Cyder··on Pentium III: Processor Serial Number Controversy
Pentium 3 isssue? Immediately knew it's an old article.
Cyder··on Last Windows 11 update changed all default browser settings to Edge
Windows 11 is desktop as a service. Set it the easy you like it and use a firewall or pihole to block updates. It's been the only way to have a stable system since windows 10. On days when you have extra time, go ahead and update, then fix everything Microsoft ruined.
Cyder··on Ask HN: Which projects deserve more donations?
That's the question VC firms try to answer every day...
Cyder··on Assume everyone is stupid, lazy and possibly insane, including you
I think this article describes Mozilla's attitude perfectly.
Cyder··on Nuclear radiation used to transmit digital data wirelessly
neutrino messaging was mentioned in The Hummingbird Project... Good movie
Cyder··on Canon sued for disabling scanner when printers run out of ink
We need an open source printer
Cyder··on Windows 11: Just say no
It's Vista all over again.
Cyder··on Low Cost Banana Pi BPI-R2 Pro 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Router Board
I own 2 of the original version of this board. Banana pi has a small community and little support. I was suckered in by the good specs but it's a serious hassle to even boot and documentation is just plain bad. Banana pi boards are for the very experienced soc developer. Limited OS, limited documentation, limited support. Limited success.
Cyder··on Installing Windows 11 on Legacy BIOS Without Secure Boot
Ddg or google tpm highjacking. There is no cure all for security just Microsoft taking control
Cyder··on The drought in the western U.S. is getting bad
The amount of greenhouse gases released by one volcano eruption...
Cyder··on U.S. fears China attack on Taiwan
So Britain didn't exist until 1833? It wouldn't have been in the US if Britain didn't bring it.
Cyder··on Who Owns England’s Woods? (2020)
Every state in the US keeps property records for tax purposes. Official surveys are often dine when bought and sold. Title insurance companies are strict about these things and mortgage companies require title insurance. It's all tightly regulated and you can look up online the exact boundaries of your property.
Cyder··on The Rise, Fall and Revival of AMD (2020)
Article makes me want to fire up my k6.

My new ryzen 2700 isn't as fast as my 8350... because pcie lanes. My m2 drives are more than 500MB/s slower on the 450 motherboard onboard m2 slots. Should have gone with a threadripper. Still, I'm always a underdog fan and don't like paying the tariff for owning the most popular hardware. I compare specs and teviews. But availability is another issue...

Cyder··on When Death Comes: An Oncology Nurse Finds Solace in Mary Oliver
I hate quippy cliches people say in these types of situations when they don't know what else to say. If you don't know what to say, say "i don't know what to say". Be honest. You don't have to say anything.
Cyder··on Why does Elon Musk keep pushing garbage investments? What is the deal
Musk is the new Jobs
Cyder··on Windows Refund Day (1999)

The movie 'ex machina' is a great example of this discussion... must see
Cyder··on Ask HN: Best USA state to be self-employed in?
Many business incorporate in Delaware since they have very friendly business taxes. If i remember right, they also have no personal income tax, like Texas and Tennessee.

Cyder··on The 1996 Law [Section 230] That Ruined the Internet
The author mistakenly thinks that letting/making Google or Facebook censor their users (more than they already do) would prevent a monopoly and reduce monopoly advantage. How does giving monopolies more power reduce their power? It doesn't.
Cyder··on WiFi 6 gets 1.34 Gbps on the Raspberry Pi CM4
Picked up a handful of old 10g mellanox cards and just direct connected my computers since even the used 10g switches are still expensive... i can reach double my 1g ethernet speeds but not near the 10g max. I'm thinking the pciv1 slots str holding them back...
Cyder··on The Most Common Errors in Undergraduate Mathematics (2009)
My undergrad math classes were in lecture halls with a couple hundred students. The labs taught by grad students were better but would have been more helpful without the exponential confusion added by the lectures that had required attendance. That ended the pursuit of an engineering degree. Thanks George Mason. The economics courses and professors were amazing however.
Cyder··on IPv6 Is a Nightmare
Hasnt the privacy issue been helped by using temporary ipv6 addresses? This is why my Windows machines have 3 v6 address with only one being permanent and the other 2 being called temporary? The temporary address did change after a restart. I checked my Linux VMs and none of them have this security feature yet.
Cyder··on Adverse Market Refinance Fee Implementation now December 1
People out of work due to covid are refinancing and rolling their late payments into their refi to keep from losing their houses. Basically, Fan & Fred are charging you for letting you refi instead of foreclosing. They're charging those without money again.
Cyder··on People around the world are collectively losing faith in democratic systems
As stated, in this article democracy isn't defined. The United States is a Republic with oligarchical, extra constitutional agencies.
Cyder··on Wang Labs' New Freestyle Just May Suit Your Work Style (1989)
The first PC I bought with my own money after high school was a Wand. 386/66. Had multimedia way before it was common.
Cyder··on The McDonnell Douglas-Boeing merger led to the 737 Max crisis
Capitalism is working in this case. Boeing is being punished. Market forces are not always instantaneous. The China boom made investors demand unreasonable returns for domestic companies as well. A good business plan and making solid money over time is no longer acceptable. The China boom changed the expectations of investors to unreasonable rates. But the China boom wasn't capitalism. The Chinese economy is highly controlled and this influence on more capitalistic markets is what happens where the two separate markets converge.
Cyder··on Apple has a secret team working on internet satellites
Satellite internet is too slow to do much. It reminds me of the dial up days.
Cyder··on Sale of Second-Hand E-Books Infringes Copyright, Rules CJEU
They've never heard of bit-rot in Europe
Cyder··on Opinion: The Mac Pro isn’t overpriced, it offers something nothing else does
It's just first on the consumer market with 32 cores. Wait until AMD and Intel's comparable chips hit the mass market. 32 cores isn't unbelievable l like it use to be.

Putting multiple graphics cards in a machine has been common for a long time in gaming rigs. Crypto-miners run +12 graphics cards in an attempt to be profitable.

There's nothing unique mentioned in the article except the proprietary video stream processing, and I guarantee you, there's other high end machines that do the same thing if not more.
I really wonder what the author's specialty is, since he thinks these specs are actually unique to Apple.
Cyder··on Reinvigorating the most important battle in economics
This aspect of economics is critically important as the supposed engine for growth changes from private to public domains. Where I live, the public sector far outweighs the private sector in providing jobs. As such, the voters follow the ever curricular pattern of growing the government to the demise of the private sector. The subject of this book being the public sector, my interest would be the balance of the private and public. Just how large can the public sector grow ( with their overpaying for outsourcing, as the review stated) before becoming unsustainable? Another good aspect of this book is it's analysis of healthcare systems. In the US, healthcare is often used as the poster boy for failed capitalism. The fact is that healthcare is overregulated and not at all capitalist in most Western societies. But that would be another book entirely....
