CptMauli··on Ask HN: What are some rite-of-passage style projects for programmers?
A timesheet application
CptMauli··on What It Feels Like to Freeze on National Television
For me the opposite is true. I don't have a problem talking to a larger crowd (as long as I know my stuff), but if it is recorded, even if I'm doing the recording myself (as in a screencast) and have the ability to take as many takes as I want, I can't manage to pull through. I'm stumbling and it is totally frustrating, since it takes such a long time.
CptMauli··on Towards an Open Banking API Standard
For Germany there is HBCI (now FinTS), which is relatively old. Its not really web oriented, but rather used by banking Software like Quicken.

CptMauli··on How Germany abolished tuition fees
For technical areas you are right, but if you are looking in the field of chemistry or biology a PhD really is required, although even then most of these are doing ordinary lab work which a technician could do as well.

CptMauli··on The Man Behind MakerBot on Finding the Stories That Build Your Brand
I really, really enjoyed the documentation "Print the Legend" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3557464/ which is available on netflix.

Don't expect to learn anything about 3d printing, but is a great story about startups.

CptMauli··on Was It Too Soon to Be Sustainable?
Nothing of the mentioned tech is bleeding edge. At least in Germany everything of the mentionend installations you could have installed without a raised eyebrow twenty years ago. The only thing which changed is the price of PV, which really came down over the last 10 to 15 years.

And with the blinds, not to automate this is foolish, because this is something which has to be done constantly. Unlike snow and dirt which only has to be removed occasionaqlly.

CptMauli··on Show HN: Industrial Control Systems on the Internet
Maybe this is a good time to show off our little IEC 60870-5-104 Explorer: http://ibh-systems.com/iec60870/

There are only a few free 104 clients avaiable, but most of them are terrible (and even pretty buggy), especially if you just want to have a quick overview.

The good ones are expensive (around 1500 bucks) so its not something you would buy on a whim.

Tell us what you think, and if you need any features we are happy to get feedback from you.

By the way, we also develop a EPL licensed IEC 60870-5-104 java implementation. At the moment we are looking to crowdfund the development of a cleanroom OPC UA implementation: https://wiki.eclipse.org/EclipseSCADA/Plan/IEC_62541

A "Fachinformatiker" (for some reason translated as specialist by google translate) you can become through an apprenticeship in Germany for some time (there where predecessors to it with different names)

oder auf deutsch http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fachinformatiker

so it is nothing new at all.

CptMauli··on Makani Power, a Google funded wind energy startup, comes out of stealth
This will not work. It uses too much space and It looks like it will need repairs or at least maintenance all the time.
CptMauli··on How a friend outsourced his apartment hunt (and saved 30 hours)
I'm a bit surprised that there seem to be no good apartment search websites. Has this something to do with the larger home ownership? Or is it an artifact of the larger area of the US?

In Germany there is for instance http://www.immobilienscout24.de and some more websites like it (although the same offers end up on nearly every one of them). The search options there are more finely tuned than on lets say http://www.apartments.com. Also the larger newspapers (for instance http://immobilienmarkt.sueddeutsche.de/) have often own search engines for places to rent or buy.

CptMauli··on Save My Life - help a fellow HN'er
I don't understand why nobody has suggested http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcoidosis

It is not that common, but is is not that rare that the doctors shouldn't have picked it up. The thing is, although in most cases the disease is in most cases expressed in lung problems, it can actually affect all organs.

CptMauli··on The Zimbu programming language, by vim author Bram Moolenaar
For me the goals of zimbu look very much like the ones of ooc (it was mentioned a few days ago http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=882864) and ooc looks much nicer than zimbu.
