ColdTakes··on Inconvenient truths about the fires burning in Los Angeles from two fire experts
I lived in California for 26 years. If this is true, nobody listens.
ColdTakes··on Making an intersection unsafe for pedestrians to save seconds for drivers
You can not say this without the caveat that it is location dependent. This is an illegal action in some cities and states. Like in California, where that video was taken, yellow means STOP if you can safely do so. Both of these cars had ample time to stop and chose to accelerate to make the light.
ColdTakes··on Show HN: A blocklist to remove spam and bad websites from search results
You don't need an account for DDG. I assume the record keeping for which sites you exclude is cookie or session based.
ColdTakes··on Show HN: A blocklist to remove spam and bad websites from search results
DuckDuckGo and Kagi allow you to remove entire sites from search results and it is the best feature of these websites.
ColdTakes··on [dead]
And so the zombie apocalypse begins.
ColdTakes··on The Origins of Wokeness
> You can't just make any shit up and get away with it.

Trump and Elon Musk literally just make any shit up and get away with it.

ColdTakes··on The Origins of Wokeness
1. The Biden admin is already suing them for a different reason.

2. The Biden admin won't be there to sue them in 7 days.

3. I'm not saying this didn't happen, I'm saying Zuckerberg is a habitual liar and I wouldn't believe him if he said his name was Mark.

ColdTakes··on The Origins of Wokeness
"News"

I'm not saying this didn't happen but I wouldn't trust Mark Zuckerberg if he said the sky was blue. He is trying to curry favor with the new administration and he is not above lying or embellishing what really happened.

ColdTakes··on The Origins of Wokeness
I know why the rule exist. Getting banned for a rule that did not exist at the time is an overreach from a self-proclaimed free speech absolutist.
ColdTakes··on The Origins of Wokeness
The user says they were banned within hours of Elon taking over Twitter. New Parody rules did not come into affect until November 2022.
ColdTakes··on The Origins of Wokeness
The title.

>It's worth noting that the title of this article

ColdTakes··on The Origins of Wokeness
This is clearly not an imitation. Parody if nothing else which is protected by fair use.
ColdTakes··on Let's Quit X
Please indulge in my conspiracy theory as to why Bluesky will likely end up in the same place as Twitter[0].

ColdTakes··on Luck Be a Landlord Might Be Banned from Google Play
There is a version of Solitaire that is a gambling game. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker_squares
ColdTakes··on Luck Be a Landlord Might Be Banned from Google Play
The lack of consistency is the entire point. The rest of your points don't matter to me in this discussion because whether or not games that have mechanics that look like gambling should be age gated doesn't matter when companies are playing both sides.
ColdTakes··on Luck Be a Landlord Might Be Banned from Google Play
This isn't a lack of consistency, it is policy. The biggest games on mobile are gacha games which are all gambling with cutesy characters. You are giving Google the benefit of doubt when they don't deserve it.

Should Luck be a Landlord be banned from the Play Store? I don't care but pick a side. If you're against it then be against all of it and not just the part of it that doesn't make you a ton of money.

ColdTakes··on Luck Be a Landlord Might Be Banned from Google Play
There is a clone of Luck Be a Landlord named Random Card created by a South Korean developer that included microtransactions and gacha elements and Google gave that game an award.

https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2022/07/google-pla...

So in Google's eyes, actual gambling is fine but simulated gambling is not even though both of them look like the exact same type of gambling. The only difference between the two is that in one situation Google gets a larger kickback.

ColdTakes··on Zuckerberg approved training Llama on LibGen [pdf]
There isn't going to be a revolution. Americans are all talk no action.
ColdTakes··on H-1B visa lottery is shutting out top talent
The company hiring an H-1B has to plenty of fees, needs authorizations, and then needs to submit a lot of documentation to the Immigration service for processing that can take 3 months and still get denied. Many companies just say they won't transfer H-1Bs rather than deal with the trouble.
ColdTakes··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
You're contradicting yourself. You yourself say there is plenty of interesting discussion but what interesting discussion is there on reddit if it is just people patting themselves on the back?
ColdTakes··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
Fully grown adults believe the Earth is flat or that we have never been space to and dismissing them as just trolls is doing the same thing you are accusing me of doing and not allowing "space for opposing views."
ColdTakes··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
I don't see any benefit in entertaining flat-Earthers in discussion.
ColdTakes··on H-1B visa lottery is shutting out top talent
I'm sure people are very productive when they have a metaphorical gun to the head.
ColdTakes··on H-1B visa lottery is shutting out top talent
It is not about wage suppression. It is about obedience. An H-1B visa is the biggest chance for upward mobility people from less wealthy countries will get. Listen to whatever we tell you to do, work however many hours we tell you to work, or get fired and sent back to your own country.
ColdTakes··on H-1B visa lottery is shutting out top talent
We have a supply of domestic nurses that travel to these areas. Why do they need foreign visas? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what the Dutch Auction is.
ColdTakes··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
Both /r/Science and /r/AskScience are very heavily moderated and verified industry experts discuss papers on it.
ColdTakes··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
It would help the conversation if you expound on your experiences on implementation.
ColdTakes··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
That title image looks like it is from the set of a sitcom starring Mark Zuckerberg.

DEI initiatives have always been a dog and pony show, not a thing executives have ever truly cared about and they are now in a political environment where they can show what they believe in. People will learn the hard way these companies have never cared about you.
