Crazyontap··on Reddit can't build a better search engine
The real experts or people who create great content just for the sake of sharing information never care about backlinks and whatever else Google requires for SEO.. OTOH the SEO scammers like Pinterest create little content and give the search engine exactly what it wants (backlinks, social signals, etc) which is why the good content is so hard to find.

But at the end of the day it's the search engine's job to separate the wheat from the chaff and google has been doing a very poor job of it lately. Like the article right said, the best is to prioritise websites that are about sharing knowledge not affiliate marketing, paid ads, marketing, etc.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: What made your business take off that you wish you'd done much earlier?
I kinda expected this as the top comment. It's just so simple stupid yet it's a wonder that a lot of people discover it the hard way and most still haven't.

I think it just comes down to fear of rejection in the end. Making a product, adding features, working on things and even showing your "cool" demo to friends isn't same as asking strangers for money.. because people can say a million nice things about what you have to offer until you ask them to put in their credit card number. Then the you get to know what they really think.

Crazyontap··on Mark Cuban's pharmacy started with a cold email
> You can drive to any local Walmart and get it for $4 and they will bill your insurance > and they're going to charge an extra $5.00 shipping at checkout

I'd say driving to wallmart and dealing with insurance can be as much as $5 worth of gas and time for some.

Crazyontap··on Simula One – Linux VR Computer
Wow this looks like an ad for what a PC ad would have been 30 years ago. It's weird looking and maybe not there because of the bulky VR headset but I'm so excited to see where these things are heading. Hopefully within a decade we will see a much compact looking vr headset that would be not bigger than actual glasses and just the thought of having multiple monitors like this anywhere makes me so happy. I really hope they are able to reduce the size of these VR headsets and it really feels we're finally on the verge of another tech revolution.
Crazyontap··on Aspect-ratio is great
This is really amazing. The last CSS thing I learned about was flex-box and it so vastly improved my side projects. I'm sure this will come quite handy too.

What are more such things which you love about CSS but only learned about recently? Can greatly benefit CSS dinosaurs like me who know CSS but haven't really kept up on the recent developments.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
I've too felt this way and one of the reasons for this is you're lacking something on which you can't really put a finger on just yet.

Take this test (1) - it's from a book called your best year ever (no affiliation just found it on gr) and though it feels a little pop-pschy it does give you some insight on where you may be lacking and the cause of such feelings.

(1) https://assessments.michaelhyatt.com/lifescore/ (it will ask you for email so use mailinator)

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: Is mental illness an ad-targeting category?
How about you turn ON all ad personalization and just search for cat food, funny jokes websites and a bunch of random noise.

I think there is a chrome extension that will do this, i.e search random shit to poison all trackers. Maybe it will help you defeat it.

Learned this in school, it far easier to turn a F into E, I to T, etc by overwriting it with a pen and making complete nonsense of things than trying to erase it completely, which is harder and leaves more traces.

Crazyontap··on Show HN: Find alternatives to almost any popular GitHub repo
Cool project. In a related note, sometime back I used to use cdnjs a lot to find the best js libraries and related projects too.

So let's say you're looking for the best carousel library, just type carousel in their search and it will show you all the popular carousel libraries sorted by github stars.

Crazyontap··on Why can't you reverse a string with a flag emoji?
This section on the linked Wikipedia article(1) is quite amazing on how the family emoji is rendered using a zero-width joiner

(1) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoji#Joining

edit: forgot HN doesn't render emojis. Better read it directly on Wikipedia i guess.

Crazyontap··on If – A Poem by Rudyard Kipling
It's hard to believe that the author of this poem also wrote this :/

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_White_Man%27s_Burden

Crazyontap··on Tools to Download Netflix / Disney / Apple TV Content
One of the best layman hacks to rip all these services is still using ffmpeg/sse with Xvfb.

They can DRM and engineer all they want but nobody can stop me from recording what's playing on my screen :D

Crazyontap··on Most advice is pretty bad
I think most advice is bad because the person giving the advice somehow also wants to sound like a hero or at least somebody you would want to look up to.

Unfortunately most of the times the reality to do the things for which the advice is sought is rather mundane and sometimes not even something a person would be proud off.

Like for example, if you want to be a very successful business the reality advice is to market more aggressively, lock people in your walled garden, save taxes, inflate prices, make a commission on other people's work, etc but the advice you give is make better products, innovate, make it user friendly, create brand loyalty, etc.

Crazyontap··on Show HN: Aftertext
Nice concept. I wrote a 10 line Javascript to convert HTML to aftertext for no reason.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: How do you stick to projects?
I've been through this and in my case it turned out to be clinical ADHD.

Unfortunately my diagnosis came at the very late age (40+) because whole life I thought it is just me being lazy and unfocused and seeking medical help / medication is the wrong answer to such problems - only to discover now that some of our brains are actually wired differently and it's not that we are being weak or unfocused but it's actually the wiring in our brain making us behave this way and you can freaking see this on an MRI too.

If you can't get an evaluation at least try to read this book called driven to distraction. One other book which I also read again and again is 'Finish' by Jon acuff. Has many useful tips which anyone can use.

Crazyontap··on NewLimit: a company built to extend human healthspan
But how is it different from a company spending money to find cure for cancer which also ultimately extends the lives of the people? Am I missing something?
Crazyontap··on Ask HN: Why were a few rank numbers black on the homepage?
Great to see the mods here are also programmers which probably why the site is moderated so well. If you know how the code works you can do so many little optimisations like these to help with your work (as opposed to asking the IT team to make such tweaks for you).
Crazyontap··on Defensive CSS
Wouldn't using a mature css framework like Bootstrap mitigate a lot of issues?

(not asking rhetorically just wanna know if I still have to worry about all this after using Bootstrap)

Crazyontap··on Ubiquiti developer charged with extortion, causing 2020 “breach”
Also 25 btc ransom. That's like 50k usd for such a big risk.

Sort of like how they show a person trying to make enough to pay some medical bills or something.

Crazyontap··on Show HN: Randomly create beautiful website layouts
I see you submitted the same link yesterday but didn't get any traction. Genuinely curious if HN allows consecutive re-submissions? Couldn't find anything in the guidelines / dang's comments either.

Anyway, I'm working on a Show HN myself and it would be great to know if it breaks any rules to submit the same project again especially if it doesn't get traction previously.

Crazyontap··on Apple’s app review prevents developer from submitting fix to game for the blind
As a developer I have vowed to never develop anything for Apple nor buy any of the products. I know my mutiny is like a drop in the ocean for a trillion dollar company but I strongly agree with GNU stance that Apple's Operating Systems Are Malware(1).

Apple been trying to stifle innovation for profit for a very long time and has been getting away with it. Had it not for the good open-source alternatives I believe computers would just be big dumb bricks with 0 scope of experimentation.

Crazyontap··on Stripe banned us for payment disputes but we never had a single dispute
What scares me most is what happens when this happens to you and you can't get to the HN front-page? Will you get the same resolution from Stripe/Google/Apple/Aws if it didn't?

Making the front-page is often random luck I think, which is also why I personally always upvote such submissions when I find the person making it is a solopreneur/small company - as this may be their last and final resort to get things sorted.

Crazyontap··on Mozilla VPN Completes Independent Security Audit by Cure53
My biggest problem with using a VPN is the overtly hostile treatment by Google and Cloudflare.

Everytime I try to browse with a VPN (currently using Windscribe) I just see those nasty captchas everywhere. Google won't even let me do a simple search without letting me tag zebra crossings and school buses. Same with Cloudflare which also adds CAPTCHA before showing me a site which is basically most of the internet now.

Really don't understand why they do this to VPN users. Anyway, Anybody know how to fix this?

Crazyontap··on The complicated reality of doing what you love
I think one trick to get around this is by delegating and if possible automating the parts you don't like.

Unfortunately its much easier said than done because it takes meticulous planning and long time to set it up. But it can be done and after that you can spend a good amount of time doing what you love and get a lot of help with the parts you don't enjoy.

As a matter of fact if you are able to successfully delegate the parts you don't enjoy the overall result is much much better.

Crazyontap··on Ask HN: Companies of one, what is your tech stack?
> What is your tech stack?

Backend: LAMP (Linux Apache Mysql Php)

Backend Framework: Php no framework only composer

Frontend Framework: Vuejs 2.6

Deployment: rsync

Hosting: contabo (8gb/€5)

Email: SES

Error reporting: Honeybadger (it's free)

> Why did you choose it?

It's something I've known my entire life and it works great for me.

Crazyontap··on The Clickbaitification of Netflix
One thing I've never understood about Netflix is why it autocompletes movie names that it doesn't have in its library.

It's like such a bummer when its shows the exact movie name and then unrelated results.

Crazyontap··on Poly Network hacker returns $258M after stealing $600M
Such interesting food for thought. You are deceiving people for your own gains but then you're not breaking any rules (i guess since i don't know much about runescape), and it would really matter if it was an NPC who did that to them.
Crazyontap··on Vue 3.2
We've been pretty happy with Vue 2.6 and haven't had the motivation to take the leap.

I did try it and even though it's advertised as somewhat backward compatible it did break lots of things, which was totally expected and it's a major release.

Also we couldn't figure out a lot of things, like how can I access the $children like before, why does everything show Object proxy in console, etc. Posting on SO and forums also didn't yeild much help since everyone is still discovering it too I guess.

So in the end we decided why fix something which ain't broken for now. Vue 2 still kicks ass performance wise and is really easy to use.

Crazyontap··on The 3x+1 Problem [video]
This video severely disrupted my sleep yesterday.

Whole night I was thinking and dreaming about this darned thing, even though I knew it was pretty pointless to do so, considering I'm not even a mathematician and have always found maths hard.

Still a brilliant video and now I get why people could spend 20+ years of their precious lives trying to solve these things.

Crazyontap··on Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley reaches one billion views [video]
The Charlie bit my finger got sold as a NFT.

Even though the rumor about this has been circulating for quite long now, I hope this video never does that.

Crazyontap··on The mermaid is taking over Google search in Norway
Can somebody else who is in Norway can confirm this? It could be simply be a malware injecting this. Would be great to eliminate this possibility
