Chestofdraw··on New Cambridge Analytica Leaks
To add to that, Vote Leave used AggregateIQ which is essentially the same company as CA.
Chestofdraw··on On the Homogenizing Dangers of Easily Translated Literature (2016)
As a general nerd I feel like this is a common experience and one that I've quite enjoyed when reading countless sci-fi/fantasy books.

You start of and many cultural references or things seem completely alien and only start to click once you're part way through.

Chestofdraw··on European Parliament approves copyright reform
>Brexit vote should never have been legally binding

It should have been legally binding, if it had been then it could have been challenged in court and very likely would have been overturned due to the cheating of the leave campaigns.

Chestofdraw··on Stress Mess: 3 in 5 Millennials Say Life More Stressful Now Than Ever Before
If you read a little further the reason for the study not mentioning serious causes of stress becomes apparent -

>the survey of 2,000 American millennials, commissioned by CBD oil company

It's basically an ad for CBD. "Take this to stop worrying about instagram likes and traffic jams." might shift some units but "Take this to stop giving a shit about climate change." probably wouldn't sit well with the target market.

Chestofdraw··on How to Brexit? – Explore the (im)possibilities of the different Brexit scenarios
Problem with the Tories not blinking is that they don't have a majority in parliament. They're currently being propped up (they have a confidence and supply arrangement) by the DUP who are very much against a sea border and would likely vote against a deal that had a sea border and doing so could bring down the government.
Chestofdraw··on UK Pub chain JD Wetherspoon shuts its social media accounts
There are ongoing investigations into the leave campaigns (which Wetherspoons was a part of), new evidence was published last week and a few people are appearing in front of a HoC committee this week.

So the timing isn't really odd and I don't think they're doing it because they're sorry about supporting Brexit. There's a reasonable chance that they've shared data or spent funds in a way that would find them on the wrong side of the investigation.

Chestofdraw··on How to Get Rich Playing Video Games Online
Depends on what the streamers thing is really, someone like Arteezy can easily pull in 10-20k viewers without even using a mic or cam.

Though for people like him streaming isn't what they use to make a living either.

Chestofdraw··on Süddeutsche Zeitung Became the Go-To Place for Leaks Like the Paradise Papers
Opinion pieces have a bright orange banner and use that same colour elsewhere in the articles, it's also used on the links to the opinion pieces. What else could they be doing to point out the difference? How could they make it more clear than heavy use of colour coding?
Chestofdraw··on How we built the unbeatable Dota 2 bot
It's very misleading. It's not a Dota 2 AI it's a 1v1 SF mid AI. It's not undefeated, Suma1l and another pro beat it.

I think there is a fair argument for Dota being vastly more complex than Go but there almost certainly isn't for 1v1 SF mid.

Chestofdraw··on OpenAI at the Dota 2 World Championships
I haven't actually made an 'It's impressive.. but' comment yet but I've wanted to so here's why I'd say that.

Firstly, much like most things a lot of the press releases have been pretty disingenuous. I'm pretty salty about Elon Musks tweet -

> OpenAI first ever to defeat world's best players in competitive eSports. Vastly more complex than traditional board games like chess & Go.

1v1 SF mid is several orders of magnitude less complex than an actual game of dota and probably a lot less complex than chess & Go as well. More than that, 1v1 showcases haven't been a thing for quite a while now for good reasons, the last time they did a 1v1 showcase was at TI4 (in 2014). When they did these the format was best of 3 with the first two games being QoP VS Puck and then the decider would be SF VS SF. This was done because QoP VS Puck is a very mind gamey, strategic, match-up whereas SF VS SF heavily emphasizes mechanical skill where you can snowball off of last hits and denies, giving the match-up more of a sudden death feel. You'd expect a bot to be very good at the SF match-up but struggle with the QoP / Puck match-up where there is a lot more decision space.

To go back to what I said about 1v1 showcases not really being a thing anymore: Back in Dendi's day mid was actually a solo lane but these days in a real game the mid has to constantly be aware of support rotations. The bots super aggressive positioning would be heavily punished even in fairly low MMR pubs so I suspect the pros have deeply ingrained positioning rules that make them hesitate rather than match the bots stance.

All that said, the bot is really impressive and I can't wait for the 5v5 bot next year. It will be super interesting to see what strats it goes for and how much it emphasizes the bots inhuman reaction times / micro skill.

Chestofdraw··on Will the high-tech cities of the future be utterly lonely?
Swap out 'cereal box' for 'WoW char' or similar and it's already a reality for some.
Chestofdraw··on Trump Sends Pharma Stocks Down with New Tweet on Drug Prices
> Americans subsidize drugs for the rest of the world.

Complete nonsense. I see this regurgitated again and again with nothing to back it up and it falls apart under the slightest inspection.

Chestofdraw··on World War Meme
> a massive voter-base of disenfranchised American workers, nearly completely ignored by the administrations of the past 25 years.

I think most people accept that but it does still leave the question, 'why Trump?'

Chestofdraw··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
+1 for Robert Welch knives, have a few myself. My friend, who's a CDP at a double starred place, said they were comparable to his Globals when he tried them out too.
Chestofdraw··on Theresa May: UK must leave European single market
I'll tell you what, we can talk about the efficacy of the various leave campaigns when the NHS gets its 350 million a day and we have 'Sovereignty'.
Chestofdraw··on Theresa May: UK must leave European single market
> it was a key stated pledge of the leave campaign

Which leave campaign? There was a few of them and they didn't give a consistent message. None actually have any power to implement anything so how can they make pledges anyway?

Also, that link has the picture of the bus as the first image... a 'pledge' completely based on lies that was dropped literally minutes after the vote.

Chestofdraw··on Theresa May: UK must leave European single market
> Leaving the EU means leaving the single market, and a majority voted for that.

Stop this revisionism.

Chestofdraw··on The Price of Anarchy
Why do you assume that the big set is altruistic? Isn't it selfishly trying to optimize towards its goal, at the detriment of some single units.
Chestofdraw··on Concrete AI tasks for forecasting (2014)
The more units thing is part of the reason I think Dota is a better challenge, I can't help but feel a SC2 AI could use inhuman micro as a crutch whereas in Dota mechanical / micro skill doesn't provide quite as big an advantage.

Not too sure what you mean by 'rushes can be punitive' but Dota certainly has a variety of early game aggression strats which tend to be high risk / reward and are seen fairly regularly.

Chestofdraw··on Concrete AI tasks for forecasting (2014)
I'd really love to see -

'Beat tier one teams at least 50% of the time in Dota 2 across multiple patches'

It's cool that people are starting to work on Starcraft 2 AIs but the game is kind of dead so competition at the top isn't going to be as strong as it is in more popular games. Also I think Dota presents a much more interesting and more difficult challenge for AI makers.

Chestofdraw··on Sweden reveals results from pilot of 30-hour work week
> Why does anyone work eight? Or ten? Or twelve? Did this 8 to 10 hour per day thing get sprung on people and forced upon them from nowhere? No. Of course not. It's something that achieved a "natural" balance over decades (centuries?). And the balance has hundreds of variables driving it. From personal happiness to international competitiveness and productivity with even more variables across varied industries and cultures.

People work 8 hour days because left wing labour movements, unions, and politicians argued for it. Much like some people in Sweden are doing now. Some companies / countries tried it and found it to be good, so it spread. Prior to that working days would be between 10 and 16 hours, six days a week. I'm sure many people argued as you are now, 'only the lazy want to work less than 16 hours a day', 'it won't work logically', 'it will be impossible to implement'. Turns out they were wrong and you probably are too.

Chestofdraw··on Harassment at Apple: A personal perspective
Sorry but this comment is just incredibly stupid. You (probably) have the right to free speech but you aren't forced to spew bile constantly. You might have the right to bear arms but you wouldn't be forced to carry an AR-15 24/7. Having the right to something means it can't be taken from you, not that you can't give it up. I worked as a chef for many years and many workers rights (particularly the EU working directive) are simply incompatible with the industry. Does this mean I was unable to work? Did the industry collapse? No. I just signed a waiver each time I started a new job.

c) Is actually an interesting subject and personally I do not agree with having a minimum wage and I feel that the purpose of introducing it was to undermine unions. There is a lot more to say about min wage but this comment thread is probably not the place for it. The rest of your post is, objectively, nonsense.

Chestofdraw··on Harassment at Apple: A personal perspective
Unions have fought for and won such a huge amount of the workers rights we enjoy today that it would be a disservice to try and cover all of them in a comment. Google is your friend if you'd like to learn about the history of unions and labour movements.
Chestofdraw··on Harassment at Apple: A personal perspective
> They exist to parasitically take your money, forcibly take others who don't want to give and really offer very little in return other than more bureaucracy.

If we look at historical facts rather than your mothers anecdotes this is incredibly far from the truth.

Chestofdraw··on Scientists engineer mice genomes to lengthen their lifespans by 30 percent
I don't think it's fair to say nothing happened at all.

Aging populations, coupled with low birth rates, are causing difficult political problems. In my country (UK) pensions are the biggest government expenditure next is healthcare, which the elderly use the most. This obviously has to be paid for so you have two options, raise taxes or increase immigration. Our government chose to increase immigration and a lot of people didn't like that so the government blamed the EU, this went on for a while and brexit was the eventual response.

So the chaos is already here, war might be hyperbole but a war caused by something is not unimaginable and ageing populations would be a contributing factor.

I feel there is an increasing level of bitterness directed towards the old. The government panders to them for easy votes which takes public spending from the young and my gut feeling is having policies that cater for the old is not healthy for the long term success of of a society.

Chestofdraw··on Ecuador acknowledges it has "temporarily restricted" Assange's communications
> The reality is that most people want either Trump or Clinton

Is that actually the reality? My impression is that most people do not want either Trump nor Clinton but they want one a lot less than the other so they'll vote against that candidate rather than voting for one.

Chestofdraw··on Facebook Has Repeatedly Trended Fake News Since Firing Its Human Editors
I've seen this idea pushed a ton recently, especially over on /r/ukpolitics and it seems like nonsense.

I think the idea stems from the way the Graun has opened up it's 'Comment is Free' section which has lead to quite a few low quality opinion pieces particularly 'SJW' esq ones.

The actual reporting from the Gruan is still good quality in my opinion, certainly head and shoulders above the DMs. And whilst the Graun has its left bias it, quite rightly, hasn't been kind to the current Labour party.

Assuming this isn't a roundabout way of saying you've replaced your battery a few times then you have been exceptionally careful and have been lucky to get and exceptionally good battery. Your situation is going to be experienced by a statistically insignificant amount of people.

For most users a 5 year old battery is going to be completely useless and it's going to be attached to a screen that has been shattered beyond usability.

Chestofdraw··on Oct. 4
If your goal is to make a good product then introducing points of failure around its power supply probably isn't a great idea.
Chestofdraw··on Oct. 4
I honestly can't see why people care so much about having long update windows. Batteries simply aren't good for many cycles so it doesn't make sense to support a phone for longer than its battery will last.

Also, it's a pretty reasonable assumption that users who don't care to be on the latest hardware don't care to be on the latest software.
