CommanderData··on GenZ treat employers like bad dates 93% ghost interviews 87% don't show for work
Hopefully it doesn't change until employers start valuing the workforce less like a commodity.
CommanderData··on The U.S. Government Will Soon Spend More on Interest Payments Than Defense
Disarmament goes in hand with being less aggressive in other parts of the world.

Practically means receding army bases including the biggest American outpost the US has in the middle east at the moment (I'll let you guess which country that is).

It will never happen because it does not align at all with it's foreign / soft expansion policies.

CommanderData··on Sora: Creating video from text
All the software engineers and VFX people training to become plumbers. I'm afraid your clients will be jobless or underpaid by that time.

Jokes aside. It's becoming more apparent, Power will further concentrate to big tech firms.

CommanderData··on Queer.af Mastodon instance has been shut down by the Taliban
Not sure what they were expecting.

A bit like registering anti-ccp with a Chinese TLD.

Shouldn't be shocked when it gets pulled.

CommanderData··on Microsoft's Fast

CommanderData··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
I'd like to compare yours to all streaming sites I've used, which are riddled with ads and deceptive clicks.
CommanderData··on Physical cash is dying–and you don't need to be a conspiracist to worry
The ability to shutdown any persons the government doesn't like using any growing list of $Excuses is worrying.

Currency is a freedom to perform transaction and arguably a given right, it's existed since humans learnt trade.

Cash allows anyone to transact without a prerequisite or control. Two parties. Centralised digital currency will change it.

That worry doesn't even include the privacy concerns and as systems become centralised either through standards or legislation. It will be easy to track someones habits or location globally.

CommanderData··on Alzheimer’s cases tied to no-longer-used medical procedure
Do you mean HSV? I have seen articles implicating that virus but it's the first time I've heard of a HPV association.
CommanderData··on U.S. army drops requirement for high school diploma (2022)
Looks like there's going to be another war.
CommanderData··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
I complained a few months ago that HN was the other way about an article that was 'disappeared' from HN on the atrocities in Gaza at the hands of Israel, it had scholarly backing.

Your comment doesn't stand to any reason and discussion here on HN are highly moderated, in my opinion at times it's balanced towards Israel as the term 'anti-semitim' is thrown around to stop any discussion and valid criticism about the Gaza war.

You can't appease everyone and 'anti-Semitism' has been weaponised very successfully by people who know exactly what they're doing.

CommanderData··on Amazon's Ring to stop letting police request doorbell video from users
Do Ring doorbells allow users to connect directly to video streams via RTSP or similar?
CommanderData··on Gene therapy allows an 11-year-old boy to hear
This could lead a way to fix Tinnitus, there's many causes of Tinnitus but it's almost always thought to be trauma to the Cochlea organ / structure.

There's many cells involved in sensing and relaying signals to the brain, and are damaged by a growing list of things (Antibiotics, viral, Osteoporosis, lack of blood flow, Acoustic trauma, protein loss - long lived proteins in the Cochlea). Even our own immune system has the ability to damage the Cochlea.

There is actually limited recovery of the OHC's at least but lack of regeneration potential. If there's a path to regenerate, it could one day fix the underlying cause and with this news it seems we're closer than we ever have been.

CommanderData··on Gene therapy allows an 11-year-old boy to hear
Not directly, but breaking it down - they've successfully delivered viral code to inner hair cells.

I have been following Tinnitus for quite a while now and it's assumed it's caused by some form of trauma to the Cochlear, either auditory nerve, IHC/OHC or SGN cells. Even with patient's with no record to prior trauma (potentially immune system dysfunction or compromised blood labyrinth barrier / BLB).

Now if this is continues to show success we could start seeing more therapies targeting the Cochlear by way of gene therapy and it potentially helping people with Tinnitus by treating it's underlying cause. I.e. Regenerating lost cells in the Cochlear.

CommanderData··on Gene therapy allows an 11-year-old boy to hear
If true this is ground breaking news especially in the Audiology community.

There is zero treatment besides hearing aids / cochlear implants for sensory hearing loss in Human history until now.

CommanderData··on Vistex CEO Sanjay Shah dies on stage after freak accident
I have 3 South Asians in my team and completely agree with you about class work or talent. It's taken the best part of 5 years to curate the best from offshore to eventually offering onshore jobs.

We now all complain about the same issues; lack of care, pride of work or worksmanship.

They now manage offshore and treat them with alot more humanity. Sometimes will resort to 'ill speech' because they say 'it's how things work there as a boss otherwise they climb ontop of your head' which always makes me laugh when they say it.

CommanderData··on Vistex CEO Sanjay Shah dies on stage after freak accident
I was told by an Indian work colleague that it's a matter of culture and stems from something along the analogy he gave of 'bare minimum', 'if I can get away with it'.

It probably explains why I've seen offshore teams verbally abused and oppressively micro-managed by their managers, to extents that treatment would be illegal in the West.

I'd feel anxious if any life critical sector or even piece of software was developed from any of the large Indian consultancies I've had the displeasure of working with. As this attitude manifests itself almost every time sometime is delivered.

There's a shrew of threads on HN about poor, contaminated pharmaceuticals from India e.g. eye drops. The UK governments website on drug recalls have a large number of Indian manufactured products.

CommanderData··on Ask HN: What's the best car without undesirable features?
Well I can't help with your other requirements but some Mercedes dealerships will remove the modem at a cost.

It's apparently a common request among people of certain professions.

Not sure if all models support it but I have spoken to someone who has had it done on a relatively new car (2020)

CommanderData··on Microsoft overtakes Apple as most valuable company
Apple needs to become a player in the cloud space. OS agnostic just like the other three big players.

It's a big mistake they didn't invest in the space earlier.

CommanderData··on Britain's got some of Europe's toughest surveillance laws. Now it wants more
> at least it's warm indoors, unlike in England.

Haha, that hit very hard after speaking to a home developer at how dire the building regulations are in the UK compared to the EU or even the US with the gov actively subverting better building efficiency regs.

Cronyism is rife in the UK, it's so open it stinks.

CommanderData··on 7 watts idle – building a low powered server/NAS on Intel 12th/13th gen
Yes, it's the OS that ships with their hardware. DSM 7 being their latest.
CommanderData··on 7 watts idle – building a low powered server/NAS on Intel 12th/13th gen
Convience is nice and something they do really well. Rocksolid for me for 3+ years. A recent issue with a my failed cache drive. Within 2 days the issue triaged and investigated by their devs. The experience was great.
CommanderData··on 7 watts idle – building a low powered server/NAS on Intel 12th/13th gen
My point about Synology being the MS of NAS is actually about this. Spend a little development time making DSM more portable but with a caveat of no support on non-Synology hw.

I think we'd still arrive at a weird place where we see people buying Asustor or other NAS hw just to run DSM even if it's not supported and but not a complete hack.

People buy convenience and DSM offers everything NAS related it really well.

I suppose they have internal plans to make DSM go the other way and lock out attempts like Xpenology. They aren't late either as other rival is still miles behind.

CommanderData··on 7 watts idle – building a low powered server/NAS on Intel 12th/13th gen
Great hardware but when the software is a job to administer I have a hard time justifying builds like these.

My Synology NAS for example has 8 GB RAM and a J4150 processor. Runs about 15 containers, Wireguard and on top DSM (which is Synology's OS). Usually idles around 1-3%.

Software makes all the difference - DSM has been by far the biggest benefit and surprise to me and I would be deprived of time with anything else. I'm running TrueNas as a second backup server but it no way compares to DSM. Sometimes I don't want to trawl through logs and trial and error just to get a basic CRON setup to backup a file off another server, there's countless examples where DSM has just worked.

I really think Synology is missing a trick here, they clearly have software that is miles ahead of everything else and customizable should you need to. They should be more like Microsoft of the NAS world, making DSM run on non Synology platforms, or at least making it easier to do yourself. It's a great OS and it sells itself and can easily be a way to up sell stuff like Active backup for business.

CommanderData··on Meta censors pro-Palestinian views on a global scale, report claims
I respect that you've commented. It was something I upvoted. I checked through my upvoted submissions at the time and could no longer find it which was a first for me as either would expect it to have been flagged or deleted but shown.

I remember being a little shocked when it was on the front page and shortly after was not. I've checked again from <4 months. Wonder if anyone else can recall the URL - I just remember it was a collective scholarly opinion with condemnation on the situation, it may not have been from opinionjuris but the article was very similar.

CommanderData··on Meta censors pro-Palestinian views on a global scale, report claims
There was a post upvoted highly at the beginning of this current war, by scholar opinions about the situation in Palestine but it was removed completely, not just flagged or deleted. But full removal which I've not observed before on HN.

It was something like this https://opiniojuris.org/2023/10/18/public-statement-scholars...

HN claims they are different but they sensor more than Reddit, where at least have to be astroturfed with a majority.

CommanderData··on HTML hacks that shaped the Internet
Remember when we rounded corners using images placed at each corner.

It was a nightmare.

CommanderData··on Paperless-Ngx v2.0.0
I wish paperless-ngx included native advertising to printers for the "Sent to PC" feature.

Last I checked it doesn't and had to run a separate service to advertise to the printer the paperless endpoint.

CommanderData··on In June 2024, ad blockers such as uBlock Origin will be disabled in Chrome 127
It's DNS level adblocking, so no.

E.g. If sites used a hardcoded IP address, pihole will be useless. Same applies if devices such as TVs use their own DNS/DNS over TLS.

Sort of see IP + DNS blocking catching on next once pihole becomes ineffective.

CommanderData··on Advertiser exodus expected to deeply impact X ad revenue, analysis indicates
I didn't even consider Media Matter's interests here, Twitter generally would be a threat to their power and this is just fuel for their fire.
