DLA··on House Republicans propose planting a trillion trees
Lots on snark in this thread. Adding a few real projects to the discussion:

There is the UN Trillion Trees project that aims to work to restore global forests [1]

CMU engineered a self-planting seed carrier that can enable mass planting by aerial platforms [2].

China’s Gobi Desert Reforrestation project “The Green Wall“ [3].

Nature Conservancy Billion Tree Project [4].

Yale University report examining the pros and cons of large tree planting projects [5].

DLA··on Vector Index Basics and the Inverted File Index
Do we need zilliz posts every couple days for the same thing?
DLA··on Show HN: Violet – TUI front end for Vagrant
This TUI looks both fantastic and useful. I’m going to use it at work for sure. I too have been very interested in TUIs especially using bubbletea and the other great libs from Charm. Great work. Thanks for sharing in HN.
DLA··on How to build a website without frameworks and tons of libraries
Very happy DaisyUI user here. While I like tailwind, I have to agree that for simple things like buttons as mentioning above, it sure is verbose. One of the best aspects of DaisyUI is the wealth of ready-made elements that have very reasonable defaults which often need very little to no tweaking. Of course, you can adjust them as needed very easily. Since we’re on the topic let’s complete the stack: Using DaisyUI and a small GoFiber.io server running Go stdlib HTML templates, I’m able to crank out high performance web apps with minimal fuss. By using the embedding feature in the Go compiler you can ball everything up into a single deployable binary. For in-page interactivity, I like htmx and/or AlpineJS, depending on the use case. No NodeJS dependencies in sight!
DLA··on How to build a website without frameworks and tons of libraries
How is a 45 line python script that runs templates hard to debug? You’re calling something “most likely” shitty, but have you seen it? Used it? I find this post and the method they use to produce their site utterly refreshing. What is “shitty” is many dozens (being kind) of JS libraries, complex configurations, and learning multiple tools to produce the same result!
DLA··on Google claims to have proved its supremacy with new quantum computer
Can anyone recommend a few videos, papers, or books that "start at the beginning" for how quantum computing works--the physics parts like entanglement. I'm a computer scientist, so I'm good with the algorithm/programming aspects. Should I start with quantum annealing? Ideally I guess I'd like some pointers to good approachable resources on the ways qubits are made, maintained, written to and read from--start me off at the quantum version of the transistor. Thanks HN.
DLA··on Goldman is looking for a way out of its partnership with Apple
Apple could do the financing part themselves and partner with a card network for comms infrastructure.
DLA··on How to become structured and clear in communications
These resources may help. All effort you put into better communications will pay you back for the rest of your life. This is the single most critical general skill for success. Good luck.

DLA··on Why do we need hedge funds and traders?
The market needs a variety of participants operating on different strategies across different time horizons with different risk tolerance levels to enable price discovery and liquidity. If everyone (loosely speaking) were buy and hold and active trading was vastly curtained market liquidity would be hurt. The heterogeneous nature of market participants makes for a healthy, vibrant, and liquid market for all. [former registered market professional]
DLA··on World’s Largest Fusion Project Is in Big Trouble
This is not a surprise—way late and way over budget. I think approaches like Helion’s [1] are a more viable approach. Their design is dramatically smaller at pilot plant scale. It’s radically simpler—short pulsed fusion reactions rather than trying to entrap, ignite, and sustain continuous fusion. Direct energy capture by magnetic field is brilliant IMO.

Disclaimer: No connections to company; just impressed by their approach and awesome explainers on their site.

DLA··on Google formally accuses monopolist Microsoft of trapping people in its cloud
One day Google could sell or just quit their cloud like so many other businesses. Microsoft likely not. QED.
DLA··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
True, but then why even go into the business? Could they not model out that this would never be a giant revenue stream and customers all the grief.
DLA··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
Yet another business Google bails on. Add that to the pile. Gee wonder why Google Cloud is getting smashed by AWS and Azure—maybe because nobody trusts Google to not flake out on that business or key products within it. They need some management changes!
DLA··on The UI of Hacker News Is Perfect
I think HN’s success is a mix of great people with incredible views and knowledge, good moderation, and the data-dense simple UI. Most social media sites and forums have a vastly lower content-to-noise ratio — all the emoji madness, UI cards for far too many things, wasted space, infinite scrolling, etc. Here you have nice threaded discussions that focus on content above shiny, blinky, noisy UI distractions. Love HN and the excellent people who share here.
DLA··on What do you think about UI that gives density customization like Gmail?
Absolute must have! In a former life I was a trader and the Bloomberg terminal has some very dense displays which are all stunning. Far too many sites and apps use very padded cards and sections which make for a very poor “data/ink ratio” [1]. Allowing the user to density the display with settings options fixes it.

DLA··on SR-71 Sled Driver Brian Schul passed away last night
RIP Brian. American hero.
DLA··on Windows 11 is so broken that even Microsoft can’t fix it
My company thankfully supports Windows and Mac. The PowerPoint & meeting types generally use Windows. All us devs use Macs. It’s bad enough we have to suffer the horrible UX of Teams. I could not imagine having to deal with Windows on a daily basis, although Linux Subsystem for Windows is pretty cool—-like a sip of cool water on a desert island!
DLA··on Ink: React for interactive command-line apps
Just what I was looking for, 1000+ JS dependencies and Yoga's deps to make a CLI app. Nope. Hard pass. But, I do love the concept of components for CLIs. I've had much success with the Charm set of tools for CLIs with Go (https://charm.sh).

DLA··on Japan Breaks with U.S. Allies, Buys Russian Oil at Prices Above Cap
So very true, but that does not change the geographical, economic, and demographic factors he speaks about.
DLA··on Japan Breaks with U.S. Allies, Buys Russian Oil at Prices Above Cap
All true! It's too easy to focus on the downsides, but there are significant upsides as this comment points out. There's an excellent discussion by Geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan here [1]; he talks about China vis a vis the US with respect the geographic, demographic, and economic advantages/disadvantages. Worth a watch in this context.

DLA··on Show HN: GWI, a web interface for your Git repos in a Go library
This is fantastic. Love the use of Go and template-driven views. I’ve build a significant enterprise application in a very similar fashion and really like the results.
DLA··on I never understood why veterinarians are at a high risk of suicide
Wow what a heart wrenching story but worthwhile to understand hard choices vets have to deal with. Makes me so appreciate our awesome vet more than we already do.
DLA··on Firearms channels embrace Rumble as YouTube starts censoring videos
Well said! This is purely those in control of a platform imparting their views on users because they can. The challenge is (one of the challenges) is the “rules” change on the fly for no particular reason or some contrived reason citing “safety” or … your guess is as good as mine. Maybe next week it will be a ban on drones with more the 6 motors doing “risky” maneuvers or pit pull dogs because they are “dangerous” (silly example: dog owner; dogs aren’t dangerous, stupid owners that don’t train, socialize, handle K9s properly are) or home made ice cream making because sugar is bad for you. I mean where does this end? These decisions should be more community powered, IMO.
