ComposedPattern··on UK Parliament undermined the privacy, security, freedom of all internet users
Children, who don't experience sexual desire, are not interested in pornography. Whenever I encountered lewd content as a child, my reaction was always "uggh... adults are so gross" and I'd skip over it if I could. Children don't seek out pornography, and they spend almost all their time online on platforms like YouTube that don't host pornography that they might see inadvertently. And if they did see porn for whatever reason – why is this supposed to be such a big deal? As far as I can tell, the harm that comes from a child seeing porn is that they'll be grossed out. It seems roughly as bad as seeing the corpse of a rabbit that was run over by a car – a shame, but not something that we need to Do Something About. People act like encountering sexual content will somehow warp children's minds and make them homosexuals or deviants or something, but as far as I know this isn't based on any scientific evidence. It's entirely about adults' feelings.

Why does only one country get its data subdivided by ethnicity? I imagine that most countries have some groups that score better than others. Most ethnic minorities in Asia are "Asian", but in the 21st century there are plenty of non-white people in European countries.

Yeah, as a vegan who shuns proprietary software, I think this is a great analogy. It works regardless of which side you're on. In both cases, GP would probably say "that's way too restrictive," but I'd say "get over it, some things are more important than convenience."

Gods don't have persistent bodies or brains. They're spirits.

I don't disagree that digital systems with neural architectures could have agency in principle, but agency generally is definitely not the output of a large language model. Animals without language have agency, in that that they take actions to fulfill their desires. Current LLMs may have some degree of intelligence, but they don't even appear to have any consistent wishes or desires. You can get them to talk longingly about x... until you give another prompt and suddenly x doesn't matter to them at all.

I find this version of the story very odd. I'm in my mid-20s and figured out that I was trans about 10 years ago. The main reason I didn't get swept up in the anti-SJW craze of the time was because "SJWs" were firmly supportive of trans and non-binary people, while many of their opponents were either indifferent or comparing us to attack helicopters. Are you talking about more than ten years ago?

> Not providing a 10 year old with puberty blockers when you suspect that it is because the child has been manipulated into believing that they have gender dysphoria is practicing medicine. So I am not proposing that we deny anyone access to medicine.

Of course if there were some specific reason to believe that the child was being manipulated, then it would be medically appropriate not to treat them with puberty blockers. But you said "this is a serious hole in the argument for providing gender affirming care to children" as if you think this should be the overriding concern even when there's no specific evidence that the child is being manipulated. That is what I take issue with.

Suppose that we were discussing an influencer parent who was exploiting their child's blindness for social media views. Would you be telling people that it's just as likely as not that the child is just pretending to be blind to satisfy the parent with Munchhausen's? If not, you're special pleading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_pleading.

> Parents with Munchausen's manipulating their prepubescent children into socially transitioning is a good explanation for the rise in prepubscent children socially transitioning

It's a very poor explanation, because more people of all ages are transitioning more than in the past, not just prepubescent children. It also stands against an obvious and much simpler explanation, which is that children today are more likely to encounter the idea that someone can be trans and much less likely to be told to suppress non-normative gendered behavior.

> we must allow ourselves to consider the possibility that it happens a lot, since Munchausen's is at least as common as gender dysphoria.

You say that as if it means that a given child presenting with gender dysphoria is just as likely to have Munchausen's by proxy as actual gender dysphoria. But there are tens of thousands of possible conditions someone with Munchausen's might imitate instead. We should expect that the fraction of them that imitate gender dysphoria is dwarfed by the number of people who actually have gender dysphoria.

It's telling that your argument is entirely theoretical. If there were a significant number of children manipulated into socially transitioning because of Munchausen's by proxy, there would be actual confirmed examples to refer to. If it were a large-scale social problem, there would be data on its prevalence. But there isn't, because this is a scenario fabricated to apply unjustified scrutiny to children with gender dysphoria.

ComposedPattern··on Influencer parents and the kids who had their childhood made into content
Ignoring the fact that 8-year-olds do not receive medical treatment for gender dysphoria, is the existence of Munchausen's by proxy also "a serious hole in the argument" for providing children with medical care in general?

Sorry, I forget that I have to explain when I'm being sarcastic on Hacker News. The actual number of clear clusters I found was zero, maybe 2. The four groups I colored on the chart seem to follow the cleavages just as well as the ones shown originally, but they don't map to our culture's understanding of race at all. If we lived in a culture that believed that Europeans and Indigenous Alaskans were part of the same race, they could support that idea using that chart.

Perhaps more dimensions would reveal five or so clear clusters that correspond exactly to the races listed in the US census, but I suspect what it would actually reveal is that population genetics is really complicated and has lots of counter-intuitive cases that defy most people's naive expectations.

Hmm... the first question I asked was for "Sapiens" by Yuval Harari: "Is liberalism a religion?" This was one of the more interesting points that the book made very explicitly:

> The modern age has witnessed the rise of a number of new natural-law religions, such as liberalism, Communism, capitalism, nationalism and Nazism. These creeds do not like to be called religions, and refer to themselves as ideologies. But this is just a semantic exercise. If a religion is a system of human norms and values that is founded on belief in a superhuman order, then Soviet Communism was no less a religion than Islam.

But it answered:

> No, liberalism is not a religion. It is a political and economic ideology that believes in individual rights and freedoms, limited government, and the rule of law. It is based on the principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity.
