CrimsonChapulin··on Oracle attempt to hide cybersecurity incident from customers?
I had a script calling their apis to setup one of their free arm instances after I deleted the one I had to change the OS (something I had done before).

After running every hour for several months I gave up (always out of capacity and it was impossible to change the region on free tier back then). They either had a bug that still showed my account as using the deleted resources or no capacity, both which seem out of place in a “cloud” infrastructure.

CrimsonChapulin··on By the end of today, NASA's workforce will be about 10 percent smaller
OpenAI and Facebook have been pirating content to train their models. Do you honestly expect them to be punished? The law is not the only thing that matters

Many of the largest businesses nowadays are run in the most immoral, cutthroat and corrupt way possible with armies of lawyers who’s job is to stall the process and find loop holes in the existing laws so they can keep operating with impunity.

CrimsonChapulin··on Google lays off hundreds working on its voice-activated assistant
By that logic monetary value is a company’s most valuable asset.

Edit: I understand it was satire.

CrimsonChapulin··on Song stuck in your head? Just hum to search (2020)
I’m his worked for me as well. Otherwise it would just do a Google search for “what’s this song” which was very frustrating. At least the song came up, even though it was in Spanish which I didn’t know whether it was used to train the models/input they use before trying.

In the US, they serve to shift blame from distracted drivers for running someone over sadly (crappy j-walking laws) in addition to the normal use.
CrimsonChapulin··on I accidentally saved my company half a million dollars
Im surprised no one asked to automate an email to management of the status for the rollout of changes.

“We’ll need the percentage complete as well and a summary of the savings expected. It needs to be sent out every Friday at noon.”

CrimsonChapulin··on Ask HN: How to do transactional SMS as a bootstrapped or startup company?
Not to mention the providers will not tell you the limits to avoid spammers flying just below them, but you might find out once all your T-Mobile customers start to fail (silently of course). You get that one random number on an MVNO which for some reason unknown to the SMS provider just can’t receive SMS from your numbers.

I had forgotten the production go-live for critical functions for our client got pushed back like 6 months due to short codes getting approved at seemingly random schedules until you mentioned the approval process. I do not miss working with SMS.

CrimsonChapulin··on The Oracle Java Platform Extension for Visual Studio Code
I have been working on enterprise Java projects (basic consulting) which uses eclipse almost exclusively. We do not use Smurf naming convention (SmurfDto, SmurfDao, SmurfService, SmurfController) just for being able to find related classes. We do it because eclipse seems to randomly refactor classes based on non fully qualified names. No to naming something Constants as that will (randomly) refactor the codebase to break partially if you decide later to refactor something in that class.

I have tried everything from no vendor plugins for app servers to a vanilla eclipse and it still messes up.

I do like the product, but it can be very frustrating at times.

CrimsonChapulin··on Show HN: Track time spent on activities that matter to you
It is a nice website, but I agree with you.

It reminds me of the thinking that a smart home is one that you can turn the lights on or off with a web app or smart assistant. In reality, the most pleasant implementations do something like use motion sensors or wifi/Bluetooth to avoid having to even open the app for the automations to kick in.

E.g.: detecting when no one is connected to the home wifi and locking the doors might be more useful than having the option to remotely do it since there is no need to remember.

CrimsonChapulin··on Testing if a port can be reached, using built-in tools other than ol' telnet
Most developers will have git and git bash installed nowadays which support standard cURL (along with all the basic useful bash utilities (sed, find, grep, tr, sort, uniq, etc.) We’ve given up on writing anything windows specific at work as the format and options are pretty limited. The most we will do is call setx or similar if we need to setup a user environment variable in our scripts. It has saved so much of our sanity and time as bash scripts are so much easier to write and maintain.
CrimsonChapulin··on Show HN: Decorate Java stack traces with source code snippets
FYI: for the gradle dependencies section on the read me, both junit4 and junit5 say junit5.
CrimsonChapulin··on Duck DNS
No idea why it’s trending, but it is not very random. It’s probably the most popular DDNS out there right now. A lot of docker images have built in support or plugins to use it in conjunction with lets encrypt for HTTPS support.
CrimsonChapulin··on Most promoted and blocked domains among Kagi Search users
They had functional but inaccurate articles (in terms of best practices and long term solutions). I avoided them for a time but I must admit they listened and amended their tutorials, which is more than a lot of websites can say.
CrimsonChapulin··on Employees bid on Anchor Brewery
What’s wrong with infinite growth? The only people that tell you it is unsustainable are those 8th grade math nerds.

I agree with you, it seems like we are living in an era with global growth accelerators but no one to tell people it is impossible to keep increasing profits forever regardless of how many markets you can be a leader for.

CrimsonChapulin··on Beyond Markdown (2018)
That’s PascalCase, camelCase does not capitalize the first word.
