ConfuciusSay··on Three hundred programming interviews in thirty days
This is exactly what I came here to say.

It's all well and good that certain things (quiz) correlate more to performing well in a long-form remote coding task.

But part of the problem of hiring is that these test-style code questions are themselves not necessarily good indicators of future job performance.

The only way to truly analyze whether a given technique is working or not is to follow the candidates through into their jobs and see which ones actually become good long term employees.

ConfuciusSay··on Google: 90% of our engineers use the software you wrote (Homebrew), but...
That's why you have a probation period where it's all worked into the equation that you might be let go after three months if it's not working out.
ConfuciusSay··on What's Going on with the Trade in Services Agreement
According to Ron Kirk, Obama's former top trade official, the reason he opposes making the text public is "doing so, he suggested to Reuters, would raise such opposition that it could make the deal impossible to sign".

The stated rationale is literally "because the public would be against it".

ConfuciusSay··on What's Going on with the Trade in Services Agreement
In their desperation, the oligarchs are unwittingly sewing the seeds of their own demise.

I suppose it's to be expected; profits for the next quarter above all other considerations!

Their successors will have to deal with the fallout, not them.

The end of Greater Taylorism is nigh.

ConfuciusSay··on Why Should We Support the Idea of an Unconditional Basic Income?
Tell me, there's been various minimum wage enacted in the U.S. since the 1930's. If a minimum wage is so bad for the economy, wow come during the last ~80 years, the U.S. has been the world's foremost leading economic engine?

How come the minimum wage has been raised many times throughout history, and somehow business keeps trucking along?

Nobody is suggesting raising the minimum wage to $100/hour, that's a false argument.

The market is full of distortions. Indeed the entire creation of the ideology of capitalism was about how best to regulate and harness the powerful market forces.

ConfuciusSay··on Solved by Flexbox
The point remains that centering vertically with absolute positioning does not work with an element of variable height. Meanwhile, horizontally centering something of variable width is dead simple. Why the difference? It's a shortcoming of CSS.
ConfuciusSay··on Elon Musk email to Tesla employee about missing an event to witness the birth
Except that nobody's arguing that you have to work at Tesla, they're pointing out that Elon Musk is a dick.

Just as people can choose who to work for, people can also choose to share information on which employer is a dick.

ConfuciusSay··on “Cheating teachers go to jail. Cheating Wall Streeters don’t. What’s up?”
The big financial institutions were demonstrably complicit in the fraud of the underwriters and loan officers. There are emails, and plenty of people willing to testify. The problem is that the SEC and DOJ never pursued those investigations.

A while back, Frontline did their own investigation on this very topic, and interviewed multiple underwriters and loan officers who said that the higher ups on Wall Street were literally directing everyone to not abide by their own standards.

You can watch the entire documentary here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/untouchables/

Lanny Breuer from the DOJ was interviewed in this documentary, and his attempt to explain why the DOJ did not pursue any charges on executives was so laughable, and the evidence presented from Frontline's cursory investigation was so damning, that Mr. Breuer resigned days after the program was aired. After not prosecuting any banking executives, he then of course went on through the revolving door to make $4M/year by taking a position at a corporate law/lobbying firm that defends financial institutions.

This is NOT a "tough case" - the solid evidence is there. This is a case of a captured regulatory system.

Also, to say that ratings agencies simply "fucked up" is disingenuous. They were totally and knowingly complicit as well. The way the system was set up, the more they gave good ratings to crap, the more money they made. That's not just a "fuck up".

To the main point of the rant, aside from the regulatory capture, the difference between teachers and Wall Street is that Wall Street is very good at setting up a system where there's plausible deniability for executives, massive lobbying efforts to garner political influence, and if needed, gigantic legal teams to fight for every inch.

ConfuciusSay··on How Google Hires
In the article they say that despite being banned, they still sometimes show up in their own Google interviews.
ConfuciusSay··on Heat your home for free with heating provided by a computer server
This only seems practical in a handful of climates that stay cold throughout the entire year.

Many places that have very cold winters often also have very warm summers. In which case, do you turn the servers off in the summer?

ConfuciusSay··on Basic income: the water room analogy
"pump in free money into the economy and price of everything will rise relatively"

This makes no sense. Runaway inflation is always a worry in any economy, but "free money" does not cause inflation. The government distributes plenty of "free money" as it is right now, and we're not seeing runaway inflation.

Those who support basic income argue that implementing the policy would more likely lead to the so-called "virtuous cycle" where, because people have money to spend, the economy improves etc. and because you're cutting out the current safety net and bureaucracy that surrounds it, you can afford to give people an income that will provide for their basic survival needs.

ConfuciusSay··on Video games beat interviews to recruit the very best
This is awesome. I'll definitely become an avid player, right after I contribute meaningfully to several open source projects, have an active GitHub profile, while keeping my Stack Overflow reputation high, and having a fleshed out CodeCombat profile, and of course making sure my LinkedIn page is up to snuff.

I hope when I get this awesome job my employer doesn't mind me keeping all my profiles updated on company hours!

ConfuciusSay··on Is Betteridge's law of headlines correct?
Now do one about Moore's law.
ConfuciusSay··on Ask HN: Why is there no solution for direct democracy?
Fingerprint sensors that can't tell the difference between an image and a finger.
ConfuciusSay··on The Science of Why No One Agrees on the Color of This Dress
The only thing this scientifically proves is that marketing agencies are getting better and better at viral marketing.

Imagine that, that very same dress is now back in stock. Purchase one today! http://www.romanoriginals.co.uk/

ConfuciusSay··on Why Rockstar Developers Don't Ask for Help
Yeah, exactly. This seems to be what the criticism was, but seemingly the OP morphed that into "never ask for help". No, you should ask for help after you've spent a reasonable amount of time and effort going down the obvious solution paths first.

The power of the human species is that we're able to share knowledge. The undisputed best way to learn is through human collaboration. There's a reason why we've designed our education system with teachers/instructors etc. instead of locking students in an empty room with a text book.

The idea that you learn better if you bang your head against a wall for days is just flat out wrong. Perhaps if the person you're learning from is in competition with you, or is a terrible teacher, or doesn't like you, or is in a company culture that is against collaboration, but if you have a competent instructor, learning via collaboration is the undisputed best way to learn. That teacher can (and should) explain to you all the dead-end paths that you would have banged your head against yourself, in a matter of minutes, and you'll get all the same benefits out of it as if you had done it yourself.

ConfuciusSay··on Building Great Products Through Anarchy
Yeah, it has very little to do with actual anarchy.

A clickbait title in my HN? gasp

ConfuciusSay··on A simple Minecraft written in Rust
Nice job, now if you can make a simple Rust in Minecraft I'll be even more impressed!
ConfuciusSay··on Southern California Edison IT workers 'beyond furious' over H1-B replacements
Chill out everyone, like George Lucas said, technology companies "just don't have the margins" to pay employees market wages. That's why we need to flood the market with foreign workers who will accept peanuts for wages, and that's why we need to implement systemic wage-fixing (administered by Google's wage-o-meter algorithm).

The power of markets is awesome! Except when we let it determine wages organically, or when big banks fail - then it's bad!

ConfuciusSay··on Replacing Middle Management with APIs
Except if consumers don't have jobs they won't be able to purchase the products made by machines, therefore the owners will NOT make the money, and the economy will enter into a "death spiral".
ConfuciusSay··on New services expand IBM Watson capabilities to images, speech, and more
Now you can buy back stock algorithmically in the cloud!
ConfuciusSay··on YC startup accused of stealing design from CBInsights
Are you suggesting that excuses the copying?
ConfuciusSay··on Replacing Middle Management with APIs
Ahh yes, then we shall tax the machines!
ConfuciusSay··on Replacing Middle Management with APIs
The problem with your thinking is that you ignore the fact that socialist policies have been implemented successfully in all modern western democracies and somehow those societies haven't shattered yet. It's called a "mixed economy" and you're living in one right now.

The idea that we have to construct a society based on idealistic absolutes is nonsense. Some problems are more efficiently solved collectively, others are better solved by the power of the market. Let's harness the power of both.

If the day comes when AI abruptly puts huge percentages of the population out of work and our society faces collapse, one can easily envision a solution that implements structural changes that incorporates both the benefits of market forces and the efficiencies of collective resource pooling.

ConfuciusSay··on Replacing Middle Management with APIs
>what's qualitatively different between 70% of the population working with 30% on welfare, and 10% of the population working with 90% on welfare?

The government receives less tax revenues because 20% of the population is no longer working (and paying taxes). At some point if enough of the population is no longer contributing, unless there are massive changes in how we manage the economy, the country will become insolvent and won't be able to afford the welfare payments as tax revenue decreases.

ConfuciusSay··on Most people probably shouldn't go to school
You contradict yourself in the article.

You say that "Most people probably shouldn’t go to school" and that "you may just be better off not going to school", but when people call you out on that inane conclusion you tell them you're really just questioning the cost and length. OK, well, make up your mind then.

No doubt the education system should be more attuned to the trends in labor markets, and should be affordable to your average person. That's a far cry from "You probably shouldn't go to school".

ConfuciusSay··on Valve Economist Yanis Varoufakis Appointed Finance Minister of Greece
Economists might focus on that, but the point is that in actuality companies do not focus on 'providing the greatest possible benefit to the greatest number of people'.

Partially it's because that goal is far more difficult and complex than the simple aspirations of Greater Taylorism: to increase shareholder value. It's much easier to increase a stock price than it is to actually provide value for a large number of people, which leads to cases like IBM who spends billions buying back their stock while the actual value of their products declines to near zero.

ConfuciusSay··on Startup jobs with low salary and negligible equity, what gives?
Or getting "let go" 24 hours before vesting date.
ConfuciusSay··on Can Rap Genius Annotate the World?
No.

Next question!

ConfuciusSay··on How to Hire When Everyone Wants to Found Their Own Startup
Also, even with the best equity agreement, you can still get royally screwed when it comes down to the wire.
