting a burrito and chips then catching a movie. Eventually when we got married we actually had Chipotle catering for our wedding, yes the wedding.

However, I echo the comments that it's not what it once was. I blame the queso introduction, they went through three versions and still have made a good product which now looks indicative of their larger issues. I sincerely hope they turn it around.

DanCarvajal··on Philosophy Bro
I'm a proud owner of an original Kickstarter copy of "Descartes Meditations, Bro" circa 2013 or something like that.
DanCarvajal··on Remote work is gutting downtowns
My city has a few neat adaptive reuse projects right now converting office building to residential buildings. I really hope the concept works out.
DanCarvajal··on Instagram Is Over
It's because these apps are longer social in the original sense of social media. Most of my family's sharing of what would have been Instagram or Facebook posts are now in a WhatsApp group I admin. Sure I would have loved to get everyone onto Signal instead but the end result has been much better experience for us.
DanCarvajal··on Alcohol death toll is growing, US Government reports say
I have a coworker who I've worked with for 9 years of which the entirety I've been sober, he offers me a beer multiple times a year.
DanCarvajal··on Alcohol death toll is growing, US Government reports say
I quit drinking nearly ten years ago. My purely anecdotal thought is that I've noticed a marked increase in consumption over the period I quit drinking, possibly escalated more thanks to the pandemic.

For me, I left the homebrew and craft beer scene after I began to think I had a problem. Now there's starting to be conversations about alcoholism in the industry, leading to some breweries having lower abv options or NAs. Frankly I think that's only the first step of what's going to need to be a long journey.

DanCarvajal··on Jony Ive on Life After Apple
I find the Magic Mouse such a conflicting product. The touch sensor on it is amazing and really innovated in the mouse space, but ergonomically it's a mess.

Could simply be a fit problem. Check out pants with larger room in the thighs and maybe even a crotch gusset.
DanCarvajal··on Lego Is Discontinuing Mindstorms
Bummer, I remember loving the system when was on the school Botball team in the early 2000s.
DanCarvajal··on The coffee maker that ate my kitchen
I've always wanted a vintage commercial espresso machine as they're the closest I'd likely get to owning a steam engine, but that's not a great justification in a home appliance. Instead we have a much more reasonable Breville Barista Express which is a machine right at the sweet spot of quality for the price, just before diminishing returns kick in.
DanCarvajal··on Why I am not going to buy a computer (1987) [pdf]
Wendell Barry is not for everyone, I have only read a few of his essays but I’ve read most of his Port Williams series which I think everyone should at least read a book from. I grew up pretty rural and there’s no better series is my mind that captures the complicated feelings of loss and nostalgia for a type of living that’s long gone, but also may never have existed as we remember.
DanCarvajal··on Why houses in Bermuda have white stepped roofs (2016)
Just stayed at a off the grid cabin outside Volcano and the rain catch system has inspired me put something in for my backyard vegetable garden in Utah.
DanCarvajal··on Crabs evolved at least five times from separate groups of crustaceans (2021)
It’s strongly theorized that turtle ancestors went from land to sea and then back to land. However, it’s tough to completely pin down because turtles have a very bizarre evolutionary history. For example there are proto turtles with shells but without beaks but also proto turtles with beaks but without shells suggesting that either beaks or shells evolved twice and one of those lines died out.

Definitely my next laptop once I can justify a new laptop for my needs.
DanCarvajal··on Dog parasite is developing resistance to treatments
Sure it was multiple rounds of multiple medications trying to find which ones could actually kill the dog track worms he had. It took nearly a year all told.
DanCarvajal··on Dog parasite is developing resistance to treatments
I strongly suspect that to be the case. It was frustrating to put in the work picking up after our dog's bowel movements and spraying the area with a bleach solution only for other people to not pick up enough after their dogs.
DanCarvajal··on Dog parasite is developing resistance to treatments
We did the typical recommendation from adoption groups now days is Drontal combined with AdvantageMulti. Drontal to kill the worms and AdvantageMulti to prevent reinfection during and after the killing. Lately I have heard of groups switching bovine grade dewormers, especially for dogs from Mexican tracks.
