> don't know what else would bother you?

Like I said, it’s queasiness/stigma about hygiene, not a reasoned thought. This is a common sentiment in the US- we like to buy our sex toys new, for another example, even though they’re usually made of materials that lend themselves to cleaning/sterilization.

CoffeeOnWrite··on Into Thin AirPods
One thing that strikes me about the story- I guess not everyone is queasy about putting things in their ears that have spent a lot of time in another person’s ears? (I wouldn’t think they would be attractive theft targets, because of hygiene/stigma)
CoffeeOnWrite··on Into Thin AirPods
I returned a pair of Air Pods a month ago using “reverse Lost Mode” where you use your phone to request the contact info from the Air Pods.

I got my iPhone back at a giant music festival the old fashioned way- calling it and the do gooder answered.

CoffeeOnWrite··on Building GitHub with Ruby on Rails
Thanks for correcting me (sincerely)

> but if you are using something before defining it you are going to crash so that's definitely one way of distinguishing it.

Would you clarify? Like that was my point, casually using something where `nil` is a possible assigned value, or maybe the variable hasn't been defined, makes possible the (sadly common) category of bugs where the program does not crash, but proceeds as though the variable was assigned `nil`, but actually the variable was never defined.

In contrast to local variables where the program will crash if you reference the variable but it hasn't been defined.

My comment meant "bare instance variables in Ruby are not great [and we might not want to recommend them as a solution to people complaining about Ruby/Rails quirks]". Do you disagree and actually love the behavior of Ruby instance variables? Or are you simply technically correcting me? (which, again, I appreciate)

Instance variables, you mean those beloved things in Ruby that cannot be distinguished between not having been defined versus having being assigned the value `nil`? :p

I believe so, I have read it in, ahem, books.
CoffeeOnWrite··on San Francisco Bay Area to phase out natural gas heating appliances
Ah, thanks for pointing this out!
CoffeeOnWrite··on San Francisco Bay Area to phase out natural gas heating appliances
It’s not about the appliances, it’s about the energy supply. The California electric grid isn’t super reliable.
CoffeeOnWrite··on San Francisco Bay Area to phase out natural gas heating appliances
What’s your point? Nobody is discussing building new buildings with fireplaces or adding fireplaces to existing buildings when converting their heat from gas to electric (I’m pretty sure neither of these activities are even allowed in the Bay Area!)
CoffeeOnWrite··on San Francisco Bay Area to phase out natural gas heating appliances
It's part of a bigger movement away from gas, eg. https://barc.ca.gov/whats-happening/news/berkeley-becomes-fi...

It seems like a big deal to me to go from two redundant energy sources to one without discussing the trade offs in resiliency. I agree with OP, that there will be a large of human cost to giving up gas heat without making a corresponding investment in the reliability of the electric grid (which I have never seen mentioned). My impression is that the total cost to the decision to phase out gas has not been crunched.

Pushing it to individuals to be prepared for electric grid failure is pretty bad for carbon and pollution. All those generators (and other emergency backup appliances) manufactured and maintained. I personally prefer having gas and electric, I feel that gives me adequate reliability, so I don't need to own a generator: I have my gas heat (millivolt pilot generator requires no AC power), gas hot water, candles, and flashlights. And I like not owning a generator (or emergency propane heater (aren't these commonly implicated in structure fires? [0]), etc). Plus many people can't afford generators.

CoffeeOnWrite··on SirTunnel, a personal ngrok alternative
Heh it does say

> It's that simple there's no authentication at all

In practice it should require ssh key auth, that’s what I’ve always done. But without requiring password. And limited to just being able to create tunnels via the ForceCommand sshd config.

CoffeeOnWrite··on SirTunnel, a personal ngrok alternative
If you already have nginx and want to avoid extra dependencies, another option is https://gist.github.com/gdamjan/4586758 .

(I’d love to hear what SirTunnel and caddy bring to the table! I think the auto registering of tunnels is certainly less hacky than the approach in the above gist, but on its own that’s not enough for me to care..)

Very cool.

Pedantic but suggest title rename to say “SF Bay Area” or “inner SF Bay Area”. SF is just a small portion of the coverage area.

CoffeeOnWrite··on When is short tenure a red flag?
Shipping is important, but what’s just as important is learning the impact of what exactly you shipped and how you shipped it. In software this is often done by operating and modifying the system in a series of experiments over time, including observing the relationship between the product and the organization that produces and maintains it, gaining insight into the delivery of software at scale.

For many of us, what we learn in meaningful stretches at companies, is a kind of capital that we leverage to gain access to opportunities that take our career in the direction we want to go.

If I may speculate, perhaps you are overqualified for the jobs you describe. Or, perhaps you love creating new things but not maintaining and augmenting existing things (which is fine, but just like short stints, is a quality that many hiring managers, especially at established companies, view as a negative. You could be an amazing serial startup 0 to 1 person though).

Also if you quit quickly, you can leave it off your resume. This is especially valuable to squeeze in extra chances to join the right startup as an employee, over your career, in between the 2-4+ year stretches engaging deeply in the good growthful roles.

CoffeeOnWrite··on Bikes, not self driving cars, are the technological gateway to urban progress
Yep. A driver pulled suddenly in front of me into the bike lane I was in, to pass cars to make his right turn, saving him maybe 30 seconds. He didn’t check for me, hit his brakes to make the turn, and I had to split lanes left to avoid impact. Luckily I was familiar with this stretch of road and paying extremely close attention, and the other cars were driving safely, else I would have had a very bad day.

I confronted him and his response was “Well we didn’t collide, what more could you ask for?”
