Chris911··on Don't fall into the anti-AI hype
Instead of rewriting yourself have you tried telling the agent what it did wrong and do the rewrite with it? Then at the end of the session ask it to extract a set of rules that would have helped to get it right the first time. Save that in AGENTS.md. If you and your team do this a few times it can lead to only having to rewrite 5% of the code instead of 70%.
Chris911··on River: A fast, robust job queue for Go and Postgres
The job is queued as part of the transaction. It is executed by a worker outside the scope of the transaction.

Most new buildings at Microsoft now have open office plans.
Chris911··on iMac Pro
This is not even close to the other product pages on Apple's website. Feels like it was made 5 years ago.
Chris911··on Ask HN: Do you still use RSS if not what else?
Yes. RSS with the Feeder Chrome extension.
Chris911··on Ask HN: What simple tools or products are you most proud of making?
iStats - https://github.com/Chris911/iStats

Wanted a command line tool to show OS X stats. Browse Stack Overflow and a bunch of forums to find that nothing existed. I believe it is now the go-to tool for this.

Chris911··on After a year of using Node.js in production
Most of the problems described in the articles can be solved by simply using promises. Error handling is centralized in your chain and any function can throw and just like Python or Ruby you can catch anywhere you want. As for consistency between callbacks, promises and generators, just pick one. We switched from callbacks to promises and it was a great move. Error handling greatly improved and the code looks a lot nicer. No more callbacks hell. Ever.

We switched our backend from Python to Node almost 2 years ago now and it was a great decision for us. If you handle a code base that deals with a lot of async requests Node is definitely a top contender.

Chris911··on Ask HN: Moving Out of Silicon Valley because of housing? Where to?
What do you think is the average software developer salary in Montreal?
Chris911··on Show HN: HN Replies – Get notified of replies to your comments
Nice. I built a similar service for HN comments, Github stars and other small things like that a while (still running). Is your code open-source?

Chris911··on TrendMicro Node.js HTTP server listening on localhost can execute commands
From the email thread:

> I happened to notice that the /api/showSB endpoint will spawn an ancient build of Chromium (version 41) with --disable-sandbox. To add insult to injury, they append "(Secure Browser)" to the UserAgent.

> I sent a mail saying "That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen".

This is indeed unbelievably ridiculous.

Chris911··on SqlPad: Run SQL in your browser and chart the results

Chris911··on Counting Objects
Look at the bottom of the blog post for commits involved in merging these changes upstream for Git 2.0. They are all from vmg.
Chris911··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2015)
Montreal, Canada - Full Time - Onsite

Busbud (https://www.busbud.com) is looking for Node.JS developers.

We mostly use Node.JS, postgresql, express, React.

You'll design, document, create and improve the Busbud API and everything behind it, powering mobile apps, websites, partners and analytics. You'll work with our web and app teams to evolve the API, with our integrations team to improve feature coverage and with the dev team as a whole to improve performance and reliability. And most importantly, you'll help users buy their tickets and get to their travel destination.

Listing: https://busbud.bamboohr.com/jobs/ or send me an email at christophe@busbud.com

Chris911··on Show HN: My first tiny web service, a simple key/value store
Another kind of abuse could be to store huge chunk of data per key. Even with 10,000 keys if each key stores a 50 MB JSON blob you're storage cost could go up quickly.
Chris911··on GraphQL Introduction
The reasons they list in favour of GraphQL vs REST and Ad HOC APIs are really convincing. Being a developer for an API that powers multiple mobile applications and a website this looks really interesting and would solve a lot of problems we have right now. Unfortunately I know it would probably take too much time to re-implement all our backend and clients to even think about using this in a near future.
Chris911··on Why Racket? Why Lisp? (2014)
What is a good resource to learn Lisp for an advanced (non Lisp) programmer? Most guides for most languages only cover declaration, simple functions and tiny applications. I want something that quickly goes through the basics and skips to advanced uses in bigger codebases.
Chris911··on Ask HN: What's the best way to write an API spec?
We use Swagger at work. Thanks for this!
Chris911··on Stack Exchange for Emacs
I build something similar for Atom a few months ago[1] and while some people liked the idea a lot of comments were negative and turned around that fact that programming is not about copy/pasting and plagiarism. Now a similar project is built but for emacs and comments about the concept of having a client inside an editor is interesting and powerful.

Chris911··on Show HN: PSequel – a free PostgreSQL GUI Tool for Mac OS X
I see "Query bookmark" in the TODO list. I've been looking a simple, clean PostgreSQL "bookmark manager" that will just hold and execute my saved queries. Would really like to see this feature implemented.
