CBarkleyU··on MCP is dead?
>If one wants the 'teaching' part comes from a server then MCP. If one wants it local and static then skills

Not being facetious, but why not:

"If one wants the 'teaching' part comes from a server then OpenAPI specs. If one wants it local and static then man page."

CBarkleyU··on The AI zombification of universities
Not always [1]

Having gone to university in Germany, there are glimpses of this ideal, but they're mostly faint memories enshrined on faded plaques around the campus. I did have an old geezer prof (90+ years old) that went to the very same university over half a century ago and showed us his diploma: greek, latin, humanities, ... for a technical diploma, no less!

I do still cringe a little when we get newjoiners fresh out of university proudly proclaiming "Yeah, no can do, we didn't learn that at university". Yes, obviously, university is not an apprenticeship. You learn how to learn and then apply that to unknown-to-you problems. Oddly enough ChatGPT seems to have brought a change to that mindset, but Im not sure if it did so for the better.

CBarkleyU··on College instructor turns to typewriters to curb AI-written work
Re: oral exams in Germany

Not sure when this was supposed to be the case, but for actual universities (not meant in a deragotary way, Germany has two types of higher eduction) in hard sciences, most classes are graded on a single written exam. Both in undergrad/bachelors and masters.

Unless things have drastically changed in the last five years...

CBarkleyU··on Breaking the spell of vibe coding
With all due respect, but if you actually wasted hours (multiple) each (!) day on those issues, then yeah, I can fully believe that AI assisted coding 10 or even 100x'd you.
CBarkleyU··on Ask HN: How can ChatGPT serve 700M users when I can't run one GPT-4 locally?
Off topic, but I bought my (still in active use) 980ti literally 9 years ago for that price. I know, I know, inflation and stuff, but I really expected more than 50% bang for my buck after 9 whole years…
CBarkleyU··on I will do anything to end homelessness except build more homes (2018)

CBarkleyU··on US appeals court rules AI generated art cannot be copyrighted
Do you happen to have more reading material on said law?

In Germany, you can't even transfer copyright. So yeah, anything you create that reaches the threshold of having a copyright, you own the copyright. Even as an employee.

At the same time, you might not own the usage rights (Nutzungsrechte/Verwertungsrechte).

CBarkleyU··on Germany government collapses at a perilous time for Europe
>and we have enough fighting age immigrants pouring into Europe in the last decades that we can mobilize and throw into the meatgrinder before having to tap our own population.

I could say that this is extremely macabre (which it is), but I guess I have a better chance reaching the HN crowd by saying that soldiers under force usually perform atrocioucsly, especially fighting for a cause they have zero interest in.

CBarkleyU··on The myth that you can’t build interactive web apps except as single page app
That's a nice addendum to the quote, actually. Will use it in future.

CBarkleyU··on Video game libraries lose legal appeal to emulate physical games online
Besides the fact that I have yet to see any "Big IP" fight for anything but strengthening and lengthening IP rights, your premise doesn't compute: Depending on the country copyright is either by itself transferable (and by far and away is done automatically in an employer-employee relationship) or transferable via exclusive licensing rights (for example in Germany).

It's bizarre to think that Disney somehow has to fight their employees for Disney IP right. It would be nice if that was the case, but it isn't.

What has the old Pine-Cone been up to these days?
CBarkleyU··on Is Matt Mullenweg defending WordPress or sabotaging it?
That analogy doesn't fit. What actually happened is that someone shared with you how they do mining contingent on the fact that if you use that knowledge or add to it, that you have to share it as well (WordPress was a fork off of b2/cafelog)

You did so, but turns out that other people are way better at utilizing that knowledge than you are. You throw a hissy fit on the internet. Everybody turns against you, even people who think that in essence you're right.

My mom used to always say: Why bother wiping your ass, if your going to take another shit tomorrow.
CBarkleyU··on Alexei Navalny's Prison Diaries
Don't bother. Humans always need a good and evil, and by nature the enemy of evil has to be good.

I've had this conversation many times, it doesn't lead to anything. If Hamas is bad, then anything that Isreal does in order to eliminate Hamas, has to be good. If Russia is bad, than anything that Ukraine does, has to be good. If Putin is bad, than Nawalny has to be good. If Erdoğan is bad, than İmamoğlu has to be good.

This is obviously just as true vice versa, so it's not like the "other side" is any more reasonable to have a discussion with.

CBarkleyU··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
This is something that I like to ask friends and acquaintances: Would you rather take a pill that gives you perfect nutrition and nullifies your hunger feeling or a pill that the gives you perfect nutrition and nullifies any other calories you eat.

It's pretty much 50/50. Which is weird, as you'd think that eating is only a pleasure when hungry and I'm proposing them a way to get rid of hunger. Even weirder is that I personally would take the second pill and enjoy my gluttonous lifestyle.

Regarding this thread: I personally decided for myself that if I can be stubborn towards my wife, friends and mom (and I am a stubborn SOB) I sure as hell can be stubborn towards my own bodily desires. I removed all meals except once per day and pretty much all desserts. Fuck what my body thinks it desires, if it needs it that much it can go fix a meal while I sleep.

CBarkleyU··on Show HN: I made an SSH tunnel manager to learn Go
Is Rust still that hard to grok even after a year to you? This is by no means meant to be disrespectful but I'm itching to start learning Rust but having only worked in Python/C#/Go I'm getting cold feet just looking at a Rust codebase

Disclaimer: I'm usually very good at hitting the ground running, but I am just as much bad at "keeping the pace", i.e. diving deep into stuff

CBarkleyU··on Things I've learned building a modern TUI Framework (2022)

Is telling the people to RTFA against the guidelines?

The guideline specifically advises to do what GP did: Instead of commenting whether or not someone read the article, to tell them that article answers their questions.

CBarkleyU··on Official proposal for Type Unions in C#
I'm itching to try and deep dive into go as a C# dev. I'm getting sick of enterprise C#, even if it is .NET8

I guess the grass is always greener somewhere

CBarkleyU··on The Unix Pipe Card Game
Not sure about kids, but I've seen university students that literally did not know how to use a non iOS computing device. Colleagues had to start explaining what a file is, a folder, etc etc, in their courses.

Honestly I don't find that too bad. My guess is that computers will go the same way cars did: Most people will only know the very basics that are needed to operate the thing. Any deeper knowledge will be left to enthusiasts and professionals. Thus computers, while getting more complicated internally, will have fewer and fewer modi of usages.

About 80% of my grades in uni were 100% based on the finals. AFAIAA this is the norm for STEM in Germany.

This was less true for my Master's and is generally less true for non STEM.

I kind of liked it tbh

CBarkleyU··on US House passes bill to ban TikTok if owners won't divest
The West was greedy and saw a trillion dollar opportunity in welcoming China into the WTO in 2000 and gave China massive leeway (this is my opinion, and probably not a majority opinion).

In my opinion (only speaking for Germany, as I follow mostly the politics here) nobody was very keen on asking questions and making demand when the Chinese were producing our shit for pennies on the dollar but buying our premium Mercedes Benz S Classes Long Lines (and similar high technology products) by the millions.

Who would've thunk that the turntables would've, well turned...

I'm not blaming China for this btw, they played their hand very well

CBarkleyU··on Microsoft unbundles Office and Teams globally following years-long criticism

CBarkleyU··on Xemu: Original Xbox Emulator
That E3 was crazy. Anyone remember the video that Sony posted on "how to share games with friends" while the Xbox debacle on locked discs and always online was in full force? (it was literally a guy giving a game disc to another guy)

This is why I am still against the MS acquisitions. Imagine that whole debacle happening but you're still forced to buy an anti consumer console, because God forbid you like to play CoD, Fallout, Starfield...
