Covzire··on We Found the Hidden Cost of Data Centers. It's in Your Electric Bill [video]
This is a tangent, but one untapped source of energy savings that seems to be invisible to climate activists is Microsoft Windows' constant drain on resources relative to Linux and MacOS. It's shocking how energy inefficient Windows is even when it's doing absolutely nothing noticable for a user.
Covzire··on Ballot Hand Counts Lead to Inaccuracy
This field is ripe for security consulting firms, but they seem completely uninterested. Weird.
Covzire··on The Rule of Law Is Dead in the US
Yes, its analysis is completely vapid and one dimentional.
Covzire··on The Rule of Law Is Dead in the US
"When I get what I want, there is rule of law, when I don't, there isn't" is not a valid way to parse whether actual 'rule of law' exists.
Covzire··on ACA health insurance will cost the average person 75% more next year
Prior to ACA all my colleagues in my peer group had employer provided health insurance that cost us very little, and it paid for virtually all medical bills except prescriptions. A HDHP was an option, but it only saved maybe a hundred or two a month, if that.

Today for most employees a HDHP is the ONLY option, and the cost is much higher than the old standard health plans were.

Covzire··on Roman dodecahedron: 12-sided object has baffled archaeologists for centuries
What if it was a primitive form of identification?

"Oh you're a Roman citizen you say? Can you prove it?"

"You know I can't prove it, you'll have to take my word for it" nonchalantly fidgets with their dodecahedron

"You know, I'll just take your word for it, be on you way" wink

>>If you don't like nonbinary pronouns, don't use them.

That's not even what I'm talking about, it's "Body Type A" or "Body Type B" where the proverbial child has been sawn in half so nobody can have it, these mods restore the choice back to people who have a legitimate claim TO their pronouns.

Covzire··on NexusMods Changes Hands
That misses the point entirely. You know how bigoted people were in the 1970s right, when video games were still in their infancy? What if the early game industry or congress and the courts had decided that any depiction of a woman in games must conform to the moral standards of the day, so that if you have a female, she must be either a straight virgin, married to 1 faithful man, an old maid, a widow or dead.

Thats exactly what is happening today but in reverse.

Covzire··on NexusMods Changes Hands
No, they really weren't, they were made to restore an experience that matches 99.99% of people's own experiences and sensibilities at the very start of a game. If that's somehow offensive, then I'm sorry but it's utterly deranged and hateful for the 0.01% to insist that their way is the only way that can or should be for all.

Or look at it this way, nobody will demand any mods be removed or censored that do the opposite to older games.

Covzire··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0
I'd donate a bit to make this a reality if someone had a chance at pulling such a service off.
Covzire··on Lawmakers are skeptical of Zuckerberg's commitment to free speech
History repeatedly shows the collective intelligence of the masses is superior to government bureaucrats. Every, single, time. I specifically mentioned COVID because everything we take for granted now as basic truths were revealed very early on in the pandemic, but got suppressed by bureaucrats who thought they knew better (or were paid not to know better).
Covzire··on Lawmakers are skeptical of Zuckerberg's commitment to free speech
We shouldn't need any new laws since it's so fundamentally and blatantly explained in the first amendment that no government official shall tell anyone what they can or can't say. SCOTUS has carved out certain language about credible threats of incitement of violence and the like and I'm ok with that.

Where it gets muddy though is during COVID+Social Media, we found a new threat against speech, e.g. the suppression of "reach" which accomplishes the exact same goal as suppressing speech, but it's legality is clouded by semantics.

So we desperately need new laws clarifying that government officials may not suppress 'reach' just because they don't like what a person or persons are saying, and most importantly we need it crystal clear that this applies even in the face of a pandemic, so that the government's embedded rent seekers can't once again force a lying narrative on the people that nobody can find their way out of, save for those who engage in 'conspiracy theories' and listen to 'conspiracy theorists'.

Covzire··on Federal cuts disrupt repairs to iconic U.S. trails
The USA is rocketing towards bankruptcy, it's just not sustainable.
Covzire··on Ask HN: Why hasn’t AMD made a viable CUDA alternative?
That reeks of gross incompetence somewhere in the organization. Like a hosting company that has a customer dealing with very poor performance, over pays greatly to avoid it while the whole time nobody even thinks to check what the linux swap file is doing.
Covzire··on Trump Says Biden's Pardons Are 'Void' and 'Vacant' Because of Autopen
Ridiculous. Good night.
Covzire··on Trump Says Biden's Pardons Are 'Void' and 'Vacant' Because of Autopen
Is that how a senile old man was allowed to keep auto-penning documents drafted by said devout loyalists?
Covzire··on Trump Says Biden's Pardons Are 'Void' and 'Vacant' Because of Autopen
Can a senile old man authorize anything in a legal sense?
Covzire··on The FAA’s Hiring Scandal
It's all connected, DEI(B) is just the latest revision of the beast.
Covzire··on Windows 7 boots slower if you set a solid background color
The first tech support call to a PC manufacturer I remember from the 90's was because of this. Was playing around on the 486 in our family room and set a high color wallpaper on windows 3.11. Took forever to boot and we didn't know why.
Covzire··on YouTuber won DMCA fight with fake Nintendo lawyer by detecting spoofed email
How can YT possibly arbitrate who transcribed/arranged a piece of classical music?
Covzire··on Journalism's fight for survival in a postliterate democracy
Different business model and/or more credible to most people?
Covzire··on Exercise to Strengthen Esophageal Sphincter and Eliminate Gastric Reflux (2022)
Vitamin B1,2,3,6,12, Iron, Zinc Oxide, A, Folic Acid, D3 etc, but I don't know if it's a function of what they add, remove or simply other ingredients that usually accompany enriched flour, like preservatives.

Raw or whole foods are a few orders of magnitude more gentle on my stomach than foods that are engineered to be shelf stable for months at room temp in the pantry.

Covzire··on Exercise to Strengthen Esophageal Sphincter and Eliminate Gastric Reflux (2022)
Did you try cutting out 'enriched' flour? That seems to be a major trigger of heartburn for me and I do a lot better without it.
Covzire··on Zuckerberg claims regret on caving to White House pressure on content
Facebook usage is tanking I think, they're losing market share because nobody trusts facebook for anything but the marketplace anymore, with exceptions of course but I don't know many people who use it anymore for anything but birthdays and the like.
Covzire··on Boeing Halts 777X Flight Tests over Damage Found in Engine Mount
There's nothing wrong with diversity but your career is stillborn if your management buys into the entire DEI cult. It's a dog whistle / trojan horse and not what you think it is.
Covzire··on NASA acknowledges it cannot quantify risk of Starliner propulsion issues
Why does this kind of partisan bickering only ever go one way on HN? Why does every decision have to be a careful calculus when one political party instead of another might get credit? Do people not realize how blatantly biased and partisan they sound?
Covzire··on July 2024 Update on Instability Reports on Intel Core 13th/14th Gen Desktop CPUs
Just want to say, I'm incredibly happy with my 7800X3D. It runs ~70C max like Intel chips used to and with a $35 air cooler and it's on average the fastest chip for gaming workloads right now.
Covzire··on Ask HN: Can anyone from Crowdstrike explain the back story?
It's mind boggling how an organization the size of CrowdStrike, built on endpoint agents running in kernel-mode had such an #epicfail. Was all of QA out this week or something? It's truly mind boggling so I'm really looking forward to the post-mortem, if we ever get one.
Covzire··on The Delusion of the Polygraph
One of my college professors was adamantly against Polygraphs, he made the case that over time it causes sociopaths to collect at whatever work address requires them because they can pass effortlessly and normal people on average get stung by false positives.
Covzire··on First anode-free sodium solid-state battery
